  1. You would think a commutation of his sentence would have been enough but he’s been excused for his crimes instead. Interesting.
  2. Never hurts to have open conversations with your parent if they remarry. Flat out ask them what are they doing and make sure they know there are options where they can take care of everyone. Leave X amount to the new spouse and X amount to own kids. Not to mention options for incomes for life and the ability to stay in the house for their life. Some may think the old person doesn't want to talk about it, but often they actually do. Of course there's always drama, and accusations of personal items disappearing or whatever. And if dementia gets in the middle, it can become a mess. I would recommend getting a family lawyer involved who can nudge the kid that something weird happened with the will.
  3. There's a large Boy Scouts office near my neighborhood. It might be an admin office for the Houston area or something. Anyway I noticed that their giant American flag was still at half staff yesterday. I will take their word over flag rules more than Greg Abbott.
  4. so, new 2025 savings goal?
  5. The fact that the reform cartoon/claymation video (narrated by one Keanu Reeves as the building) was all about them personally lends itself that Lumon reformed nothing except trying to get them back in line. It is fairly obvious that his newspaper headline of the 4 was fake since its their group photo from Helly's first days, superimposed onto a picture from an Eisenhower ticker tape parade, that the internet has identified. I don't think Mark was back at the office the next morning since it would have taken a minute to come up with a plan and produce the video. As for Helly being Helena or not, there is a scenario where they want Helly there but they've promised her something else. Even if that's a lie. I'm still thinking it's not her but see the other as a possibility.
  6. Doc has had me on BP meds for over a year now. I was around 135-80 or slightly above. He first recommended better diet, more exercise, meditation, etc. and I was all about give me the meds. Lately I've decided to follow his initial advice and actively manage my health. Eating better, running more, even consistently following along to a few youtube yoga videos. Now I'm sleeping better and my BP is lower than the meds alone were taking it. I'm hoping that if I can keep this up, maybe I get off the meds in my Fall checkup. High blood pressure is important to get in check. So many bad outcomes down the line.
  7. several key crypto news items on cnbc.com this morning SEC launching a task force to clarify crypto regulatory framework. I like seeing this on the first morning of the new admin. Next, let's see how fast they move. BoA says financial industry will embrace crypto payments if the feds allow it
  8. I'm burning through my 2025 goal (started in late 2024) to bump up my cash savings to account for inflation and secondly getting closer to a savings goal of paying cash/trade-in for my next car. I had hoped to wrap this up before May but it might be doable by March. I need to think how to reward myself after doing this. Not planning to buy said vehicle in March. This is more likely a 2026 buy.
  9. Memorable day from my young childhood.
  10. Hopefully no one should get mad or triggered about renaming the Gulf. Instead laugh about it. Point out how childish it is to rename something like this. i think Houston should rename all freeways to Houston Freeway as opposed to how we currently name it in where it goes outside of Houston. Houston is more important. The Katy Freeway should now be called the Houston Freeway. Gulf freeway? Nope, that is also the Houston freeway. NW freeway is how the Houston Freeway or perhaps SE Freeway since it’s SE to Houston.
  11. I know a handful of guys from Pittsburgh and they do their best to wear tshirt and shorts 365. But even the ones I know wouldn’t wear shorts in 20 degree weather like fetterman does. They would break out sweat pants and maybe jeans. Fetterman is just a weird guy and his clothes are one of the signs
  12. Fell asleep early last night and woke up to a perhaps the most snow I’ve seen in Houston on the ground. And I’ve been here 30+ years.
  13. Presidents often are saddled with problems that are from the previous administration or external forces, but they can still be judged on how well they handled the crisis. In my opinion, Biden deprioritized battling the inflation and contributed to it. The opposite argument could be that he was trying to save the economy from COVID but inflation, or the lack of dealing with it, is on his watch. And I don't care about arguments that are, "but Trump..." I give Biden A+ on many other areas especially in helping to show what a paper tiger Russia is. In the past, the Soviets could put a force almost anywhere in the world and perhaps win. Today they can't beat a much smaller country literally on their doorstep. They're a nobody.
