  1. They delayed kickoff of our HS game last night to 7:30. It was still balls hot, but it did make a difference as sun was mostly behind stadium wall by that point.
  2. I've spent way more of my life in the DFW area than Austin, and I really do wonder: Why can't Austin seem to get transportation/mobility issues right, ever? Dallas is far from perfect, but we have a decent light rail network (it's had some post-COVID issues but they've recommitted $$$ in the past month to go towards security and operational improvement), and we're getting a new line from North Dallas/Plano/Richardson to D/FW Airport which will be a boon for those of us that live up here and travel. And even moreso, the hike-bike trail network they've built in East and Central Dallas is actually useful. I can ride from home all the way around White Rock Lake, or to downtown/Uptown, with very little surface-street riding. So what is it that keeps Austin from being able to get even the basics right?
  3. SIAP: One of the places my wife and I have long thought we'd enjoy relocating to if we decide to bail on Texas is western North Carolina (either Asheville, or more realistically, Charlotte). But after reading this (and knowing that a portion of the state elected Madison Cawthorn), I just don't know anymore. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/republican-mark-robinson-conspiracy-theorist-north-carolina-governor-race_n_64df8cabe4b0ce7f01203a6b?unf
  4. NYT's The Daily podcast episode today goes in deep on meatball's campaign collapse. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/08/21/podcasts/the-daily/inside-the-sputtering-campaign-of-ron-desantis.html
  5. Meanwhile, ignorant older relatives of mine continue to post things like “WE’VE HAD 30 DAYS OF TRIPLE DIGITS BUT IN 2011 WE HAD 60 AND EVEN MORE IN 1980 - GLOBAL WARMING IS A HOAX!!!111”
  6. Can't remember who the Surl poster is that has access to the full Nielsen ratings breakdown by demo/daypart, but do you have that yet for July? Curious to see if the changes at KTCK and The Freak have moved the needle yet at all.
  7. Yeah, that was weird. My guess is they meant that to mean it was never *just* a terrestrial radio program, given the podcasts, videos, etc. I still think the fact they let It's Just Banter go on for years without pushing back (along with Gordo's Twitch streams, etc.) works in D&J's favor.
  8. Essentially, they are targeting each of Dan and Jake's arguments in their response and trying to shoot them down one by one - that a podcast *does* count under the noncompete, that D&J have actually been going after Ticket advertisers, and that they have been disparaging the Ticket even though they say they aren't. This is a more direct response with specific examples and cited caselaw. Very curious to see how the judge responds.
  9. Cumulus/Susquehanna fires back. https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.txnd.379893/gov.uscourts.txnd.379893.26.0.pdf
  10. This is quite a read. https://www.texastribune.org/2023/08/14/influenceable-texas-politics-ken-paxton/ Notable from the above link: Brad Parscale, who ran Trump's digital efforts in 2016 and ended up running his 2020 campaign until he was drummed out, has moved to Midland and is now apparently working for Tim Dunn, the billionaire behind Empower Texans (and many other far-far-far-right-wing efforts). Not a good sign, as Parscale is known for a lot of dirty tactics.
  11. MQS, his Empower Texans cronies and their various associated groups - and the billionaires that fund them - have done more to hurt the Lone Star State and ruin the so-called Texas mystique over the last two decades than anyone else.
  12. If D&J had simply waited out the six-month noncompete and made a few subtle changes so they weren't so clearly leveraging direct IP from their Ticket show, it's likely none of this legal brouhaha would ever happen. It was their intense desire to stick it to the man so immediately after departure, without wanting to change basically anything, that has gotten them to this point.
  13. But here’s the thing: It would have to be a GOP president for him to make it that far, and right now that still looks like it’d be Trump. And Trump wouldn’t give him the chance because he probably sees his disability as a sign of weakness.
  14. The first appearance(s) of Irving Cares at Frank Parra during a Rant remote were legitimately funny.
  15. We went to the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis a few weeks back. The first exhibit (while you’re waiting for the intro film) is about the history of the slave trade. It has life-size sculpted figures huddled in chains and recorded sounds of cries of agony. It left me shook - and Desantis should be forced to sit in there for a while and take it in.
  16. Getting serious Range Rover vibes from the new Santa Fe. https://www.autoweek.com/news/a44590687/2024-hyundai-santa-fe-teaser/
  17. I'm at about 600 miles for 2023 so far, but not much MTB lately. When I have ridden in June/July so far it's been almost all paved trails - mainly the loop from North Dallas down around WRL and back - because there's more of a breeze. I need to figure out motivation to get up super early and go ride actual unpaved trails while it's still semi-tolerable out.
  18. Having worked in the biz, I can say with relative certainty that there are still a lot of AEs with broadcast background who can sell traditional radio ads all day long, but can't seem to figure out how to attractively market the value proposition of streaming ads.
  19. Welp - Rhyner is becoming a granddad. Nothing with the Hang Zone. As you were...
  20. Pretty fascinating story about the making of “Vogue” here from legendary DJ/producer Shep Pettibone. I’d argue that the “Vogue” video by David Fincher (and the complementary but completely different take on it at the MTV Video Music Awards) are the most iconic single thing Madonna did in a career full of iconic moments. https://www.billboard.com/music/music-news/vogue-producer-shep-pettibone-interview-6575923/amp/
  21. This got brought up in the Titanic submersible thread for some reason, but it seemed more apropo for this one. My question: Where the heck is this skate park-looking concrete ramp and stairwell structure under Mopac? Can't recall ever seeing it and it's not easily identifiable from Google Maps.
  22. Gordo called for it on Muse in the News, and it didn’t take long at all.
  23. Basically, when he was at KLIF, Norm thought the Ticket was unserious, and the Ticket guys thought Norm was goofy and too inside-baseball for wider audiences. One of Gordo's earliest bits was Norm and his sidekick Andy Panda, and it made frequent references to a gambling addiction, which apparently Norm really took umbrage to. You can hear one of the really early ones (from while Norm was still on KLIF) here - it's track #8 in the player: https://www.theunticket.com/5-years-of-failed-bits-ticket-cd/ (Side note: Pretty much every track of the CD audio linked above is greatness, and a direct glimpse into the first few years of the little Ticket.)
  24. I spent a few years in Columbus while growing up in the mid 1980s, and the Hannas went to our church. Good folks.
