  1. The vacation house was an exaggeration, but if I can go somewhere warm for a couple of g's when this happens every 5-10 years I'm still coming out ahead. I don't think you can get a whole home generator that powers everything plus install for $10k. I'm looking at a lot more than that for my house that has two heating units, a septic pump, a well pump, and a bunch of other shit. I'm not at all shitting on those of you who are going to ensure your house stays on fully during the entire thing. I think it's fucking awesome. I'm just looking at the cost benefit for my own family.
  2. Yeah, this is sort of where I'm at. I'll spend a few grand to make our house survivable for a week or so. But if I'm spending enough money on generators and whatnot to buy a vacation house, Imma just buy a vacation house and bail out to it next time this is in the forecast. There's a cost/benefit line and I think it starts to get crossed when we talk about whole-home generators and 1,000 gallon underground propane tanks. But I'm probably not as much of a doomsday guy as most.
  3. I really wish the media and the PR folks for these companies would put their severe illness numbers forward more prominently. If we knew that both the 1 and 2 shot regimens are 99% against severe illness then that's even more of a game changer than what we're already learning. I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't really give a shit if I get Covid and have the sniffles for a few days. I just don't want me or my wife to end up in the hospital or worse.
  4. I'm going to wait til summer because all this stuff is going to be overpriced and scarce for a few months. Will also give me time to research and plan. We didn't lose power but the "what if we had" game has kept me up at night. But back of napkin plan: - keep at least half a cord of wood on hand every winter starting Octoberish. - figure out how to get water to the house if the well pump fails. Some sort of manual pump. - small propane generator that will tap into the tank for the pool. Enough to run a space heater in the master suite and a few electronics. - maybe a couple of those indoor heaters that run off of camping propane tanks and a bunch of those tanks in the back of a garage cabinet. - something to stop outdoor spigots from freezing. Heat tape or heat misers. TBD. - some good cold weather thermal clothes for the kids. We'll never use it, but it's cheap peace of mind.
  5. I'm cutting my system off at the tank in the garage (so after the water softener, before house and hot water heater) and opening up spigots to drain the system the next two nights. Got away with one busted pipe with no damage except a hole in my office closet drywall and a wet floor. Got enough water for drinking and brushing teeth in the RO system under the kitchen sink. Not going to tempt fate again.
  6. Maybe the second shot gives you longer term protection? I dunno. One of the docs or Ana might know more there.
  7. Wife sent me out for a few groceries yesterday, cheese being one of them. All I could find was Rico cheese in a can. 2021 blizzard chili cheese ballpark naoch. Forgive me for the hoity toity actual plate. Ran out of proper paper china.
  8. We took my kid to that animal place in Johnson City for his birthday as a Covid safe celebration. Instead of doing a hayride or whatever like normal, you took your own vehicle through. One of the sheep kept headbutting my mirror and some other antlered son of a bitch put a 6 inch scratch down the side of my truck. Hope those two had to sleep in the cold and think about what they did. The zebra pic in MBU's tweet is pretty generous. If someone did an Instagram vs. reality side by side, that picture would be instagram and this would be reality: That is one ugly stinky-breathed bastard.
  9. That sucks. If anyone is hard up enough for water to drive to New Braunfels hit me up. Got basically infinite well water. Fill up whatever you need. Not as good as Austin water but after the water softener it's decent enough. Anyone, even if you've called me the dumbest motherfucker on the site at any point or vice versa.
  10. You and me are diamond handsing "normal by memorial day" all the way.
  11. Whenever someone's argument boils down to "well LA sucks too" you know you're dealing with political hackery that's not worth your breath. "While there are 48 other states that have managed not to endanger their citizens' lives multiple times in a decade due to poor planning and greed, LA is bad too so that excuses everything and we're fine lol" It's like this amulet of protection that allows them to never have to acknowledge things that cause them feelings of confusion like their politicians fucking them over time and time again. "We're only second worst out of 48!". American exceptionalism at its finest. I blame participation trophies for the shift towards celebrating mediocrity.
  12. That's not true. It's just that efforts to provide children with and teach better nutrition keep getting repealed by one of our two parties because reasons.
  13. Some good news for a change. This means that you can basically operate as "fully vaccinated" three weeks after your first shot. https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/coronavirus/canadian-researchers-say-pfizer-vaccine-s-second-dose-can-be-delayed-as-first-is-highly-effective-1.5313926 The second dose of Pfizer Inc's COVID-19 vaccine could be delayed in order to cover all priority groups as the first one is highly protective, two Canada-based researchers said in a letter published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The vaccine had an efficacy of 92.6% after the first dose, Danuta Skowronski and Gaston De Serres said, based on an analysis of the documents submitted by the drugmaker to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These findings were similar to the first-dose efficacy of 92.1% reported for Moderna Inc's mRNA-1273 vaccine, according to the letter on Wednesday.
  14. Mine that was frozen busted a leak yesterday when it thawed out, so my recommendation is to burn down your house and use the insurance money to move to the Caribbean away from this wintery hellhole.
  15. My entire driveway was clear and dry 30 minutes ago, now I can't see it.
  16. I hope you get your power on and ya'll are able to warm up and enjoy the weekend.
  17. Dallas probably built infrastructure and charged it on their AMEX. If you wait long enough ya'll's shit will get repoed or you'll lose it in a divorce.
  18. - Ice and snow knocked out a bunch of COA equipment and they can't get trucks there to fix it - The state of Texas and ERCOT, despite knowing about the risk profile of our electric grid for years, failed to prepare for it and willingly and knowingly sacrificed you and your family's wellbeing and safety so that wealthy energy men could buy beach houses. "Which one should I be mad at? Definitely the first one!"
  19. You're really putting some effort into trying to make this "it's definitely COA's fault that we have statewide energy shortages created by a lack of regulation and a refusal to tie in to a national grid by state politicians and ERCOT" thing happen. Your commitment is admirable.
  20. It's snowing in 78132. Never thought I'd ever get to the point where I'm like "it's snowing again in Texas. Fuck", but here we are. Even my two year old who thought the big snow earlier this week was the best thing of his life was like "it's snowing" then went back to the couch to watch Paw Patrol.
  21. Yep. The taxpayers will send some welfare money to the energy producers to make repairs and invest in infrastructure so this doesn't happen again. The energy producers will put pool noodles around their pipes and give the C suite and the board seven figure bonuses. As is tradition.
  22. Almost as terrible as the uniforms Miami is wearing.
  23. Seems like this afternoon is the best opportunity to make a run to the store between now and Saturday or Sunday. I already know the HEB here is an absolute shit show. Wonder what my best option is. Gas stations and a Dollar General fairly close maybe.
