  1. Texas beats TCU. Questionable stacking going on- I don't believe Martins should be playing line 5 for TCU. Rivkin was leading 6-4 5-2. Proceeds to lose the next five games and then bagels her opponent in the third set.
  2. 6-1 win! Oklahoma State only one unbeaten in conference...although they still have to play against OU and Iowa State
  3. In other news, Bianca got her first win as a coach at Mizzou over the weekend! Not to make her job tougher but Mizzou also currently don't have indoor courts to practice and host matches as there's 'structural issues' at the facility. So far all home matches have been held in either St. Louis or Springfield, both 2 hours drive away from Columbia 😵 Guessing Ovrootsky is going to redshirt? Her wrist injury must be pretty bad for her not to play all season Also saw that Charlotte Kempenaers-Pocz of Australia is going to play for Texas next year. In my opinion, hard to say what her full capabilities are as I'm pretty sure her ITF juniors career was severely hampered by Australia's strict COVID entry and exit policies. But I'm also guessing that Tennis Australia must have thought highly as her as she got a WC to play the Australian open qualies (with a ranking in the 1000s) and has gotten three wildcards to play in the doubles Grand Slam main draw (even winning one round). Tennis Australia must have also pulled some strings to get Simona Halep to agree to be her doubles partner!
  4. https://mutigers.com/news/2023/2/23/mizzou-announces-tennis-coaching-change.aspx Major yikes- can't imagine what Bianca just walked into. No coaching experience and within 2 months of being an assistant HC, now you're the head coach of an SEC school. Also interesting that Zlobinsky (played first at UT, then transferred to Wake Forest, played in the NC match against UT in 2019) is now the volunteer assistant of the UT women's team.
  5. Beat UW 4-0. Face Big 12 foe Iowa State tomorrow. Though it wasn't pretty, I'm impressed with Khirin. Even when down or facing break points, she was still freely swinging away.
  6. 4-0 against Baylor. May be a continuing theme this year- the bottom of the lineup won convincingly. Also want to point Rapolu double bageling Baranano at line 4. They played twice during the 2021 season and both matches went to three sets with Rapolu winning both times.
  7. Siem looks physically much stronger this year Spizzirri also has his backhand back for this season Hopefully good indicators for the year. No more injuries please!
  8. https://tennisrecruiting.net/article.asp?id=410979263 "Bailly, a 17-year-old from Belgium, who, like Geller, made two junior slam finals to finish No. 1, hasn't ruled out joining his brother Pierre-Yves, who was the 2022 Big 12 Freshman of the Year at Texas. " This article makes it sound like Gilles Bailly is either coming to Texas or going pro. (For those who don't know, the author has been a reporter in junior tennis world for decades.)
  9. Not to mention SMU was probably the first team out of the NCAA's last year. Texas should still win, but wouldn't be surprised if the score is 5-2.
  10. Schnaider is in such an unique position. Closest I can think of is Beatrice Capra back in 2010 making the third round of the US Open and then getting double baggled by Sharapova. Question was whether or not she'd go pro or go to Duke (since she was HS class of 2011). Capra played about dozen more tournaments afterwards and it was pretty clear that her US Open run was a fluke (lost at least 5 matches in a row on ITF circuit) and enrolled at Duke. Schnaider is even better at this point compared to Capra as Schnaider will be top 100 and can enter many more of the main WTA tournaments. Capra's ranking only got as high as 201. Miami Invite: Pretty clear that Texas' main strength will be at the bottom of the lineup. Good to see Pachkaleva back on the court after her injury last year at the NCAA's.
  11. From what's been said, Schnaider's decision to go to college was based a lot on the Russian War and her family thought there'd be a lot of travel restrictions placed on Russian citizens. When she committed to NC State over the summer, her ranking was in the 300s. Then over the fall she went on a tear and rose over 200 places. Seriously am wondering if she's going to follow through playing the NCAAs or if she sees the benefit of play pro full time now. btw, NC State could have probably been even stronger had Nugroho (last year's ACC freshmen of the year) had not turned pro. Also Chantra of OU turned pro over the summer.
