Not complaining, just noting how arbitrary the D1/D2 lines can be in 6A. I don't think a lot of people had AHS beating Bowie. If you look back at what I wrote, you might see that I'm not sure that Westlake would have done any better this year in D2 (and not sure that they would have beaten Vandy in the QF). I think they've hit their ceiling either way - out in the semis. For this team, that's a pretty good accomplishment.
-
Westlake is only in the D1 bracket because Bowie somehow managed to lose late in the season against Austin High. Would Westlake have been favored in D2 vs Summer Creek? Would they have gotten past Vandegrift in quarters? Probably better chances than against the remaining D1 schools, but this is is one if the least potent WL offenses in recent memory.

Conner Vasek got injured fairly early in the season and has not seen that much of the field. He's one of the guys headed to Air Force. Wise throws a nice ball from a clean pocket to an open receiver. He rarely looks to the second option and he doesn't have much wiggle or speed as a runner, but he's a decent power runner for a QB. I've been discouraged by his lack of decision making development through the season. I expect he'll get some recruiting attention to a second- or third-tier school just based on arm and size. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him end up as a TE at the next level. Fwiw, I don't see any interesting walkons coming out of this WL team.

Lol. fwiw, the only traditional blue blood school that any of the seniors in that game signed with was USC (Cordova, LT). LT QB Ditta actually signed with East Carolina, with the other 2 LT signees to Army and SFA. Westlake had 2 go to Air Force, 1 to Baylor (Wilhelm (as a TE apparently)), and Duke (Shaper). Nobody more than a 3-star at either school.

Front 7 is solid. Offense is not. If it doesn't end with NS/Atascosita, I'll be very, very surprised.
-
(Westlake Jr QB) Wise has not progressed at all - he's just a big kid with a strong arm who never checks off of the first option. I thought that Wilhelm was going to be able to use his size to become a go-to receiver, but he's regressed throughout the season. The only offensive player who has really stepped up is WR/RB Livingood. We'll see if they can generate enough offense to get past Brennan.

Yeah, Britt Hager was great, no doubt. Breckyn? Not so much. Didn't have the body for an end, and didn't have the tools to be a LB. Burke and Vasek both have the right tools to continue to excel. That Breckyn got so much playing time at UT says enough about that era.

Another longtime Westlake follower here. Burke and Vasek were obviously monsters at Westlake - tenacious, smart, and long. I was pretty excited to see them both flip to Texas. Conversely, I couldn't tell what the hell the Longhorns were going to do with Breckyn Hager - he was absolutely a one trick pony in high school. All he ever did was blindly try to run around the tackle to get to the quarterback. Never a fan there. Really happy to see Burke coming through at the next level - he always played hard and clean and was a lot of fun to watch.

Texas Recruiting Notes 2023: Strippers, Monkeys, and 5-Stars

I've probably seen 50 games Greathouse has played in and I don't see him as a typical slot due to lack of elite quickness off the line, but he could certainly play the role the way that Whittington has been playing this year. Strong hands, good size, great body control and strength to break tackles. He's also a willing blocker, though he has had is share of holding penalties (not so much this season). He's got good enough open field vision to have returned multiple punts for TDs this season (4, maybe) despite the lack of elite speed. I have trouble seeing him bulking up to play TE, which is how he had been projected at times. -

Westlake season ticket holder here. Greathouse has taken advantage of size mismatches for most of his time at Westlake. He's definitely not a burner, though he has very good hands which is why I can see him as a reliable possession receiver, and I think that he could excel at finding soft spots in zones. I have a little trouble seeing him in the slot because he also does not seem to burst off the line with quickness. He gets more than his fair share of holding penalties and I've never seen him do anything which reads like tight end material, though he definitely gives blocking effort. I'm not sure at all that he's going to excel at the next level due to the lack of high-end speed or exceptional quickness. He does seem like a good kid (never seen him do anything stupid on the field in 4 years, something I definitely cannot say about Shanahan), so I hope things work out for him wherever he goes. -
Westlake season-ticket holder here. Burke is long, quick, agile, and plays smart He swats a lot of passes away and once he gets his hands on a runner, it's usually over. He's clearly a project due to his leanness, but I thought that Michigan was making a good gamble when they offered. My concern at UT is position, as I see him more as a 4-3 DE. For Westlake DE comparison, I thought at the time that Breckyn Hager was a bad take, since he had exactly one move in HS (speed move outside the tackle). Burke is much more athletic, versatile, and disruptive.
