Yeah... it can be an absolute blessing or curse depending on the weather conditions. The good news on Serre is that it is famous for tree skiing, too and if the weather sucks, there's plenty below treeline:

but I have stayed in places like Obergurgl where the base of the mountain was 1930 meters so tree skiing was pretty much non-existent.
I will say that if you want to try skiing in Europe, I really like Serre. Can recommend other places but the one exposure I had to it blew me away. On a side note...
