  1. Looks like they're trying to go up against the beginning of SXSW. Went to Waterloo for an in-store performance by Billy King and the Bad Bad Bad. Strongly recommend. These guys rocked out.
  2. But not full mayhem in the middle. It is a controlled closure in that the police maintained the middle. Who said the 00s?
  3. BTW, here's how APD "closed off" Halloween in 1988. It was not a full closure...
  4. Ultimately some variation of 1980s/early 1990s 6th has to be better than trying to manage this cluster all the time... in defense of the police, that's not easy to keep policed properly. By the way, this is hilarious... ("Austin is too libr'l now... we used to not be like this" - no CR!?"
  5. Y'all just grabbing rando model runs?
  6. Honestly, this reminds me of a conversation with an instructor in France back in 2018. We spent three days together with him mostly guiding me around Les Grands Montets and doing some teaching here and there. Anyway, on our first day, we went off piste to a back bowl and as he watched me ski, he said, you need to get off of those skis. The next morning before we took the first lift up, he took me to our ski shop, got me off of what they had given me and onto Black Crows Orbs (which I later purchased on my own and ski today - you can see them in my video above). What does this mean? Go with the half-day or full-day lesson I recommended and as you work with the instructor during the day and they see you ski and your goals, then ask what type of gear you should be using. Like @PRONG HORN after a run or two of "adjustment" my skiing completely evolved and we were skiing up on the glacier the next day. Gave me a lot of confidence and was the starting point of me becoming more aggressive as a skier even in my decrepit age.
  7. Muleshoe eh? I can smell that picture from here. Actually here's the ironic thing... this is a winter barn in the alps. Right in the middle of town. It smells like Muleshoe.
  8. If you do go to Val Gardena, this is a great place to eat outdoors on a beautiful day... https://www.baitaciampac.com/ another great location in Alta Badia which is just over a mountain pass from Selva https://www.jimmihuette.it/en/
  9. Yeah its gorgeous...
  10. It all depends what you want to do in the mountains but yeah more to do in and around Bologna. When you go to the Dolomiti, go take the two table cars from Ortisei up to Seceda. Beautiful!
  11. I think you just have to do a better job of idiot control. That is key. Will APD do that. At least the crowd will not be as spread out and maybe less harder to police.
  12. Arch going to bring us Unknown Pleasures
  13. Hear me out. Late 80s / early 90s I remember traffic on the Dirty 6th. Yes, it was a party street but never felt truly out of control. I feel like 6th street truly got dirty once they made it pedestrian only and it made it easy for people to congregate... specifically randos who come down to hang out in the middle with no intention of spending any money in the clubs/bars. So, if you make it harder for people to just show up to party in the middle, you theoretically eliminate some of the issues. As someone else said, east 6th east of 35 and west 6th don't have the same issues and the streets are not closed. It's not as dumb as you might think.
  14. Playing around with GoPro. Let's see if this loads. We spent a lot of time farting around with jumps... Taos.mp4
  15. Quoting myself but this is what you want... again, you may end up in a small group of 1-2 people. I don't know. I'm not familiar with the crowds or vibe at Whitefish but that's what my gut tells me based on experience. My solo experience at CB was during a spring break soooo... you never know.
  16. I was just coming to post these guys, too... https://www.youtube.com/@StompItTutorials Now, I don't know about Whitefish and their ski school but I'm a big proponent of taking occasional lessons to work on technique. You can get paired with a group that is blue/black. Odds are that low season lessons you may end up with the instructor and maybe 1-2 other people, if that. Even half a day might help you. Case in point... I signed up for a full day "group" lesson at Taos last year and I went to the highest possible class level. I ended up going through the class by myself with two amazing instructors (different one in the afternoon). Same thing has happened to me in Taos. Much better strategy than going for a private lesson.
  17. That looks amazing!
  18. Just picked up my skis from getting waxed and tuned. 5-7" of fresh pow in Austin? Bring it.
  19. Good place to stop for lunch on the way to the mountains... https://www.locandamoscal.it/home Trento is also a cool town to visit. Where are you going in the Dolomiti? I'm jealous. Enjoy it! We're going to be in France in March but we'll be near the Italian border so we'll most likely go to Sestriere one day
  20. To be fair, you were the lucky one. For Harvey, average insurance payout was $140K. Average FEMA payout (no insurance) was $4K. Your responsibility saved your ass.
