This is probably the wrong place for serious opinions, but here goes anyway: I'm looking to sell a custom AR and not sure how to value it, so I was hoping to get some serious opinions as to what you all think it's worth. Platform is a Noveske N6 Gen 1 chainsaw upper/lower/BCG, with mostly Troy components/furniture (13" Bravo quad Battlerail, folding tritium sights, Battle Ax CQB stock, sling mounts, muzzle brake, etc.) but exceptions are Giessele 2-stage trigger (think it's the SSA), Ergo grip, BCM Gunfighter 3B charging handle, and EOTech 512. Parted out it's probably worth $1,750-$2000 give or take, I'd guess. Brand new, I think it was about $2700 before the EOTech but that was four years ago and I don't remember. There's maybe 50 rounds through it and not a scratch. I just never really used it. Noveske still sells the Gen 1 u/l and complete rifles.

What do you all think? Is it worth $2500? More? Less?

    Rules...

  2. These days I always wrap baby backs during the cook, but when during the cook varies depending on what I'm looking for in a final product.  I wanted a "competition" bite, so I smoked them at 250* for 1.5 hours, then wrapped for 1.5 hours.  Yup, only takes 3 hours.  My wife (no pics) really likes fall-off-the-bone (insert wife/bone joke here), so for that I smoke them for 1 hour, then wrapped for 2.  That 30 minute delta wrapped/unwrapped makes all the difference.

  3. What part of the coast?  Budget?  West end of Galveston, you can get a house on the bay side for the fishing and just drive across the road to the beach for the part day trips.  Pools will be tough - likely restricted to one that has a community pool or a hot tub that can double as a plunge pool.

VRBO is a great place to start.

  4. From placing my order to trying them on in 21 hours and 31 minutes.  No special shipping.  I'm in DFW, btw.

Great feel.  Looking forward to breaking these in.

Costco has the "Pit Boss Ceramic BBQ Grill" for $750 online, but if they happen to have them in the location near you, they are $600 in the store.

    https://www.costco.com/Pit-Boss-Ceramic-BBQ-Grill.product.100378747.html

    Am definitely eyeing this thing.

Buy it and report back.  With pics.  Of grill.  And food.  And wife (if applicable).

I love my BGE, but there are so many competitors now, about which I hear good things, that if anything ever happened to my egg, I'd probably have to research the hell out of a replacement.

  6. Rebuilding knowledge from the other thread...

I built this a few years ago:

Without the platesetter, I use it for elevated grilling:

With the platesetter, I use it for multilevel smoking:

Also comes in handy when you break your platesetter on Christmas eve and still have to smoke a rack of pork:

  7. ^^Thanks to all who posted above.

It's a large family room, gonna have tots running around destroying things.  Viewing Distance Calculator says that we can take all the length width up to just over 85".  We'll watch movies but we aren't "serious" so not planning on surround sound, running wires through the walls, etc.

My understanding is that modern TVs have crappy built-in speakers, hence the supposed need for a sound bar (and I can see a subwoofer, too).  I assume that I'd need a receiver to run speakers external to the TV?  If so, about Yamaha...

I've had a Yamaha receiver running almost daily going on 26 years now, and I love it.  On the other hand, a friend of mine has gone through 3 Yamaha receivers in the last 7 years or so, and that has me concerned about the reliability of modern Yamahas.  Should I be concerned?

I guess I can go with 4K, but I don't even know how to find content in 4K.  Do I want a "smart tv?"  I have streaming boxes already, but I assume "smart tvs" are the standard.  What to look for, and avoid?  I just sure as hell don't want a TV that will watch me (camera) and listen in on my conversations (e.g. Alexa, Google Home, etc. capability).

    I'm in DFW, btw.

  8. Posting here because I imagine that I'll be buying my first "home theater" stuff...

My 12yo 60 inch DLP died last night.  I haven't bought a TV in 9 years and don't know jack about today's TVs.  I want >60" screen and ability to use Roku and Apple TV, etc.  I've been told I'll likely want a "sound bar," which I had to google before going outside to yell at some kids on my lawn.  This sort of thing I'd usually research the hell out of and hunt for sales, but I have no time as I need a new TV for this weekend.

Please edumacate me, wise Surly home theatre experts.

I’ve got the Cartwright in bourbon.

    Pics?

I really want a Nolan in chocolate but not offered; the bourbon looks too reddish for my taste but would appreciate a real world pic of your boots in bourbon.  Thinking the Duke in chocolate instead....

The most popular Colt caliber in recent times is of course the .45 Colt, followed by the .44 Special &  the .357. The new production SAA has gotten mighty scarce and the guys at the Colt forum are speculating that it is going out of production, as there is only one gunsmith assembling & finishing the final product. He's & old guy and on the verge of retirement - with no one being trained to replace him.  Just a handful of 2018 production guns have been reported on the Colt forum.