  14. what does that have to do with cryptocurrency? take it to the CR threads.
  15. Unsure where else to post this. The aircraft carrier USS JFK CV-67 is being towed from Philadelphia to Brownsville to be dismantled. Should arrive in 2 weeks if someone wants to see it. I discovered a few years ago that a ship breaking yard in Brownsville has cut up many naval vessels including other carriers. Historic naval aircraft carrier makes final voyage to Texas
  16. If they will have him, Biden should go on 60 minutes this week to provide his justification on his family and govt pardons on the last day. He should go on the record, in his own words, on why this was necessary when a new president has an enemies list and has threatened legal action to punish Biden via his family. Also important to remind Trumpers that Trump also pardoned at least one relative who was 100% guilty of a crime. Talking about Jared's dad.
  17. I'm happy to be at work today and not even slightly tempted to watch over the internet. I figure that I can read the lowlights later tonight. I'm more interested in reading the exec actions tonight.
  18. If he's transferring money from his base to his pockets, I really don't care. His social media company is worth over $8B when it earns less than a single Chick-fil-a location earns. The sooner that we all accept that the Trump family will earn at least 10s of billions over this time, the easier it is. I hate it but it's going to happen.
  19. Many top performers will travel to authoritarian countries to perform 5 songs at the wedding of the dictator's kid. They normally do this very quietly. There is a difference when they do it for an US president who is unpopular with a fair number of the core fan base. However I also bet that many of their fans would agree that they should grab the bag when given the chance. I wouldn't put too much stock in counting on Snoop's ethics. Didn't he used to sing about pimping out whores? And have a famous pimp perform on stage with him. He's only cleaned up his act not changed who he is.
  20. The dangerous precedent is when the incoming president is threatening prosecution even if it never comes to fruition. I dislike that Biden has to issues these pardons not that he did issue them. It's a final act of loyalty to these people who did the best they thought for the country AND legal experts agree that they didn't' break any laws.
  21. Same here. I’ve used the app but rarely.
  22. One of Milchicks roles as asst mgr was to take them into the break room. Which was a good name since it was about breaking them down after they misbehaved. Will that be Ms Huang’s job now, or is the new Lumon not into that behavior now? on the question on how would Helena be taught everyone and everything, the place was crawling with cameras and microphones. In the cartoon, we saw how lumon had recorded basically everything they said or did. As for her being able to perform the macro data refinement, who knows since we don’t understand it. This is a show that is unlikely to answer every mystery.
  23. I feel like Sonos is missing out on the old crowd by selling them on the idea that their sound bars can create clearer vocals for TV shows. Many buy a nice TV then cheap out on a sound bar that is just loud. And while some complain that Sonos doesn’t provide enough HDMI connectors on some of their devices, it makes them less complicated.
  24. For at least the US, college educated women are becoming a larger percentage of high earners so they don’t need to marry to have a great life, financially speaking. Many do want a spouse/children but there is a problem with that due to a combination of their unrealistic expectations of men and many men failing to meet lower, reasonable expectations. Add other elements like becoming used to staying home with COVID and declining alcohol rates, and I bet a fair number of younger people don’t even go out at night much to meet others. At least in comparison to what us old folks did in the 80s-00s. as for declining rates in the rest of the world, no idea.
  25. Forecasts looks to have shifted the colder temps a little sooner in Houston and bumped the low temps up a few degrees. I have a healthy fear of frozen water pipes. What are the downsides of just turning off the water to my house, at the meter, for 36-48 hours during the extreme lows? I can have water stored for drinking, washing and the toilet. I assume some remaining water in the pipes could still freeze but could that still burst the pipe? and in some unexpected case of absolutely needing a hot shower, I could turn the water back on. I live alone so there wouldn’t be anyone in my ear complaining about the lack of running water.
