  1. That's a pretty terrible "analysis" by the guy who posted it. Literally controls for no variables.. just "one country with more mask usage had worse outcomes than another with less mask usage". Sweden has a very young, homogenous population who largely live one-person to an individual housing unit. The UK is the opposite of that. You'd have to look at studies where proper controls and weightings were used, and there are plenty of those showing that mask usage works. Of course it's not 100% and of course wearing them properly and wearing better masks will move those numbers around. Or you could just look at flu cases this current flu season.
  2. I have no idea what conversation you think you're having. At best the ability to depreciate assets makes my point for me and at worst you're not even having the same conversation the rest of us are.
  3. So you're essentially saying inflate away the wealth by printing money and then creating programs for the underclasses? I'm fine with that (though I have some concerns about it hurting the middle class the most). Let's do that too. Let's do it all. We have to fix wealth inequality or it will be the end of our democracy.
  4. It does, sure, but not at nearly the multiple that profit does.
  5. That's the point. A wealth tax would encourage that instead of profit-taking. You're going to have to think about it independently because I don't know that I can explain it any more clearly.
  6. I don't disagree with any of this but saying we can't do something because it's difficult is pretty wimpy. And I can guarantee you that the stupid people who vote against their own interests because they've been conditioned to believe billionaires are their betters would scream even louder about a forced government dilution than they would a wealth tax.
  7. Personal wealth, Lobo. If a private company makes $1mm in profit and reinvests it in wages, that $1mm is no longer $1mm of personal wealth for the owners. If a public company makes $1mm in profit, that's all going to end up as personal wealth for shareholders. You seem unable to separate personal wealth from corporate health. Which is a good example of how the super-wealthy have successfully gaslit you and a third or so of the country into being their unwitting pawns. But keep fucking that trickle-down economics chicken. It's done a fantastic job of destroying the middle class and creating higher wealth inequality than was had in the gilded age. I'm sure some day it'll all come trickling down!
  8. What a stupid post. Where do you get your economics from? This is straight up Fox News gaslighting nonsense. - This wouldn't incentivize companies to go public. The private owners would have a much harder time hiding their worth and folding it back into the business to keep their personal worth below $50mm after an IPO. The point of an IPO is to convert theoretical business wealth into real personal wealth. When they IPO the large shareholders (the original owners) are now on record for exactly what their stock is worth, where it's much easier to depress the company value when it's private. - You think that a personal wealth tax would discourage companies to re-invest profit back into the company by way of hires, salary, benefits, and infrastructure? You actually think that? It would literally do the exact opposite. Instead of shareholders draining companies dry to maximize their personal wealth, this would incentivize reinvestment into the company. This is beyond basic. Stick to your core competencies Lobo. Because your take on this is trash.
  9. Your contention is that this law is going to brutalize the salt of the earth types worth only $49 million because they'll have to put out extra effort to evade their taxes?
  10. Yes, a family worth $50mm in 25 years will be doing just fine. Apparently people who have been making the same minumum wage for twelve years are doing just fine, so maybe the businesses should just suck it up and pull themselves up by the bootstraps.
  11. If they get hit by the tax every year, that means the company has maintained a value of >$50 million and it's doing just fine. They'll be fine.
  12. lmao. I don't care which party it is, a bunch of government bureaucrats getting mistakenly anal swabbed is always going to be funny.
  13. Great. That's even more money that will move from the hoard piles of the uber-rich into the middle class, who will inject it into the economy at a much higher rate than the super wealthy.
  14. Fair, you're right. $50 million is still a shit ton, and taxing them $1 million of it isn't going to ruin their family's generational wealth.
  15. What Serak said. He paid her off. But I dont really want to spend a bunch of time rehashing this and dragging a dead guy. I was just commenting on the logo thing.
  16. lol it's such a ridiculous take I just scrolled past it and laughed. Taking fractional percentages of hoarded wealth from the one half of one percent of the uber-wealthy that are black is ruining the black community. How will LeBron's family make it?!? Just to be perfectly clear, the billionaires can get the guillotine regardless of skin color.

This. Their Trump support is mentioned so they understand why nobody takes their opinion on sexual assault seriously. Adults are talking.
  18. The play where Lonnie sort of stood there and waited for the rebound to bounce to him while the Nets player just came in and scooped and scored was jaw-droppingly terrible. This game has all of the things about this Spurs team that suck balls. Patty doing stupid shit, Lonnie being a low-effort mental midget, Aldridge being a slow-motion turnstile on defense, and Trey Lyles. Shitty.
  19. The fact that a large portion of our country thinks that taxing multi-billionaires very tiny little fractions of their wealth is "punitive" is a testament to how the rich have gaslighted about 30% of the country into carrying water for them. I don't blame or resent you for falling for it. If they weren't good at exploiting people, they wouldn't be billionaires.
  20. Fuck man, I love Patty, but it's time to move on. We can do better with those minutes than one of the biggest defensive liabilities in the league who has become sloppy with the ball and is a wildly inconsistent shooter. He's a huge negative at this point.
  21. I know I'm a page behind here but I'm glad I'm not the only one that finds the ascension of Kobe to sainthood over the past few years pretty gross. The guy is not a very good person. Surely we can do better for the logo. I'd be fine with LeBron or something. But politics do come into play with LeBron and I do see how Kobe has bipartisan appeal being both a person of color and a sexual predator.
  22. My only question about this game is which team @ztejas is rooting for but I guess with Durant out it's the Spurs.

Yep. Ridiculous that they've been allowed to fling political shit all over every other board without consequences, shitting up half of the threads on the whole fucking site. All because they don't want to interact with too many liberals or whatever. If there's any place on Earth where a bunch of fragile terrified white men shouldn't be coddled and babied like the whiny little bitches they are, it's Surly. And yet, even here they're given their safe spaces and their own entire set of rules while they muck up the other 90% of the site with nonsense.
