  1. That sculpture thing looks like some kind of alien megavirus under an electron microscope. It's gonna turn us all into Borgs.
  2. Dumb question but I'll ask anyway: For tires, does Pirelli and/or F1 management deliberately design in a certain level or rate of tire degradation, to force the cars to pit somewhat often? I.e. Is Pirelli capable of making a tire that could last a whole race, but the tires are designed to wear out after a certain time, for competition reasons? Sometimes pit stops are the only interesting thing going on in a race, but on the other hand I hate to think that the tires are intentionally engineered to wear out faster than necessary.
  3. Every special teams coach from junior high school to the NFL is going to run that game film as a lesson in what not to do with a blocked punt. It will go on the shelf right next to the '93 Leon Lett play.
  4. I guess this is a little payback from the conference head office for not finding any of the bottle-throwers.
  5. I haven't really paid attention to Syria in a few years--is there really a "good guys" faction to root for in this fight, or it is all just various degrees of "not as bad as Assad or ISIS."
  6. I guess it goes without saying that putting a billionaire like Musk, who owns or controls several major enterprises regulated by the federal government, in charge of government downsizing is a conflict of interest. Like, it's such a huge conflict of interest it's practically the definition of a conflict of interest. I'm going to say it anyway, even though I know expecting anything from this administration to be ethical or fair or even bound by the rule of law is futile.
  7. Just on pure speculation I'm figuring she got to LAX, had some kind of anxiety attack or breakdown at the prospect of going back to NYC, and decided to hang out in LA for an extra day or two, and met some bad people.
  8. I wasn't sure where to post this but this seemed as good a place as any. Yesterday afternoon I needed to travel to/from North Austin (near Parmer) to Round Rock (620 west of 35) for a medical thing. It took me 45 minutes to make the trip, and an hour to get back. The actual distance covered was only 10 miles each way. This was at 2-3 in the afternoon, so not even rush hour. As I-35 is getting torn up I'm also noticing adverse effects on surface roads like N. Lamar and Dessau as people desperately look for other ways to go north or south. Daily traffic on E. Parmer and East 290 is a nightmare as people commute to/from Manor and Elgin, which are exploding with homes and apartments. Not to mention how Howard and Parmer are being densified by packing in big apartment complexes. All of these people are going to be driving on Parmer, 290, I-35 etc. This is all adding up to making driving intolerable, even now. I don't know of any real plans to bring large scale public transit to outer burbs and bedroom communities like Pflugerville, Manor, etc. If it's already like this now, what's it going to be like 5 years from now? It's going to be full on bumper to bumper stop n go hell on every surface road from 6 AM to 10 PM. I don't have any solutions** but I just had to vent. ** Massive congestion fees on traffic entering the Austin area, especially for non-residents ** Ration driving--based on license plate number, cars assigned to specific driving days (MWF, Tues Th Sat, with Sunday being an open day) ** Hope for another pandemic? ** Deport everyone who moved into the Austin are after 2000?
  9. Dammit Youtube TV fucked up my recording of this. They didn't keep up with the time changes.
  10. Does the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution not take care of this? Or have conservatives forgotten that it exists?
  11. That ad needs to be running EVERYWHERE
  12. God dammit, since the Cowboys look hopeless for the foreseeable future I was hoping I could pivot to the Texans as my consolation team, but now they look shitty too. Lost to the fucking Jets. This happens every time I try to get interested in the Texans.
  13. Jesus it's insane that this election is even close. It was sickeningly astonishing the first time Trump won, but for Americans to put him in office again after everything he's done is just a big middle finger to the concept of responsible, democratic government. Voting for Trump is not an act of ignorance anymore, it's an act of malice.
  14. Voted in Travis County today, at the Gus Garcia Rec Center on E. Rundberg. This was just before 5 pm, waited in line about half an hour.
  15. Is that a statewide thing? I didn't look all that closely, but I didn't notice any initials on my early voting ballot today...
  16. It may not be the "worst" loss, but it still feels like a kick in the balls because this was such a prominent game, at home, with national attention focused on it. We had an opportunity to demonstrate to the whole country that Texas was indisputably the best team in college football. Instead we shit all over ourselves and rolled around in it. So not the worst loss, but in it's own way, it was a deeply disappointing loss. And in the first half, I was definitely getting "Miami Cotton Bowl" flashbacks. At least the 2nd half wasn't so bad.
  17. I don't know if it's just my internet tubes or whatever, but I haven't been able to connect to any Travis County election-related websites today, (Early voting location maps, wait times, etc..) None of it will load on Edge or Chrome. Too much traffic crash the site/server?
  18. I'm really glad for the fans that the weather is going to be moderate. But part of me was hoping for a record hot day because I'm tired of hearing F1 TV commenters describe the weather as "a blistering 29 degrees" [84 F] at other tracks, and I want them to feel some real heat.
  19. The fuck is that shit. Those trophies look like Mickey Mouse became Robocop.
  20. It's incredible what phone cameras can image now. With the naked eye I could barely see a smudge, and that only with slightly averted vision. Looked decent in binocs though. I wish the Austin metro area and surrounding suburbs had some rigorous light pollution restrictions but people would never go for that. But not every gas station, car dealership, and store parking lot needs to be lit up like it's high noon on Mercury.
  21. Going to try and catch it tomorrow night. Everything I read suggests that it will be dimming steadily as it moves higher in the sky, so I'm not sure if viewing is going to get any better than it is now.
  22. It will still be an aquarium, just with a completely different population of fish.
