Speaking of single actions, I have a 1874 SAA with a 121XX serial number.  Letter from Colt says made 1874, so made during the first full calendar year of production.  .45 Long Colt, 5.5 inch barrel. It has stag grips that look right and have shrunk on the frame, but can't swear they came on the gun new.

Something’s wrong.  Pics aren’t showing up for me.

Would he ever actually consider trying to do that shit again (here)?... My guess is either this guy is regretfully chewing 30 dicks in his mouth right now, or is trying to figure out how to do the same thing again (because that's the way those kinds of people are).

This time we have a heads up.  The Surly community seems to have significant resources at its disposal.  If we see him coming, then a intervention would be warranted:

how easy/difficult are lizard skin to take care of compared to say full quill ostrich?

what do you need to do to take care of and condition them?

    Per Tecovas:

Ostrich:  "In general, you may care for your ostrich boots in the same way that you’d care for your smooth leather or calfskin boots."

Reptilian Leather:  "In general, you may care for your caiman and lizard boots in the same way that you’d care for your calfskin or ostrich boots, except that we would recommend conditioning every month, regardless of the frequency of wear, to avoid leather cracking between scales."

Additional info for Lizard/Caiman in the spoiler.

    Spoiler

    General Care:

    • In general, you may care for your caiman and lizard boots in the same way that you’d care for your calfskin or ostrich boots, except that we would recommend conditioning every month, regardless of the frequency of wear, to avoid leather cracking between scales
    • Store boots in a dry and dark place
    • Alternate boot-wearing days to let boots properly dry out
    • Ideally, store with tissue, newspaper, or a cedar shoe tree that does not stretch the leather
    • Brush dirt off after every wear with a horsehair brush; use a damp cloth if necessary

    Conditioning:

We recommend conditioning every 1-2 months, depending on how often they're worn. This process may leave the boots with a slightly 'matte' finish. Here’s how to condition:

    •     Remove all dirt or dust with horsehair brush or damp cloth
    •     While boots are still damp, lightly apply a conditioner over the entire boot, ideally with your fingers but can also do with a brush
    •     Let conditioner dry, then buff with horsehair brush

    Polishing:

Should be done only after any conditioning, but it's entirely based on preference. If the boots are clean and you don't have time to condition, using spray shine sparingly should be fine! Use a neutral polish to avoid colors not matching. Here’s how to polish:

    •     After conditioning and buffing the boots (so they are dry), apply a thin coat of wax-based neutral polish to all the areas you wish to shine. The entire area to be shined should be covered with a slightly shiny layer.
    •     Let the polish dry, then brush off with a soft cloth
    •     Buff with a horsehair brush to the desired level of shine

  5. Wife (no pics) drives a 2015.5 Tahoe purchased May 2015.  Replaced battery summer 2018; Internet tells me battery life expectancy in Tahoes is ~3 years.

AC unit won’t blow cold as of December 2018.  Internet also tells me of massive shitfuckery around AC units on Tahoes and Silverados 2015-2017.  Apparently, GM extended warranty repairs on certain vehicles with certain failures, explained here.  I’m taking the Tahoe in this Monday for service.  I’m gonna hammer as hard as I can - no reason at all why AC should fail after 3.5 years.

Still bullshit.  Gonna look at the Ford Expedition next time around.

How are the Orient Mako, Mako II, Mako USA XL and Ray?  I'm pretty tempted by the (JDM?)  Mako II in the blue or white/luminous face.  Thoughts?

I got the orient ray ii and it's a look and a champ. the blue face. it gets comments often and goes with almost anything i wear. i often shower and sleep with it on.

This intrigues me.  I’ve been looking for a stainless steel band dive watch in the $100-$250 range for some time.  Daily wear, active, pool and shower, water sports, would like to take to 120’ diving. Prefer battery (automatic?).   The Mako II seems like a contender, but website says it’s only suitable for ‘skindiving’ (snorkeling) despite 200m water resistance rating

Where else should I be looking for a watch like this in this price range?  Invecta? Citizen?

  7. Try Wildcatter Ranch out by Possum Kingdom Lake.  For accommodations, they have a bunch of options depending on party size and budget, ranging from a luxurious house to individual cabins to hotel rooms.  There are all kinds of activities, some even OK for kids under 5, like feeding the longhorns each morning.  Or just chill out with the great views and peaceful grounds.  Also, the onsite restaurant is quite good - mesquite grilled steaks and world-class CFS.

If not there, I'd look to the Texas coast.  Get adjacent beachfront houses in Galveston or Port A.  Maybe Condos in South Padre, but that's a haul with little kids from DFW.

EDIT:  With regard to accommodations at Wildcatter, the house rental is self explanatory.  The cabins are arranged in groups of 4, with each group next to each other, so easy congregation during nap time.  The hotel is the least glamorous, but it has a TON of communal space within eyeshot of the rooms.  There's also a cabin set out from the rest, but it wouldn't work for a group as large as yours.

