  4. My wife got us a daytime babysitter a few Sundays ago and we went to Revelers Hall. They have a New Orleans style house band that plays from 2 - 5 every Saturday and Sunday, and they were badass. Drinks were very good, bartenders were very nice, and were happy to have us there. They don't serve food (only some bar chex mix), so eat before you go, but we loved it. One of those things you didn't know existed in Dallas (granted we've only been here a couple years so y'all might not be surprised). Anyway, highly recommend. Thanks for the insights. VIP is the only way I'd do it. Easily justifiable since I'm not buying the usual 2nd ticket for my wife, my son gets in free, 2 drinks included, and I'm hoping the "VIP area" might have some shade or something that will help with the little guy. I'm still planning to wait and get some indication of what the weather looks like as well as UT game time before pulling the trigger.

Has anybody ever attended this? https://www.prekindle.com/event/45957-smoked-dallas-dallas If so, is the BBQ on par with what you get from visiting these places, or a bit dumbed down for the masses? I'll be on solo parenting duty with my 18 month old son. Thinking about buying a VIP ticket and introducing him to the meat sweats (mostly kidding). Would be nice if they'd post the Okie Lite gametime Some pretty heavy hitters in the lineup: BBQ ON THE BRAZOS (CRESSON) BLACK’S BARBECUE (LOCKHART) BODACIOUS BBQ MOBBERLY (LONGVIEW) CATTLEACK BARBEQUE (DALLAS) EVIE MAE’S PIT BARBEQUE (WOLFFORTH) FERRIS WHEELER’S (DALLAS) HEIM BARBECUE (FT. WORTH) HURTADO BARBECUE (ARLINGTON) HUTCHINS BBQ (MCKINNEY) KREUZ MARKET (LOCKHART) LOCKHART SMOKEHOUSE (DALLAS) LOUIE MUELLER BARBECUE (TAYLOR) MEAT CHURCH (WAXAHACHIE) MICKLETHWAIT CRAFT MEATS (AUSTIN) PANTHER CITY BBQ (FT. WORTH) ROEGELS BARBECUE CO. (HOUSTON) SCHMIDT FAMILY BARBECUE (BEE CAVE) SMOKE SESSIONS BARBECUE (ROYSE CITY) TEJAS CHOCOLATE & BBQ (TOMBALL) ZAVALA’S BARBECUE (GRAND PRAIRIE) ALSO FEATURING CAFE MOMENTUM (DALLAS) EMPORIUM PIES (DALLAS)
  7. Puglia is pretty much what we have decided on. Will read back through this thread and do some research to plan our road trip. As mentioned, our final night will be in Rome. I know I need to go back through this thread, but best restaurant for final dinner? Would probably prefer a lesser known hole in the wall, but can also go big if that's where the best food takes us.
  8. If you want a walking tour you'll have to pick a neighborhood. We did a food centric one in Chinatown when my Mom was in town, which was quite enjoyable. I'm sure you can google any specific neighborhood/walking tour and find plenty of options. As others have said, not a bad idea to do the bus thing to figure out what areas really interest you, and then focus on those in the following days. One of my favorite birthdays...the Cote de Boeuf at Minetta Tavern. (Pic is from the interwebs, but it's accurate)
  9. I left griddy and switched to a month to month plan last week. Change happened overnight, so I only got gouged with 1 day of crazy pricing because I wasn't paying attention. I had been with them for just over 6 months, and the savings over that time outweigh what I got hit with. I plan on switching back to them when the temps start subsiding. It's so easy to do.

  11. So I was pretty much swayed by your beach suggestion, but then I took a look at average temperatures for October. Seems we should expect highs in the 70s, which sounds a bit cold to be swimming in the ocean.
  12. As mentioned, we will basically have 5 nights. What 2 or 3 places would you put highest on your Sardinia list?
  13. The wife and I are going for a wedding in September. We will have a couple nights in Florence before the wedding, so the above posts have been quite helpful. We will be on our own from Sunday, Sept 29th - Saturday, Oct 5 when we fly out of Rome at 7:05 AM (so really we have to be in Rome on Friday, Oct 4th). So, what would you do with about 5 nights and 4 days. The caveat is that my wife studied abroad in Florence many moons ago, so she has been to Como, Amalfi, Florence, Rome. I've been to Rome a couple times and Venice once. I'd like to do something new to both of us, perhaps a little more off the beaten path, but without sacrificing good food, wine, and scenery. Sicily is intriguing to me. There are cheap direct flights from Florence to Catania on the 29th (or a short stop in Rome to fly to Palermo instead). Numerous options to fly to Rome on the 4th. Anybody have Sicily experience? Love or hate? Where would you go with Sunday evening to Friday afternoon on your hands? Sardinia is another option, although it appears we'd have a short layover in Rome. It appears we could also take a ferry from Livorno to Olbia, but the reviews are pretty terrible. Any completely different recs?
  14. We are trying to decide where to stay. It appears the East Market District is the most happening downtown. The Highlands seems close and a cool area. We are 6 adults and a 1.5 year old. Staying in East Market means a hotel. Highlands have a couple cool Airbnbs that would fit all of us. Is one area much more superior than the other? Is downtown very walkable, or are we going to be ubering anyway? Any help here would be appreciated as we're finding it tough to just make a damn decision.
  15. I'd say the bar & terrace at the Stephen F. Austin is what you're looking for. They sell cigars, but I believe you do have to go on the terrace to smoke them. Not a bad thing as long as you're not going in the heat of the day.
  16. Bump. Just booked a trip for early August. I'll be there with my in-laws, which means about 6-8 adults and my son who will be 17 months then. Has anybody done a guided distillery tour they liked? As in pick us all up in a van, take us to a few of the best distilleries, commentary along the way, and perhaps a good meal?
  17. Planning to take my Dad, FIL, and son to the game Sunday. Will be my son's first game. Hoping for decent seats under $100 each. Getting 4 together on stubhub is looking rapey.
  18. Great post. Is nobody going to talk about Ruthie's inability to keep her legs closed? WTF?

