  1. Texas qualifies both men's and women's team for nationals, taking second at the (extremely weak) South Central Regionals. I've been following UT athletics for close to 15 years now and it always seems as if Arkansas and Texas are the two qualifers to nationals.
  2. Both Turati's win! Bianca will improve her career high ranking (top 450). Fernanda wins in Chile too, taking advantage of her WC by beating another WC. This is her third tournament victory with points, meaning she should get a WTA ranking in the next few weeks.
  3. Ehhh... I wouldn't put too much emphasis on rankings right now. Not all teams have competed full roster or are at full taper. Stanford is still the de facto number 1. But in good news the number 4 recruit Olivia Bray just verballed (class of 2020).
  4. Ouch. At least he'll have not much to defend next year. He has too much talent to drop even lower. Even Tomic is going to finish in the top 100 this year after a major slump/meltdown. Sock was really close to coming to UT if he hadn't turned pro. With all the success he has had, looks like he made the right choice.
  5. Yeah Claire won Wimbledon, beating Ann Li (who has also decided to turn pro instead of going to college). Not to downplay that, but Bianca did beat Galfi who won the US Open Juniors three years ago. Bianca lost first set before rain came. Play is to finish tomorrow.
  6. Bianca just beat the former world junior number 1 today. She'll also have a new career high when this tournament's points are added! Pretty good considering she is not playing a full pro schedule. I know on the other page I had doubts about Bianca going pro, but I wouldn't be surprised now if she decides to go pro after this spring season (based on other players who forewent their final year)
  7. Christian and Harrison wins the doubles championship on a double fault 11-9 in the third and after saving a match point! (One of the Tech players sure was mad after the match throwing his racquet, balls, hat, shoes, and towel. I think he ran out of things to throw.)
  8. Yuya is now in the final. Along with the women, it's an All UT final! Should be mention though that TCU didn't bring their top players to this tournament.
  9. Really good weekend for the Horns at ITA Regionals. Anna vs. Bojana in the final. A bit worried about Marta- saw that she's in crutches Interesting win: Fernanda beating Jayci Goldsmith. I alluded to this a couple years ago on the other board, but I know that Jayci took a recruiting visit to Texas (before Labrana had committed). Don't know if Joffe passed on Jayci though.
  10. So the lower lineup played at Baylor this weekend. Pleased to see Labrana and Poluta win the doubles title. Labrana also got second and beat Hinojosa in the quarters (this is great because Hinojosa played line 2/3 last year at Baylor). Also as a sidenote: the player that beat Marta and Labrana is Maria Genovese. Genovese was a tennis prodigy and I think signed a six figure contract with Under Armour at the age of 13. Pretty big deal winning the Orange Bowl for her age group and had a top 100 junior ranking as only a 15 year old. Then injury and politics got in the way. Glad she's still playing tennis albeit at the JUCO level. Probably will have to go to an NAIA school after this year.
  11. At minimum, Shook needs to finish in the top 2 for setting if she's going to be the starting setter all four years. No other Texas setter (other than Moriarty) was the starter for four years!
  12. Bianca wins the ITF 15k at Hilton Head. Beat current college player Mikulskyte (Kentucky, ranked 91) and Bayerlova (Washington State, ranked 17). Unfortunately, these wins don't count for ITA ranks. Looks like Bianca is playing the pro circuit for the next several weeks, skipping most of the fall college tournaments and will most likely start the spring without a rank. Really encouraging results from the pre qualifying. Tijana won 3 and is now in qualifying draw. Marta took the number one recruit of 2018 to three sets. In addition, Bojana is faster this year (still needs to work on her defensive shots though).
  13. Stats just said Grosso came into the game. Guess the Canadians made the short drive from Frisco to Ft. Worth
  14. Prequalifying is going on in Malibu for the ITA All Americans Got to watch the freshmen Tijana play both singles and doubles. Wow- Joffe has recruited another stud. Has a nice serve (including a nasty kicker for a second serve) and along with her Balkan counterparts, hits a lot of aggressive groundstrokes. A bit more topspin compared to Granic and Markovic. Really good mover. Struggles a bit with low balls as expected for tall players.
  15. Lol Djokovic just pegged Federer. Novak seems uncomfortable on the doubles court.
  16. https://www.canadasoccer.com/canada-soccer-set-to-open-pre-tournament-camp-in-texas-ahead-of-2018-concacaf-women-s-championship-p161809 Does this mean they're gone for the whole period Sep 20 to Oct 1st!? If they do get selected for World Cup qualifying, they'll be gone for essentially another two weeks until Oct 17th.
  17. Berg drew some attention to herself too during that last play, opening up a bit of space for Billups to run through the box. Feel really bad for the defender mishitting the clearance (we've all had those moments). What kind of activities does Canada have this weekend? Don't see any matches on their schedule.
  18. Somehow missed this... http://www.iowastatedaily.com/sports/title-ix-complaint-filed-against-iowa-state-university-by-women/article_87978128-597b-11e8-b9f4-37468ef5d0d2.html Regardless of this incident, head coach was likely going to be gone after season ended after being perennial bottom dwellers and poor recruiting. Assistant coach usually get lets go too when HC is gone. AC has left a trail of destruction behind her wherever she goes (disaster at Bowling Green when she was the HC).
  19. Marathon Match but Bianca has done it. On to the second round facing Elie (who beat Anna in the qualifiers) along with 5 WTA ranking points.
  20. Bianca got into main draw as lucky loser. Playing Tara Moore (former top 150) and Bianca just won the first set.
  21. That's the problem. Elliot does recruit liberos...McCoy, Brooks, Yogi, Palmer, Olschwanger, Rounsaville, Hahn, etc. were all recruited specifically for the libero position competition. While a lot were walk ons, they were all highly touted. Go to the archives of volleytalk and every year it's the same- posters getting all excited and singing the praises of the next defensive recruit (before coming onto campus and not panning out). Even Olschwanger was honored as a 'Defensive Dandy' by PrepVolleyball magazine. McCoy was one of the top 2 liberos of her class. Petersen has been recruited since 2015, back when she was just a sophomore in high school. I know the current Stanford libero Hentz was also recruited by Texas. Thus the problem is development, which brings the spotlight on Sullivan- the defensive coach. Actually, the libero position is pretty unstable on the national team. I think the US is going to go with a converted OH into L at this World Championships in Japan this year.
  22. The weird thing is that one of the critical passers of the 2012 championship team Sha'dare McNeal didn't even play back row until her senior year of high school! Somehow Elliot, Rockwell, and Sullivan were able to develop her passing and defense skills during her four years
  23. What BS is this? Those infractions ARE NOT minor And it's not the word 'thief' that sparked the third violation. It was the constant tirade during the whole changeover that included the threat of never being allowed to officiate her match again. Williams has threatened to shove a ball down official's throats, told umpires that they're ugly, and has made the statement along the lines of 'you better not see me in the hallway' She is not classy at all compared to the likes of Li Na, Kvitova, Halep, etc.
  24. I'm just laughing at the whole banning catsuit is racist thing? Stupid people can never bother to do research. Anne White had her similar outfit banned back in 1985 Wimbledon. Also Williams really doesn't need the outfit to prevent blood clots, she's running around, sprinting side to side. That is more than enough in preventing clots.
