    This last week is exactly why I mentioned when they fired Fisher that I used to worry when Longhorn fans would point out the cultural issues that cause them to repeat the same mistakes over and over but that I don't worry anymore. They will absolutely never listen to Longhorns and even moreso would never implement changes we suggest. They'd rather lose their way than win ours. So they will. For at least another 84 years. They're doing it again. Reflexively declaring their new coach a genius and their new players amazing when reality says their coach is doing the bare minimum to field a team and their new players are on average replacement level for a team that even thinks about winning big.

    Tony Jones went over the middle and held onto a ball while Steve Atwater lined him up for a kill shot. He held onto it and we won and he was fine. The rules are tougher on defenders trying to make big hits now, too. Worry about his blocking, not his safety.

    Now do how good they are on the actual field. Using recruiting ratings to rebut the premise that a recruiting guy overrates something is an interesting move. Massey ratings because they're easy to parse: SEC has 6 of 14 teams in Top 25, Big 12 has 6 of 14. SEC has 12 of 14 in the Top 50, Big 12 has 10. So this big difference is that Mississippi State was slightly better than BYU. If they flipped it would be 11 each in the top 50. So yeah, the handwringing is a bit overboard.

    The benefit for Texas there is that the unpredictable bounces of a football are much more likely to find open space that Odunze and McMillan might not be moving toward than that a standard onside kick's bounces will escape a mass of Huskies. At least that would be the thought. Either method obviously has a low probability of success.

    Head coaches love to think football is some unknowable mystery only their kinesiology degrees can unlock, but it sure seems like the vast majority of hires that make fans say WTF flame out a lot faster than the ones that excite the fans. I'm just as sad to see Roof leave as I was happy when he was hired.

    My comment is more about Arnold than Weigman. Even in mediocre performances Weigman has shown the ability to make plays that I haven't seen from Arnold, just not consistently.

    I have been critical of him at times for ball tracking and effort earlier in his career but anyone ripping him for Blue's fumble is being dumb. He jumped on it and went for it. In the stadium live at full speed it was hard to tell it was a fumble. The entire stadium either groaned or cheered when they showed the replay on the screens because almost nobody realized it had been a clear fumble. As soon as he saw the ball he dove in.

    Yep, this is the most irritating thing they do when evaluating prospects. I don't give a shit if the guy is a future starting NFL left tackle. There are only 32 of those in the world, or maybe 3-4 every year. Meanwhile there is a starting left tackle on every college football team every year. Almost by definition there will be a first team all conference left tackle in a power conference who never starts at that position in the NFL. But you can sure as shit win a national championship with him.
