  1. That’s me. Whenever a recipe gives a prep time, I usually add about 10 more minutes for South Austin time.
  2. Yep. Have sweated out a gallon of beer at ACL Fest the first weekend of October plenty of times.
  3. That’s how you do the most important meal of the day.
  4. Man, this seems to be the case by all accounts. It’s a shame because I’ve been a member for about 30 years, and in one roof claim and a couple auto claims over that period they’ve been great. Related question, the dad of my best friend’s daughter told me his insurer allowed him to “suspend” coverage for his daughter while she’s in college, and his premium dropped to about $50 a month to keep her on. Will look into doing the same for my daughter. Anyone else here able to do something like that?
  5. My daughter starts at University of Oregon in the Fall. My son, who's in 8th grade and still has a ways to go, is open to going out of state, and I'm going to push North Carolina State. He's a smart kid, works hard, and gets straight A's so far, but it's really tough to get the numbers for UNC or Duke, and at least by the published rankings (for whatever those are worth), N.C. State has moved up pretty significantly since I went there in 1992-1994 for my first two years of college. That could provide an anchor for us to possibly move to North Carolina, and it's probably more likely than the Pacific Northwest, and it's not a given that my daughter will even settle there after she graduates, though I'm pretty sure she's not coming back to Texas or anywhere close. Again, probably a long shot, but why not put some wheels in motion? Also, it's funny, but until my dad got a job in Texas after he retired from the Marines, I thought he and mom would settle in North Carolina, and I'd stay somewhere in the state, probably the Raleigh/Durham area. But then, I followed them to Texas, transferred to UT, loved Austin and, until a few years ago, the state of Texas, and believed I'd die here. Now, 30 years after moving here, if I didn't have so many ties keeping me in Austin, I think I'd move back to North Carolina in a heartbeat.
  6. No shit. Let Roy Kent have a go at a GOP interview or two.
  7. My mid-80s high, lower humidity August weekend says wtf. You'll likely never get a weekend like that in Houston until October. And I missed the part where the Western North Carolina mountains frequently get hit with hurricanes.
  8. Sorry if it’s been analyzed elsewhere in this forum, but is it better or worse for Harris if RFKJr is not on the ballot? Seems to me it would be worse, because he’s crazy as fuck, and his voters would end up voting for the other crazy as fuck candidate instead of Harris. Maybe I’m being too simplistic.
  9. It’s a shame that one of the funniest guys in my childhood was by all accounts an awful human being to work with.
  10. My wife and I visited Charleston and Asheville for the first time this summer. We loved both. But Charleston's weather was not the best. Sure, they don't get cold winters, but we were there in early June and already the humidity was shitty. Plus, hurricanes. And as you note, South Carolina is firmly red/MAGA (not getting all Cloak Room-ish, but just stating an objective fact if politics are important to your possible retirement destination). Asheville moved up the retirement fantasy list. Its population is only about 95,000, which isn't too small for us, and it felt a little like what Austin was 35 years ago, though with some signs of gentrification here and there. It's a huge foodie and brewery scene, I don't think the winters would be too bad, and it's not so fucking hot for so fucking long like Texas. And Asheville is firmly blue, with NC as a state looking more purple. I don't know how the health care system is up there, which is a big factor. And, it's not the most convenient places for air travel -- yes, there's an airport close by, but the flight schedule didn't seem super, and for the most part it's smaller aircraft connecting to Charlotte or another nearby hub. Other than that, it checks a lot of boxes. But as I've said on this and other threads, there's a good chance we're stuck in Austin for another 15 or more years (I turn 50 later this year), and maybe for the rest of our lives. I can still dream, though.
  11. He wasn't in drag, it was his Halloween costume as a childless cat lady.
