  1. On a related note, with the traffic they get on Sundays, Costco would be making well above incremental sales. I imagine the same would hold true for the others like Target, Sam’s, and Walmat. And liquor is heavily taxed with that additional revenue going to the state. There’s no legitimate reason for prohibiting stores from selling liquor on Sundays. If they want to stay closed, so be it.
  2. Sorry but I don’t believe this. And even assuming for the sake of argument it is true, those stores are free to stay closed on Sundays to their hearts’ content, while other stores are open for business. But to have a statewide law prohibiting all stores from selling alcohol on Sundays, whether they want to or not, is just silly and archaic and anticompetitive and discriminatory in the sense that most other states do not have such arbitrary restrictions. Why shouldn’t someone in a supposedly free market be able to sell their goods when they want to?
  3. Probably belongs in the unpopular opinions thread that doesn’t exist here but I always thought Hubcap was overrated, especially the Shady Grove location which was just abysmal. And to top it off the downtown location always had a no credit card policy and the owner was a complete dick about it, as if being cash only in the 4th largest city in the country was just like every other restaurant. But he had his own ATM with above average fees.
  4. Only need 18 more threes to beat the all time record we set last year.
  5. No mention of the Amigo sighting?
  6. Tejas is really hit or miss these days and hasn't been very good the last couple of times I've been.
  7. Yes, and family is broadly defined. So the cousins and in laws of the dancing monkey in the Spec's commercials all have 5 stores.
  8. Hopefully, this is the first step towards getting rid of the Sunday prohibition. The Texas Package Stores Association has always argued that even if stores could open on Sundays, they would prefer to stay closed because paying employees for an extra work day is more than what the sales would be. Costco, Walmart, Target, etc. aren't going to be this lazy.
  9. More than 30 states already allow the Costcos and Walmarts of the world to sell liquor. They still have plenty of liquor stores.

  11. I won HQ the other day, but so did enough other assholes that it wasn't all that much money.
  12. So Pappas finally makes good barbecue...in Clear Lake.
  13. This is a good list. I assume you mean kaffir lime leaves. I would add lemongrass (can be kept in freezer), gochugang, Thai shrimp paste, tapioca flour, Kewpie mayo.
  14. Red Boat is the best fish sauce I've come across. It's made in Vietnam but it is Thai in style -- not sweet at all. To me Vietnamese fish sauce is way to sweet and not nearly salty enough.
  15. Chengdu Taste in Chinatown, which is an import from LA. The WaPO food critic Tom Siestema called the LA location one of the best restaurants in the country. The Houston location was very good the one time I went.
  16. I live in Spring Branch and the commute downtown isn't bad, especially if you pay for the toll/HOV lanes. And I can't believe this hasn't devolved into our first Houston vs. Dallas pissing match. Yet.
  17. Is the game on TV tonight? I'm not seeing it listed on DTV
  18. The Indictment posted above says he was convicted of felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in 2008.
  19. Hoping for several more Zhou Qi sightings in the next two weeks.