Avoid hurricane season. My trip got jacked and was a makeup. We went the end of March. Going in April this year. There are a number of boats that go. Ours held 12. Some hold as few as 6.

Also, PROTIP: download Motion X GPS app on your phone before you go. Your phone is a GPS. You don't need cellular data. A GPS with Google/Apple map aerial overlay made a big difference out there. The guys that didn't have them couldn't find their honeyholes the next day. The place is huge and all looks the same. My buddy and I beelined 20 minutes to our honey hole, morning and afternoon, three days straight. Fished an area no larger than 500 yards long the entire time and smoked them.

So, DMJ runs different motherships, or there are other charter companies (I’d assume so) going out as well?  If other charters, any recs?

The protip makes it sound as if there are no guides to take guests out on the tender skiffs to wade / drift sites?  I’m having difficulty envisioning what the fishing arrangements are once onsite.

  9. I finally said screw it - I've wanted a pair of black lizard skin boots for ~25 years, so I pulled the trigger.  The Nash in Midnight Lizard.  When I pulled them from the packaging, I was pleasantly surprised by how truly beautiful they are.  Pic won't do them justice.

Tecovas' customer service and pricing makes it too easy.  shutupandtakemymoney.jpg.  Ordered Tuesday, had them by 10AM Wednesday.  Not pictured: the matching belt.  The belt isn't as robust as I'd like but it's more than adequate for a dress belt.

  10. @Mac8111 @4th and 5  Thanks for sharing, that Chandeleurs trip sounds like a dream trip to me.  Any idea if he does split charters?  Also, do y’all recommend a specific time of year for reds (I assume fall)?

To everyone:  on a related note, I’m planning a separate trip to Venice or the surrounding area.  I recall that several posters have fished that area.  Any recs for guides, accommodations, when to go/not go, etc?  We want to target reds, if that matters.  TIA.

  11. My ostrich Tecovas (posted here) broke in quickly and have held up well under heavy wear.  Love 'em.

I recently was looking for a pair of light brown boots, and my wife (no pics) wanted me to try the the suede Tecovas - The Shane in honey suede.  I wasn't so sure since I've never owned suede anything, and the online pics of the honey suede made it look more yellow than light brown.  But with free returns, why not take a shot?  Glad I did - they are sharp and ridiculously comfortable.  Internet pics didn't do the color justice.  These probably won't, either:

Not pictured: smoked au ju, scalloped taters, grilled asparagus.  For the uninitiated, think pork prime rib.  Get these while you can at Costco; I usually only find them during TG, Xmas, and (this year) Easter.

Anyone put a stubby antenna on?  I’m wondering how reception is affected.

I was disappointed with mine.  I live in the center of the DFW Metroplex, so I expected decent reception.  Basically, only the highest power stations (i.e. top 40, top rap, Nashville country, etc.) came in consistently.  AM reception was intermittent at best, and if it could even acquire a HD signal, it would drop it frequently.  Went back to factory; still want to look at others that won’t smack my garage door.

  14. Damn.  I came here to post a funny, then read about ocugolf and PvilleStang.  Legit Ts&Ps, guys.  PVS, keep us informed.

    Conversation over pizza dinner tonight:

    4 y/o son:  "Mommy?"

Mrs. Sola (no pics):  "Yes, Sweetheart?"

4 y/o son:  "I love you, mommy, but I like pizza better."

    Me: *LOLOLOLOL*

Bullion: updated but classic French, in a really cool space downtown.  Dallas' only Michelin star chef.  Definitely see and be seen, but the food and service measure up.  Great place for special occasion.

The French Room: classic Dallas dress up spot.  New chef that worked at great places (including Heston Blumenthol's place in London) is rolling out his new menu.  I think this is the last place in Dallas that requires a jacket for men in the main room.

Flora Street Cafe: more hip than the above two, but still a place to dress up and have a grown up night out.  Do the tasting menu if you are somewhat adventurous eaters.

Fearing's.  Start with a drink at Rattlesnake, then go in for a big meal that will be excellent.  Service is perfect and they will do up your anniversary.  That's what they do.

The Mansion:  jury is still out on the changes the new chef is making.     The bar scene is still great, if a bit douchy.

Lucia:  if you can get in, this is a different way to celebrate.  Much more casual and homey, but service is very intimate; it may be the best meal in town.  And walking around Bishop Arts after - go to get a slice of pie and or some chocolate at Dude -- can make this a romantic night.

Skipping obvious big steakhouse style places (Al Biernet's, Prime, etc.) because of your post and focusing on chef driven places.

This is fantastic - some places I've heard of, others I had no idea existed.  Regardless of what we do for the anniversary, I want to use this list for date nights in 2019 - I'm going to make it a New Year's resolution.
