  1. Have they split Wyoming into twelve states or something equally as insane? That's what they're going to do next time they have a chance, and removing the filibuster gives them a chance much sooner. We're basically saying "we have one party that's insane and will do anything they can to grab power and oppress people", and at the same time we're making it easier for them to do those insane things in the future. Republicans will always beat Democrats at a game of brinksmanship because they are insane, cynical, and don't give a fuck.
  2. The conversation the entire time has been about the filibuster. I support HR1 fully, as anyone who isn't a piece of shit should.
  3. The number one risk factor for Covid death is catching Covid. And yet here a certain 5-6 of you are, constantly harping on obesity while the politicians you vote for actively encourage our citizens to do things that put them in danger of catching the virus. Every single person on this thread knows that the obesity thing is a deflection from other conversations that a certain subset of people don't want to have. We all know the country is fat. That doesn't change that we fucked up our Coronavirus response terribly and killed people that didn't need to die.
  4. We're not talking about HR1. We're talking about the filibuster.
  5. Yep. It will force Republicans to put skin in the game and not just obstruct everything for the sake of obstructing on their way out the door to the Hamptons.
  6. Like I said above, if they could structure HR1 so that's the case, then I'm all for nuking the filibuster and passing it. But I don't think that's a realistic take. Even if the democrats didn't constantly shoot themselves in the dick, conservatism always finds a way back in our country. We don't even know that PR would vote blue.
  7. He is. Perpetual escalating rubberbanding is worse than incremental change. Neither are ideal. But the rubberbanding will do nothing but exacerbate the death spiral.
  8. My take on the filibuster is identical to Bernie's. Brad and Bernie Sanders, centrist trolls.
  9. Imagine thinking that doing something that gives Republicans literal carte blanche to do anything they want next time they have the three branches of government is smart. "We've been losing the gunfights for years, let's turn it into a grenade launcher fight!" Instant gratification world. Too much social media and too many parents that don't tell their kids no.
  10. The politicization is the problem. The only time I've ever seen anyone lament our obesity problem on this board is when they feel like their politicians are being attacked for their Covid response. It's a scapegoat, not something that anyone truly gives a shit about.
  11. BTW, my point is actually that I agree that obesity and public health is a major problem. The problem is that there is one political party actively fighting any measures to try to help it. Obamacare had funding to prevent childhood obesity. Trump overturned the healthy school lunches work that Michelle Obama did. If you guys were serious about it, you'd demand better from your politicians. But you're not actually serious about it as a national problem, you just like using it to deflect and distract from the terrible job our country(#bothsides) has done re:Covid.
  12. "FAT PEOPLE ARE THE PROBLEM WITH COVID" "Remember when the guy you voted for repealed laws meant to fight childhood obesity and teach better eating habits?" "LET'S NOT TALK ABOUT FAT PEOPLE ANYMORE"
  13. Covid is actually incredibly complex so arguing about obesity is a distraction from the overall problem.
  14. "The other day I toilet papered and burned down a house" "You burned down a house?!" "Dumbass, what was the other thing I said right before 'burned down a house!?' - that's what's important here!!"
  15. There's a lot of blame to go around. A lot of it is on parents. The corrupt FDA and the corrupt agricultural industry promoting incredibly poor eating habits like the original food pyramid. A lot of it on politicians. Some of it on weak food labeling laws. Some of it on the eating habits they learn in school. We're supposed to care about the health of society and its children all of the time, not just when it's politically expedient to do so.
  16. Where in our discussion have you specified that you're advocating for the standing filibuster rather than full repeal? Show me, ye bastion of honesty and totally not shifting the argument when you say stupid shit!
  17. With another moderate, sure. I don't even like Sinema. But I also don't like doing stupid impulsive shit that's counterproductive in the long-term just to make the Hugo's and bt's of the world feel good for a little bit.
  18. "Donald Trump supports the ending of the filibuster. So you should be a little bit nervous if Donald Trump supports it. Whether you’re in the majority or the minority, I think you have to protect minority rights. I don’t think you can just simply shove everything through. There’s an argument for that, by the way, but that’s not where I am right now." Quick, b_t - what stupid idiot shitlib said this?!
  19. Back at where we started? What? No we're not back where we started. We now have a Republican leadership that can do whatever it wants because there's no filibuster anymore. If you repeal the filibuster it needs to be done in such a way that you have legislation lined up to ensure that the Republican party as it exists today literally never holds power again. And that's not possible today.
