  1. Two different groups came by last night two hours apart and ate pecans off the ground for an hour but didn't go anywhere near the feeder 100 yards away with corn and the Sawaiian Crush. Can't leave a corn trail either because the damn starlings will eat it all. Starlings will also eat the hog bait, too. Next step I guess is to mix up a bucket of the fermented stuff and let it sit for a few days then bury it in a hole next to the feeder and hope they come check it out. This location is literally right up in the corner between neighbors' fence and the highway, there is nowhere to set up a blind or shoot them that would be safe. Also does anyone know why these Spypoint cameras are consistently 10 degrees too cold? The ones we have out at the other ranch are the same way.
  2. If only she’d pay as much attention to the road and other traffic as she does to flipping through the Sirius channels to find the last 60 seconds of a song she likes.
  3. Was it Rhea you talked to at Briley (long gray hair)? She is very honest and straightforward. All of them are pretty straightforward. They are good people. They'll get it for you as soon as they can. 686 is a good choice. The price point is low(ish) and the quality and service is very good compared to some of the other brands. The action is supposedly the same in all 68x models, the difference in price comes down to outside materials and finishes. On the shorter barrel, that's what you want for hunting. Generally speaking, if you don't know where the target is coming from and you have to see it and then move and mount the gun, shorter barrels are lighter and easier to move. 26-28" is just right. You don't want to be trying to mount and swing a heavy 32 inch barrel O/U in a dove field. Longer barrels are better for premounted games. FITASC is the only regular sporting game that requires low gun and although most people use the longer barrels, they all know (or are supposed to know) where the target is coming from. Upland hunting can be very surprising and fast paced in comparison. You made a good choice. The only comment I will make is that for an extra $1000 or so, you can upgrade to a 20/28 combo (as mentioned above) with an extra barrel. Hunting quail with a 28 is a lot of fun, too.
  4. So... flesh that out more. What does a bigger payload (i.e. a bigger shell) necessarily accomplish that couldn't be done in some other way, either through shot size or pattern density (i.e. choke)?
  5. When I was younger and more stupidly macho, I refused to think that a 20 was as capable as as 12. ("BUT IT'S NOT AS BIG! I NEED MOAR! MACHO!") But the reasoning here is correct. A 12 gauge gun is going to be heavier to carry in the field and for the distances one would normally shoot "skeet" and upland birds, there is no real difference in the pattern with smaller birdshot. There isn't enough time for the pattern to open up for the extra 1/4oz of payload to make any difference. For reasons I don't need to go into here, many registered skeet shooters shoot 20 gauge in the 12 gauge event and it doesn't hurt them.
  6. Yeah, not putting it in the feeder itself. Just want to attract them to the location. Today I poured a trail of corn and cherry koolaid from the original spot over to the future feeder location where there is another camera set up. Put a five gallon bucket full of corn and strawberry jello and water and will just leave it there for a few days and see what eventually shows up at night
  7. Welp, I always knew there were hogs down here. Last night I threw out a bag of corn and set up a camera next to an opening under the fence and got some proof. Some big fuckers and they stayed over an hour eating up all the corn. That looks like a pretty big sow there on the left. Next step is to go to Buccees and buy one of those feeders and set it up with some smelly bait (strawberry koolaid?) and attract them to a safer place to shoot. This spot is too close to the highway and right up on the neighbor's fence.
  8. I've seen this big guy standing next to the highway the past two nights as I've come home from locking up my chickens. Lots of pecans and acorns in that bar ditch. Very large rack. I need to set up a feeder next to my new pond and see what comes along. I'm curious what might show up now.
  9. We have some domestic turkeys next door to my rural property down here in Fort Bend County. They are as annoying and loud as all hell. The property is very narrow and there is not enough room to really shoot anything unless you are very very careful of what is behind your target. Usually it is not a safe shot. For instance, I'd really like to shoot those fucking turkeys but the neighbors' house is right behind their pen. So they live on.
  10. OK, I will revise and say that there could be circumstances where I might do it, you mention some I hadn't considered before, but I think there are very few. On one of the shotgun forums I'm on there are guys who make it sound like they buy something and then get tired of it and sell it a few months later and then buy something new and then repeat the process. I don't get that. Like you said, if I like something enough to buy it once, I'll just keep it and buy something new if I want it and just throw the old one in the safe. I might change my mind some day or maybe it would be good to lend to someone or at the very least my kids might love having it after I am dead and gone. Selling just to get a few bucks in one's pocket seems kind of shortsighted to me. It's like being an African chief with a bunch of cows. You can never have too many, IMO.
  11. Smart. There is a whole untapped population of douchebags out there all over the country just waiting for the next douchebag thing to buy. Especially ultra-trim fit shirts with fake pearl snaps. (ducks)
  12. Word. Have never understood that except in tight financial circumstances where it is required to put food on the table. "I didn't like it so I sold it" makes no sense to me. Different strokes for different folks, I get it. No need to flame. Everyone is entitled to his own opinions.
  13. Not at all trying to make this political, but I do think it is an accurate observation to say that there are some parties in power in the federal government right now who think it is a good thing that ammo is harder to find and acquire and who are actively working to make it even harder. Or, to be generous, they are at the very least not worried about making it easier. Bottom line is, yes, I agree, more shortages are coming, at least as long as the executive branch is controlled by those who are hostile to private firearm ownership, maybe even longer if you consider the permanent bureaucracy.
  14. Can we keep him? Can we keep him? Mom! Please??!?!
  15. I've got an 1895 with a lower-tier finish and I love that gun. Very tempted by this one just to put a scope on it and turn it into a pig killer.
  16. Did not understand the hire two years ago, still don't understand it. He's a dumb guy who got lucky with Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers and he's still a dumb guy who has been lucky having Dak Prescott and that defense, just not as lucky because the 2006-2018 Packers > 2020-2021 Cowboys in talent. It is abundantly clear to everyone but Jerruh. Aaron Rodgers hated him for a reason.
  17. Yep. Almost three minutes with three timeouts and the two minute warning. Dak could have quarterback sneaked his way down the field with that much time.
  18. We all knew how it was going to go, yet we still watched it to the very end. And Jerry still made money. The end. See you next year, same time, same message board.
  19. Same old Cowboys. Stop them on 3rd down and save the drive with a defensive penalty.
  20. McCarthy is a goddam idiot. The Cardinals did that to him two weeks ago so he decided he was going to try it and he absolutely fucked it up. What an idiot.
  21. I wanted so bad to be wrong with my cynicism but... welp. This is exactly what I was thinking was going to happen.
  22. I don't know this Good Sam actress but I'd like to.
