College basketball coaching carousel: 2024 edition
Jhawk replied to Machinator's topic in Basketball
Did some looking and here are the rumors I was able to find: 2013: Gottfried, Endfield (dunk city), Wright, Stevens, Shaka, settled on Alford 2019: Cal, Barnes, Dixon, settle on Cronin. I'm not sure which are rumors and who rejected overtures, but the fact that this many people were on the list each time is insanity. The AD should be fired. Especially when you consider he has now hired 4 football coaches as well as 3 basketball coaches. -

Bruin, can you list all of the coaches that have rejected UCLA between this hire and the Alford hire? -

There you go. Just like I said people here can’t come up with one quantifiable reason that A&M is a bad job. It isn’t that they ruin coaching careers, under pay, have shit facilities, or aren’t willing to spend money on basketball. It’s because you have to have some form of mental retardation to want to be associated with that school. It’s fine to believe that. I don’t like A&M either. But don’t talk about knowing a good job from a bad job if that’s the best you’ve got. -

Disinterested in continuing and then you respond a second time to my post. Very derka of you. How about this... Buzz took the A&M job because he sees it as a better job. Is he close enough to the basketball world to have a better understanding of good job vs. bad job than both of us or do you have a better understanding than him too? -

What do you want? Barnes could have been the best coach in Clemson history. He didn't stick around to find out and he was arguably knocking on that door in just 4 years. Everyone here is getting caught up in what is a good job and what isn't. With the budgets and money that A&M has and is spending A&M is a great job and that's clearly how coaches see it otherwise they wouldn't have gotten someone like Jimbo and they would have gone after a Shaka Smart instead of a Buzz Williams. I know that is going to piss 99% of the people here off but if coaches didn't see it as a good job then they would absolutely run from it. Any coach has the potential to be the best coach in the history of their school, almost every coach wants to be the best coach in the history of basketball and the best way to do that is to keep moving up to where resources and recruiting is more plentiful. Marquette had restrictions because of realignment so he took a job with less restrictions due to budgets. Now he's taking a job with a bigger budget, higher pay, better recruiting, and in a conference where he can potentially win or be in the top 3 each year, which wouldn't happen at VT. AND the expectations are lower as has been stated here by everyone that aggie overpays and has low expectations. Wouldn't you like a job where you get possibly twice your market value and are only expected to win at half the rate? Sign me the fuck up, that's a great job. Oh I can actually win on top of that if I continue to coach at my level just because I'm going to get better talent from the local pool? Fucking Hell get me in there right now. The aggie job is a good job. Other than being in college station and being aggie, not one person has stated why it is a bad job. You could argue that it is a better job than any of the blue bloods right now because of the massive expectations that would be made of a coach following Self, Roy, K, or Calipari. Aggieland has none of that pressure. -

UCLA going after Barnes is a real head scratcher at Barnes' age. LSU will be very interesting to watch though. They and But couldn't you say that about any job? He could have been the best coach in marquette history if he stay. Same goes for A&M. Further, if he gets it done at A&M then he is probably in line for a big boy job, just like gillispie was. Clyde got A&M to a S16 and finished 2nd in the big12 with them. It is possible to win there and he didn't even have elite talent (Deandre Jordan was after Clyde). A&M just spent $6M on a new locker room and millions more on other upgrades to their arena in 2017. I know that A&M sucks and that everyone here has to hate them with a passion but the truth of the matter is that it isn't a bad job. It is certainly better than VT and better than Marquette at this point. Plus, buzz is 46 years old. If he wins there for 4-7 years with an elite 8 or so and is in the top 3 of the SEC each year then he is going to be on lists at blue blood programs. He might be #3-4 on the lists but he will be on them. If buzz built VT to what he did and that is an acceptable level of success then he will have zero problem doing that at A&M. Coaches don't have the bias about jobs that fans do. He sees a place that he gets paid, can win, and can possibly move up from. At 46 that is the perfect job. -
Nope. He’s actually only a junior and might have qualified for a medical red shirt this year. Mitch lightfoot is our only senior next year I believe.

