I expected a regional at minimum. A super regional was just gravy.

Excited for the future no matter what happens in the supers

No question that the future is bright, and I truly believe Mike White is going to get us to the WCWS in very short order. I expect we will see some attrition from this years team, as many of these girls now realize where they fit/don't fit in White's plans. The change won't look pretty initially, but it will continue to free up scholarship monies for him to bring in the type talent he needs to compete. I am sure that we are scouring the portal looking for a few bats to plug into this lineup.

Alabama is loaded with pitching.   Probably will see Goodman or Cornell tonight.

IMHO, Murphy will try and get 3-4 innings out of Goodman, and then right back to Fouts. Cornell only pitches in a throw away blowout type game.

The facts are hard to swallow for us Horn fans, but this team simply doesn't hit or play very good defense. The two errors given to Iakopo last night are plays you would expect to see on a 12U team. Pretty standard defensive rotations were ignored, and catchers are taught not to throw the ball unless they see the fielder in front of the runner. The talent discrepancy between these two teams is startling. Mike White has tried to piece mill his best 9 hitters into a lineup regardless of defensive capability and unfortunately we are now not hitting or playing good defense. I think we steal one tonight, but I am not sure there is enough firepower for us to win two in a row.

  3. I mentioned earlier in this thread that this super regional would come down to the Horns ability to score runs. I feel Elish will keep us in games, but the Horns have got to find a way to get runners on base and put pressure on the Bama defense. We may see Mike White employ the old school "get em on, get em over, get em in" offensive scheme, as Fouts has only given up 3-4 long balls all season. For this team to have a chance in game two, the top two hitters in the lineup have got to find their way on base.

  4. It will all come down to hitting this weekend for the Horns. Alabama can really swing the bats, and will score runs. The question is can Texas piece together enough offense to keep pace. If Bama has a weakness, it is their pitching staff...and I do mean staff. They may use 3-4 pitchers this weekend, and all of them can be had, by a good offensive team. Montana Fouts, the freshman, is their best pitcher, but she has had some rough outing sprinkled in this season as well. I sat and watched Murray State put up 10 runs on Bama this year at the Troy tournament, so they can be scored on. I believe that Mike White and the Horns will need some innings from someone other than Elish to win the series. Bama is too good offensively to throw the same pitcher for 21 innings.

  5. You simply can't compare the number of upsets in MBB or WBB march madness tournament to upsets in the softball regionals. They are two totally different animals. Double elimination is set up to make sure that the best team wins, more often than not. A mid major program may have a pitcher that gets hot and beats a P5 school once, but the odds are slim that she is going to beat them twice on Sunday, for all the marbles. That is exactly what happened to Houston vs. our Horns. There is lots of talent is the game, but the true dominant pitchers are usually sitting in the P5 dugouts. Unfortunately, kids like Meghan Good at JMU or Nicole Newman at Drake are few and far between. Most would rather sit and have a chance at a ring, than be the ace at a smaller school. Small school softball is like minor league baseball....lots of long bus rides, subway sandwiches, and Comfort Inns....I can promise you that the Florida Gators are riding a bus to OKC and they are grabbing "to go" items from Subway either.

It looks a lot like WBB - there's not a lot of upsets in the first couple rounds (that are at a team's home site).

This is because the game still revolves around dominant pitching, and the big programs have the most dominant pitchers. A girl like Barnhill or Elish can throw every inning and gives your team a chance to win every game. The Barnhills of the world ain't going to Sam Houston State. The fact that the game has evolved from a short game mentality to a long ball mentality compounds this. Big swingers are more prone to the K than slapper kids. The transfer portal, unfortunately will make this worse. If a Mid Major program gets lucky and finds that dominant ace, they then have to worry about keeping them for 4 years. Much like Shannon Saile at OU....dominant at FIU for a few years, and then jumps at the opportunity to be the #3 on a great team.

Not to go back to the draft talk but Todd McShay has Collin Johnson going to the Jaguars #9 overall in the first round in his way too early 2020 mock draft...for whatever that is worth...which is nothing

    Put him in the calculator.

  8. At the risk of sounding like Captain Obvious, this is a really big series for the Horns. With a couple of wins, Texas will gain a bunch of confidence heading to the end of the season. Lose this series, and God forbid, get blown out, and it maybe too late in the year to get our Mojo back. Mike White and Patti will both coach as if this is the WCWS.