  20. Last thing on the garage parking, it goes on a 24 hour cycle. So if you park at 12 PM on Friday, and then leave at 1 PM on Sunday, you'll be charged for 3 days (there might be a small grace period, but not much).
  21. If he's flying out of Love, an Uber from downtown should be more like $15 each way (I would only expect the prices you quoted for rush hour, and even then they seem high). I've never used SpotHero, but a 15 min shuttle is too long. It takes 15 minutes to get from Downtown to Love, so I'm not sure what Hilton it's referring to. All that to say I'd Uber or park in Garage B. Anything else and you're making one of the most convenient airports...less convenient.
  22. Just got back from our trip. Overall it was great. Scenery is stunning, the gondola access from the Marriott Grand Residences was as advertised, walking distance to casinos was cool (we only went once), had great snow, and lift lines were not too bad Saturday and basically non-existent Sunday and Monday. I liked that it felt a bit more like a town than just a tourist ski village, if that makes any sense. First night we went to Azul out of convenience. Was described as California Fresh Mex, and I'd say that's pretty accurate. Food was good, nothing great. I had a jalapeno marg that had a nice spice kick, but seemed very weak in the tequila department. Primo the second night. We got there real early (5 PM) as that was the only time they could seat our party (6 and a baby). We were the only people there so got great attention from the staff from the start, and it continued even when they started to fill up. Starters were nothing special (spinach stuffed mushrooms, sauteed shrimp and calamari, wedge and caesar salads), but the pastas were fantastic. We got rigatoni with vodka sauce (not nearly as creamy as traditional), bolognese that was on special, veal picatta, and chicken parm (my favorite of the bunch). I will caveat that we were all starving after a full day on the slopes, so that always helps. Naked Fish the 3rd night. I thought the food was very good, but the setting was a little cramped for our party. Service started off good, but then tailed off. Still an enjoyable meal. Last dinner was at Artemis Lakefront Cafe (Mediterranean). Enjoyed all the food and a nice Greek white wine. They advertise lake views, but you would really only have those if you sit outside which obviously was a bit on the chilly side. Would recommend for a casual dinner if Med sounds good. I thought the skiing was good. Helped that the snow was pretty great. The lifts/runs were pretty short. Felt like you had to ride 2 lifts and then ski all the way down to have a decently long run. Really enjoyed my time in the trees.
  23. 1912 here, and it's our first house. Second the thorough inspection. Don't know where you're looking, but if it's Dallas I've got a guy. My wife is interior designer so she oversaw a decent amount of work before we moved in, but it was mostly cosmetic. Our only real structural change was knocking down a wall between kitchen and formal dining, and it went very smoothly. Foundation (pier and beam) has been the main thing we've had to keep our eye on. Did some work in the beginning, and I've gone under the house a time or 2 to make sure the shims were still looking solid. Have still had some cracks develop, but nothing major. All that to say I love our house, neighborhood, and location. Very happy with our decision, which came with some apprehension based on warnings from older folks.
  24. I don't know what the Gunter is trying to charge you, but it is not worth "bucking up" anything. I frequent SA for work, and that is the team's last resort when staying downtown. Dated rooms, dirty bathrooms, restaurant always dead. Doubletree Emily Morgan, Hyatt Regency, Westin, and Hilton Palacio Del Rio are all better for similar prices (depending on dates). Agree with the La Cantera recs. If you are interested in something in between those areas the Omni at the Collonade is not a bad hotel. Helpful hint I've heard, if you call and tell them you work for the large insurance company across the freeway you might get a nice rate. If looking for budget near downtown, the Hyatt Place isn't that bad. You're close to Southtown, which is a cool area. Maverick and Battalion are great dinner spots.

Sounds cool. What does the $25 get you? Ability to buy beer and listen to live music? Any food? I understand it's for a good cause, just asking the questions I know I'll get from the wife when I bring it up.