Dedric is an all American. When an AA wants to come to your school and you are asked to bring his brother in a package deal then you bring them both. Everyone knew this was a possibility and no one is surprised. If we didn’t have injuries and suspensions we might be playing for a title right now. Doke leaving would be a bit of a surprise. Grimes doesn’t necessarily seem bought in at this point but he has a body and talent to waste a draft pick on. Ku has a lot of openings coming up. Should be interesting to see how we fill them given everything that is going on.

If aggy is going to spend the money to compete then it is a good job. They overpay for mediocrity and are in a talent hotbed. The SEC is up right now, but traditionally has been a 1-2 team league (1-2 teams can win it any given year) that is very winnable. If that isn’t attractive then the only attractive jobs in the country are The blue bloods. -
Welp I would say that beard is going to be at tech for a long time and if he wins on Monday then most likely forever. Good for tech. Good for the big 12. I have 3 bets and my bracket pool having Virginia win though. So I’m going to have to root for my pocket book Monday. Should be a boring ass game.

Hahaha... He's a great fit for KU. It's good to see him so loose on the job and having fun. We haven't had enthusiasm like his around campus for 10 years. Also, we're number 38 in the rankings for 2020 commits. Obviously it's wayyyy too early for that stuff but nice to see we have some commits this early.
-
That sucks to lose doke and/or Lawson. Going to be tough next year.
-
Not going to lie, that's pretty dope but with how many dleiveries they need to make on a daily basis in a city like Kansas City or maybe Austin, they would have to have 5-10 of those flying over the city and a hundred drones on each one. They'd have to have 20 workers up there just repacking drones. Just offload the work to UPS/USPS/Fedex and call it good like they do now. Or even uber like I've seen.

Fucking hipster dads are the worst.

I think in some cases it is common to report minor violations when regime change happens. I know we have done it after every coach since terry allen in 2003 (maybe this is why KU is where coaches die?) but we haven't withheld pay. I think UNC has done it multiple times and I know a few other schools have. Clears the slate, allows new coaches cover to boot players, etc. I don't think that KU has much, if any, leverage here. We definitely don't want to end up in court because if the 4* Louisiana guys got paid to come to KU and basketball players are getting paid to come to KU then that sounds like a systemic problem, also known as lack of institutional control. With our last AD a lot of shady shit was happening and Beaty was his last stand. I wouldn't doubt that he let Beaty do anything and everything he wanted in that last 1.5 years because it was the only chance the AD had at saving his own skin. We're actually pretty lucky to have Jeff Long right now. A lesser AD would be in way over his head. I'd rather have a guy like Gene Smith or Tom Jurich right now but JL should be able to get us through this stuff with minimal damage. I just hope he doesn't roll over for the NCAA. We know what that gets you, I'd rather be defiant and fight them at this point when the NCAA is arguably at its weakest.
-
I definitely think that’s how it looks. But the ncaa is up in our shit right now and if we end up with a bowl ban or some penalties in football then it won’t look like that at all. It’ll look like our ex cheated on us and did everything wrong in the relationship when the prenuptial agreement clearly stated no cheating. I don’t think KU is going to win much here or if there is even anything to win. But it’s easier to withhold payment than it is to go collect it if he’s already spent it on a boat for Lake Austin.
-
Definitely on the marble palace but we got Adidas to pay the players.
-
Miles can't do any worse so we have that going for us. Snyder is an awful comparison. He is arguably a top 5-7 coach all time. Beaty is statistically a bottom 5 coach all time and the worst coach of all time by win percentage for coaches with 4 years experience. Snyder was 18-26 in his first 4 years. Beaty didn't take the JUCO route until year 4 when his head was on the chopping block.
-
This. We come down hard on ourselves in football for a year or two and then we might be better off in basketball. Other schools have done this when cleaning out the closets from terminated regimes. Get the new coach a clean slate in the case of a rebuild. It is verifiable that he did not work his ass off. The fattest fuck of the 4 coaches was the only one who was willing to work hard. Beaty was a shit coach, no way around it, and once it was known then he decided to offer whole juco teams scholarships to KU so he could save his ass for one more year.
-
Here is my no $9.95 take... KU is getting investigated by the NCAA right now. That isn't just in basketball, it looks to be football as well. If the NCAA is involved, which we've been told that the NCAA has been alerted, then there is going to be SOMETHING. Whether that is systemic cheating in football or beaty paid for a meal when he shouldn't have, who knows at this point. The argument that KU appears to be making, based on articles I've read, is that Beaty not only personally committed violations, but he also wasn't technically fired mid-season. If he was fired, then the money would have been due, but he continued to get paychecks on schedule and the lump sum never became due until after violations were discovered. So it isn't a recapture thing really because KU likely started cleaning out the closets when the basketball stuff came up and found the football stuff. Now what did beaty do? No idea. But we must be confident enough that it is bad enough to pose a threat to his payout but not bad enough to pose a threat to the future of the program under Miles. KU put the money with a 3rd party escrow group so it isn't necessarily about the money. My guess is that we don't want him working in the conference, we don't want to have him walk away clean if there are penalties (which there will be), and we don't want to pay 100% of the money if we don't have to. This seems like a settlement case to me where we either agree upon an unspecified sum (KU pays $3mm) or we settle for 50% or something like that. The saddest part of all of this is that it looks like we paid all of that money over the last 4 years and we cheated to get 6 wins out of the deal. Once again, why Beaty ever be employed by anyone, even as a towel boy is beyond me.

