  1. The guy who booked those shows is now partnering with Steve Wertheimer and doing five days of shows inside and in the parking lot at C-Boys. The acts will be named this week, I think.
  2. He had Jason Victor and Steve Wynn last year for a quick evening show at the gallery. I think he had one or two similarly brief events but nothing like the alley shows when they were downtown.
  3. Jimmy Smits' death scene was so much like my father's last moments that I lost it while watching it and was haunted for a long time after. It's the kind of acting you don't expect to see, perfect and tragic and close.
  4. I love Die Spitz! I saw them b/c there is a connection with the Hickoids and I know them very well. Die Spitz is just fantastic, look like they are well on their way to being whatever they'd like to be, and you should be damned proud!
  5. My personal favorite. After toiling for 15 years in near-anonymity, May 1995 brought a real hit for Pulp in Common People. It got lots of radio airplay in England but it came at a time when Pulp wasn't touring. At the last minute - almost literally - they replaced the Stone Roses as headlining act at the Glastonbury festival because of a broken collarbone suffered the day before. As Jarvis Cocker relayed later, "The thing that changed things for Pulp was that ‘Common People’ was a big hit – that had happened in May, and we played Glastonbury in June. So, I think it was the first show we’d done since we had become popular… and it was quite a moment because everybody sang along, and you realized that you’d crossed over into a different kind of world." You can see the moment when they defined the '90s and Britpop. You can see the terror in their eyes as the lights illuminate the huge crowd, by far the largest they'd ever played for, and the raucous reaction they hadn't expected. The tempo gets faster and threatens to careen out of control but it's reined in masterfully just before the final explosion of joy. It's an incredible performance, a remarkable moment in time captured on video. Enjoy.
  6. Jaimee Harris is starting to blow up nationwide. She's an absolute must-see whenever she's back in town, but she's touring the US and Europe a lot right now.
  7. If you aren't familiar with Mike McCoy, check him out. He's always got a fistful of bands going, like the Service Industry, the American People, Tontine and his current collective, Trompe l'Oeil, who just guested on KUTX last week.
  8. So much great Austin music in this thread. I've been away for a while but it's nice to come back and see all of this. Here's another one.
  9. Crank it up, fellow Austin olds. Bob Mould is at Mohawk April 3 and Robin Trower is at the Moody April 24.
  10. My daughter is going to go to school in Florence, starting this October. I'll be visiting her for a couple of weeks around Thanksgiving because she'd like for me to cook what I can of a traditional Thanksgiving dinner for her. Do any of you have any tips for her living there - the day to day stuff that she'll need to figure out, and tips for me when I visit her? All I know is it's great for leather goods, and since I'm less stylish than a rusty Yugo I'm going to be embarrassingly out of step over there. Thanks in advance.
  11. You stop me again whilst I'm walking, and I'll cut your fucking Jacobs off.
  12. We went to a lot of similar shows. How do you choose The Best? Is '81 Rolling Stones in the Astrodome better than '97 Stones in an arena? Ray Charles with an orchestra and the Raelettes or Tom Waits with a horn player and a guy on upright bass? Is the whirling dance of Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens better than Warren Zevon or Patti Smith or the Ramones in '78? Crazy Horse in Red Rocks or Muddy Waters at Antone's? There's literally dozens more. I don't see how anyone can pick The Best show they've ever been to, just keep going to great ones and loving the experiences. Well, that time Joe Ely opened for the Clash at the Armadillo was pretty cool.
  13. Sirius channel 94 - Comedy Greats - is sprinkling Garry Shandling content throughout the day for at least the rest of March. There are remembrances, standups and interviews. This morning I heard a great interview when he was on Marc Maron's WTF.
  14. First concert was Arlo Guthrie in 1973. I was 13. First rock concert was Bachman-Turner Overdrive in 1974, just as Takin' Care of Business was on the charts. After that I was off to the races, as many shows as I could possibly go to.
  15. If you order the dinner, it comes out on a different type of plate with sides you don't want. Just get the enchiladas with jalapenos, onions, and two eggs on top, with bread instead of tortillas. A side of fries if you're feeling lucky.