  12. With the rotation that Texas was in Skinner was on the right side and Phillips was on the left. Not the ideal scenario as Phillips is not a natural left side hitter (middle blocker all throughout high school) and has a limited range of shots. So if the pass is off and SKT has no other option but to moonball it to the left, it's essentially a free ball. Parra is a natural OH, played internationally, and can beat the block as her arm swing is much faster than Phillip's. There are other ways to get out of this rotation but it involves 'stacking' the hitters to one side and one of the wing hitters is basically running/sprinting the full width of the court to get in position to hit.
  13. If I'm not mistaken, NCAA Men's Volleyball uses international volleyball rules where there can only be one substitution per player. That means both OH's and the Opposite have to play all the way around for the majority of the match. That's why you see more hand 'sets' when receiving serve and you see so many more 'D' shots (opposite hitting off the back row). Also why there's not as much rallies in the men's game since there's not a lot of DS. Because men teams can bail themselves out with moonball sets, it incentivizes the server to just let it rip.
  14. Looks like my hunch is correct. Maya Joint (got one of the qualifying WCs) has committed to UT. Has wins over current players at Ohio State and Baylor. Has also beaten recruits at Stanford and A&M. Pretty good ITF junior record- ranked 163 and only 16.
  15. Lol I was there over the weekend- in fact from the outside you couldn't tell there was a tournament going on. There were more people dressed up for a pink jeep convention that was also happening within the vicinity (!)
  16. The walk on just beat an All Conference player. 😱
  17. Nice that they got to do it for all of the 2022 team. I don't think there's a pic with all of the 2021 championship team. Fortunately there's $25K going on in Austin that Stearns, the Zamarripa twins, and Kylie Collins are in town for. Fogelman is in the photo too. Speaking of the $25K, I wonder if any of the wild cards (in both qualifying and main draws) not used on current Texas player signify a potential recruit? Also, Austin was selected to host a WTA 250 event next year on the last week of February. Will expect several of the players to get wild cards into that draw.
  18. https://www.usopen.org/en_US/video/2022-09-05/16624192374914658.html?cid=2022oneboxUSA_00000000_phto_chothr_ctwbtr_endcid Literally the highlights only show Glasspool winning one point (match point); everything else was focused on Kyrgios 🙄
  19. He was paired with Jaeda Daniel who played at NC State. Also won the NCAA doubles but partner was British and ex TTU player Nell Miller.
  20. Gosh I just can't see that ever happening. There were less than a dozen boys prep clubs in the state 15 years ago. Don't know what it's like right now. Would take a huge grassroot movement to make it a UIL sport. There are some private schools in Texas that sponsor the sport in the Southwest Preparatory Conference.
  21. https://texassports.com/news/2008/4/20/042008aaa_133.aspx Texas has a bit of history back when beach was an informal invitational tournament. Excited to see the school go after an NCAA title!
  22. I'm hoping Yves Bially's brother is interested, although I think he may go the pro route
  23. Stephens loses four straight games and crashes out
  24. Stearns- Joffe has known since before the semester Based on this article, it seems like the Zamarripa twins decided to go pro about a month ago. https://napavalleyregister.com/sports/womens-tennis-st-helenas-zamarripa-twins-help-texas-win-ncaa-title-go-pro/article_937a6c9a-e43b-11ec-adc5-4b4b32a07bee.html
  25. Yep- Could be the line one player for next year. I'm wondering how many years of eligibility she has. I know it gets funky with the Isrealis as they do mandatory military service. Other one is Nicole Rivkin of Germany (significant wins include Sahdiieva and Malm at Baylor, Barnett ex All Big 10 member at Northwestern, and Costoulos current top 5 Junior player)
