  1. If you just want an off the shelf .223 AR, $1200 will get you a lot of gun, probably more than you "need" if this is your first one. Something like this wouldn't be a horrible choice: https://grabagun.com/firearms/rifles/ar-15-rifles-ar-10-ak47/s-w-m-p15-sptii-556n-or-30rd-blk.html Go to Grabagun or Bud's or PSA and do a search and make a list and then come back here and share. Problem is that inventory of the entry-level guns is very short right now because of demand during the lockdown.
  2. My 8th grader is getting into football and sports and lifting weights and wants to get bigger. I might suggest hay bales as an alternative workout.
  3. I'm staying out of the politics, but I will say that as much as I hate losing to those guys, I have massive respect for Gundy and the success he has had there and I love Eskimo Joes and SG Ammo and everything else in Stillwater. Gundy seems to be a good person and (differences in politics notwithstanding) cares about his players. As long as the university stays behind him, he should be able to keep his head down ride this out and the university would be absolutely stupid to dump him unless and until the pressure gets to be too much, which I think isn't going to happen provided he's smart and goes into an underground bunker until August camp starts.
  4. Yeah, totally agree on that. I guess the good news is that all the other birds in that tractor were still alive and fine the next morning and the raccoon(s) never got into the roost itself. I've had my share of coon massacres where you go out there in the morning and dead chicken parts are everywhere. Pretty clear this little 5 week old chick was the only one it (they) could get to for whatever reason.
  5. Lost the little yellow chick on Sunday night. Dead body was in the coop with the head pulled off, which makes me think a raccoon got him through the steel mesh and could only get the head since it was still small enough to fit. I'm curious why he wasn't roosting up inside with the other birds, but maybe he didn't know better and his mom didn't know he was gone. My 13 YO was pretty broken up about it after we found the body. That chick was was growing a comb pretty rapidly and appeared to be a leghorn/orpington cross cockerel. Ironically, the other chick had injured herself over the weekend and had a bloody scratch on her head, so she got moved into the brooder box to heal and avoid the risk of getting pecked. This probably saved her because I'd think she would have been with the other chick on the ground when the same raccoon came by that night. Circle of life and everything...
  6. Ok. Fair point. He should have just said that to begin with instead of making excuses.
  7. I have a safety fence around mine is the difference.
  8. Are we talking about the dead wife or someone else?
  9. There is a very strong correlation between bad neighbors and renters, especially in middle class single family neighborhoods.
  10. Actually not a bad idea at all. Just pop off the pickets on my side.
  11. Every young professional who works in downtown Houston should live in Midtown if they can afford it. It's walkable and as close as you can get in Houston to some other urban place like Chicago or New York, which I know still isn't close at all, but more young + single oriented than anywhere else in Houston. My wife and I both started in Midtown when we were single and have progressively moved further and further out over the years as jobs and family have progressed. Midtown is nowhere to raise a family, but it's great for young people.
  12. Rather than start a new thread, I'll resurrect this one. Bought our house in Sugar Land 6 years ago. Original neighbors on both sides were great. Both families have since moved out and the new ones aren't as great. Last November a storm come through that blew over my backyard fence on both sides. Fence was almost 30 years old and original with the subdivision. It was already rickety and we knew it was about to die. Dog kept getting out of the yard and the fence needed to be replaced, so I just went ahead and hired someone and took care of it and then asked both neighbors to pay back their share to me. Motherfuckers on the north side - who knocked on our door to complain about it the day it happened and literally said, "It needs to be fixed" - have yet to pay us a dime. Said for a while they were going to, now they don't say anything. Motherfucker on the south side - who has pled poverty for the past six months because his Navy reserve situation makes his employment unpredictable - bought a brand new pickup in April and then construction started a week ago on this (gunnite trucks are in front of my house this morning): I am of the mind to go find a bunch of wood waste somewhere in the neighborhood and throw it into that fucking hole tonight after it gets dark. We are about to start construction on a house on our farm where the neighbors are far away and polite. I can't wait to get out of this neighborhood.
  13. I bet Bama and Clemson aren't putting up with this kind of shit, at least from the football players themselves. (I know all about Hopkins and Watson and Clemson etc etc)
  14. In theory, that's one part of what the range officer is for: keeping an eye on everyone and sniffing out trouble. Unfortunately, it just not something that can be controlled. If someone wants to misuse his firearm, he's going to do it, at least for a few seconds. I shoot my pistols at Texas Gun Club in Stafford. The clientele seems to be a little bit above average, but I also try not to go when it's too busy (weekends, evenings) precisely to avoid the crowds and the idiots. I also have a membership so that allows me to shoot on the member lanes which also have fewer meatheads and idiots. It's also why I like GHSC compared to the public ranges. Nothing but a bunch of rich guys shooting shotguns. No handguns, no rifles, and very expensive, relatively speaking, so also fewer meatheads and idiots.
  15. I would not be opposed to that thread. I've learned a lot in here, but would appreciate knowing more on that specific subject.
  16. Yeah, get a dog and mount a flashlight on a an air pistol and wave it around when he bad guy gets there. It might scare him off and it would be safer than a real gun without proper training.
  17. I've always wanted to shoot a pig with my 45-70 Govt. Never had the opportunity yet because I always seem to chose choose my AR-10 308.
  18. My wife would have waited until we were in bed with the lights off for the night before saying, "So.... tell me more about how much you paid for those guns."
  19. I have a S&W 686 in 357 Mag which is fun to shoot. Like all 357 guns, also shoots 38 special which is usually more pleasant at the range. Very good heavy solid stainless DA revolver for a decent price. Also have a S&W 617 in 22LR. 10 shots. That's what I carry in the glovebox of my Mule at the farm, loaded with snakeshot. I've never done much plinking with it but since it's built on the same frame and (I think) has same trigger as the 686, it would be much cheaper for practice if I wanted to go that way. (ignoring recoil of course)
  20. If all you want is the meat, you could just do what I do and tell someone else to go shoot an extra deer in return for you paying for the processing costs. That way you avoid the waking up early and freezing your balls off part and your buddy (i.e. my little brother) gets to shoot another one without the expense while you get your freezer stocked. But if you're looking for an excuse to acquire a new gun, well then godspeed sir and good luck.
  21. Goddamit I fell for this and googled it. I'm an idiot. FWIW, I think the second one looks more like a cottonmouth than the first one.