It is a historic job, not necessarily a great one. That being said, good coaches can win big there. Fuck, even steve lavin had a decent run there. Great coaches probably won't head west because great coaches can win anywhere. -

I think he just got stale at Pitt. He clearly still has it with what he was able to do at TCU. UCLA might get a lot of energy from him and I would guess that he has them in the tourney in the first year. I agree with this but then you kinda look at the timing of his moves. The Big East was extremely strong when he got into the head spot at Marquette but was decimated in 2012-2013 with conference realignment. They didn't get shit for TV money and the schools with decent markets were plucked at will by bigger conferences. So he goes to VTech because he won't have to overcome a resources gap to compete with bigger schools, just a talent and location gap, which he arguably was already battling at Marquette. He proves he can still coach while at VT and Aggie has a top 5 budget in college athletics in a top 5 recruiting hotbed for basketball and they're in a conference that has been coming on strong in basketball in the last 2 years. I know that no one here will ever see why you go coach at A&M but when you think about it, the move makes total sense and he is only 46 years old. If Buzz does well at aggie and pushes them to the top 2-3 in the SEC and gets an elite 8 or two while there then he will be in line by age 53-55 to take over one of the truly historic programs in cbb. Coaches don't have hatred of schools like fans do. Coaches don't see aggie as a cesspool. They see schools like that as either a place they can win, a place they can get paid, or a place they can use to further their career, and sometimes all 3. It's actually a great move for buzz because he will have the ability to get all 3 there if he just maintains being the coach he is with newfound resources and recruiting grounds. -
So do you think it is logical that if the dems didn't reject Bill Clinton then the republicans sure as hell don't have to reject Trump? See where this goes? Nowhere.. it goes absolutely nowhere but feigned outrage by both sides. The only solution is for both parties to look at themselves and say "why do we have scumbags at the top?" But rather than do that you have the party insiders reinforcing the ability for the scum to stay at the top, like the dems have done with super delegates and whatever AOC is bitching about with vendors and sponsors of new candidates being blackballed. I'm sure the repubs have their version of this as well. It's all garbage. Be outraged at the machines, not the other party for not admonishing their shitty people.
-
I think what he is fishing for is "do you approve of him and his behavior or not?" You seem to be giving him half a pass but also half a fail. You could just come out and say "it doesn't matter" like the trump people have with pussy grabbing, or say "Unwanted advances on women are unwanted and disqualify you from being a candidate. If a woman is uncomfortable then you are in the wrong, regardless of era." Biden was doing this stuff when he was in the white house. Either enable him or reprimand him already.