Of course the prices have gone up - MSRP is now about $1,800 for a standard model, but dealers on Gunbroker are asking a $600 or $700 premium. No custom shop orders are being accepted. Up until last year the shop said a customer would have a 2 year wait. I read last month of a fellow on the Colt forum who had just received his SAA that he had ordered from the Custom Shop over two years ago. Crazy, but they say good deals on new & used SAAs can be found if you look hard & long enough...

...Love that genuine Colt color case hardening....

Posting this again because new thread, new site and all.

A NIB Colt SAA blue/color case hardened 4.75" barrel in .45 Colt was my Holy Grail for years.  Last summer I finally won a bid for one, thankfully - as Brat indicated, I was running out of time.  Brat was instrumental in helping me understand what to look for, what to avoid, and how to operate the revolver without damaging it.  Thanks again, Brat!

I still have to get a holster and belt rig made for it...

    Wait until they start school.

Patient Zero is already in preschool 3 days/week.  That's where he gets everything to spread through the family.

One of you will probably still get sick, but sometimes you have to go strict quarantine method at least until the fevers break.  Don't let them play/bathe together.  If one parent gets sick, they go sleep in the guest bed.  Sick parent also doesn't make any food for a non sick person.

We do all that stuff pretty well, yet it still spreads through the family.  It's incredibly predictable, too.  Patient Zero, then Mrs. Sola (still no pics) followed quickly by our youngest, then me right about the time that I think I might actually escape it.  It's so predictable, I can call my shot.  When the flu hit and started making its way through the 4 of us, on a Tuesday I told everyone that I would be symptomatic Saturday.  Saturday afternoon, I went from a 98.4* to 102.7* fever in 4 hours.

For this to happen despite all our precautions, it reminds me of that scene in Aliens where they are in Medical and the aliens are advancing.  The trackers read that the aliens are inside the room but they don't see any.  Ripley says something like, "We missed something.  Something not in the blue prints..." Then they realize they didn't account for space between floors... I'm trying to figure out what our space in between floors is.

Speaking of aliens, when my kids are teething, the drool is everywhere.  That doesn't help with keeping disease from spreading.  My kid coming at me, drenched in infectious drool, always reminds me of this:

Which Costco? You have my interest. What's your method on smoking them?

Costco in Southlake.  I have a BGE, so my method might be different than what would work for those using traditional smokers.  I set it up for indirect cook and get it to 550*.  I put on the rack of pork and close all the vents to allow the roast to sear as the temp drops down to 325*-350*.  Once at temp, I open up the vents and let it cook in that range.  Takes it about 1.5-2 hours to cook to 140 internal where I pull it and rest it (rising to at least 145* internal) for 15-30 minutes before carving and plating.  I like to use hickory but I'd imagine anything but mesquite would be fine.  Also, you could skip the sear and just smoke at 325*-350* and that works, too.

  13. Right there with ya, Homercles.  Our two are 2 years apart and still in diapers.  Zero support network, and nearest family is 1400 miles away; so jealous of our friends who have family babysitters available at a moment’s notice.  Mrs. Sola (no pics) and I have a super solid relationship but the lack of any time at all to ourselves is incredibly taxing.  I dream of the days of being DINKs - that will never be again but we’ve got to figure out a way to have lives beyond work, kids, and exhaustion.

  14. Fucking Hell.

Last 5 months have seen this originating from the same 3yo Patient Zero:

-Nov/Dec: Severe gastroenteritis makes its way through entire family... TWICE... 6 weeks total.

-Jan: sinus infection makes it through entire family... 2 weeks total.

-Feb: Flu makes it’s way through entire family... 3.5 weeks total.

-Mar: respiratory infection through entire family... 2 weeks total

    -Today: Patient Zero presents a 101.3* fever ... herewego.gif

I never got sick before having kids.  I’m starting to lose it.

It's ok, generally the "brisket price" thread doubles as the "all smoked meats" price thread.

Cool.  I usually hung out on the Dallas Meat Deals thread so I didn't know that.

I LOVE smoking racks of pork, the few times of the year when they can be found.  Costco has them right now.  $2.99/lb.  If you aren't familiar think pork prime rib:

  16. I'm looking at 2018 GM 1500 and Ford F150s.  I read in the previous thread that "Truck Month" was the time to buy, and March seems to be "Truck Month" but I'm not ready to buy now.  I assume that when the 2019 redesigned GM trucks hit dealerships, the 2018s will be on firesale.  Is there another time of year (other than intro of 2019 models) that there will be heavy incentives on the F150s?  TIA
