  1. What else are you going to do during the commercials?
  2. This is a lot like my 14-year-old freshman. Great grades, is thriving in his band community, and by all accounts when he's in school it sounds like he interacts with a lot of friend groups. But after school and on weekends it seems he spends 80% of his waking life in front of a screen. He's got his headset on so he can game with his friends, which is his way of being "social," I guess. I know a lot of other teenage boys are like that as well. But when I bring up the possibility of actually hanging out with a friend on a weekend, even offering to provide transportation, he's like "eh." I hope this changes when he and his friends start driving. Of course, this was never an issue with my daughter when she was in high school and now my step-daughter. They're constantly at friend's houses, going to the Domain, etc.
  3. Where's Damien when you need him?
  4. "You are a bad guy!" is something a fifth-grader would write.
  5. Still meh. She's just not a good vocalist. I mean, it was fine for the No Doubt sound. Lots of 90s bands in the post-grunge era had average to bad vocalists.
  6. There is indeed a fascination with human depravity, and like everything else, filmmakers, studios, and streaming companies cash in on it. I went through a period in college when I consumed true crime books, and every now and then I watch a true crime documentary if I can tell that it's well produced. My wife, though, watches that stuff like it's oxygen. I heard a report on NPR a few years ago that women in particular are drawn to true crime stories, in particular those that involve crimes against women, because they have a strong empathetic connection to them, especially if they have been the victim of some kind of sexual assault or sexual abuse.
  7. My daughter attended an AISD high school, so no, nothing like that.
  8. There's probably an actual picture out there somewhere that doesn't need photoshopping.
  9. Man, it’s rare that I agree with the first post out of the gate in threads like these, but I can’t think of any other films that clearly top these for me.
  10. Funny, but this past weekend I dialed up No Doubt’s Return of Saturn, as I remember listening to it a lot around 2000 or so, but hadn’t played it in a couple decades. My God, her vocals are fucking awful. I think the polishing has helped.
  11. Shorts are the silent killer the medical establishment does not want you to know about.
  12. What's in the picture on the right side of that image?
  13. Lock him up! #nocloakroom
  14. I don't know if there's a more intellectually dishonest and spinless member of our U.S. Senate than Ted Cruz. Which means there's a decent chance he's our next President.
  15. She has bigger balls than Lindsey Graham, so . . . .
  16. Yeah. It's not like forensics and other investigative means were of stone-age quality in 1991. They were eventually able to find the killer of Michael Morton's wife, and that happened in 1987. This case was so horrific that I lived halfway across the country at the time and we heard about this on the news in North Carolina.
  17. Lots of clouds trolling over downtown Austin.
  18. I got my daughter assistance through College Inroads. She was a hard-working self-starter in high school, and she pretty much knew what kind of college she wanted to attend and where. But the application and essay process these days can be fairly daunting, and given my daughter's course load and extra-curricular commitments, she felt overwhelmed at the process. So the college coaching helped provide the structure and support, and the experience to help her craft essays that might better grab the attention of admissions staff. Overall it was worth the investment, and I'll probably do the same for my son.
  19. Arch was only “solid”? We’re so fucked.
  20. A song was playing at the gym earlier this week, and I thought to myself, “That’s a damn catchy tune,” so I Shazam’ed it. It was Gwen Stefani. I’m not proud of this.
  21. As an aside, there’s no way this movie gets made today. Asian stereotypes, non-consensual drugged sex, to name a couple reasons.
