  1. There could be good reasons why Vance changed his name in adulthood. Perhaps the stepdad was a POS and Vance saw it as an opportunity to get away from that history. I might want to get away from being named after a bad guy. What's keeping us in learning more about Vance is the very fact that he's not giving anyone the opportunity to get to know him. He doesn't seem to do any interviews where he's asked questions about himself, his family or his life. He just gets behind a podium, acts awkward and goes home. And this guy might soon be one McDonalds hamburger away from the Oval Office.
  2. Props to Administration and military in looking to close the 9/11 trials by agreeing to deals with 3 of the 9/11 terrorists. CNN story We're 23 years removed from the tragedy and 21 years since KSM was arrested. Given the torture/interrogation with him, he was never going to have a trial to our standards. I gather he and the others accept guilt of the 3K murders, and we take the death penalty off the table. We might have thrown in some improved prison situation as well. I'm not advocating that we open the doors of the jail but we need closure on the Gitmo detainees. It's not an American value to hold people indefinitely like we've done. I'm sure Biden and Harris will take heat from Trump in that he would have strung KSM up. Of course, he didn't in his 4 years.
  3. Trump and TexAgs will claim that today Biden freed the most evil people since Hitler. Trump would have convinced Putin to accept leftover Best Buy gift cards for the Americans' release.
  4. 2008 made me forget 2000-2002. Bad enough there were back-to-back years of -10% and -13% only for the party take home gift of -23% the next year. Thanks for playing. I can't even fully recall what I did with all of my dot com internet stocks. JDSU made me ton. I believe I ended up dumping everything by the end of the crash. Dumb move as I had a modest amount in Amazon.
  5. It's uncommon for a man to change his last name, at the time of his marriage, to his grandparents name. I doubt anyone is keeping a record of this, but let's go with a conservative number that only 1 person has done this. The only explanation that I can think of is that his wife refused to take his adopted dad's surname. And Vance (Bowman or Hamel) wanted to share a surname with his wife. Her Indian name would be out of the question so they compromised on Vance. Do many people attend a prestigious law school like Yale, only to change their name so former classmates don't make the connection. You have to guess that until he ran for Senate and definitely VP, some of his Ohio State and Yale classmates had no idea that JD Hamel was JD Vance. Isn't a major reason to attend a top tier law school is due to the connections you make?
  6. Vance calling Kamala a phony who changes her persona depending on the situation. Vance is on his 3rd name AND he's spoken about having to change his own persona based on the situation. He's one person at Yale. Someone else in Ohio. And as mentioned many times here, someone can identify which 0, 1 or many races, ethnicities or nationalities. Short of someone faking a connection, everyone has a right to their own life experiences. And honesty, I think people can even choose without a blood connection. It's their life.
  7. Did he actually say this? The video quality gives AI vibes.
  8. I wouldn’t make an offer to eat a hat but if I lost a bet, I would pay a dessert person to make a hat out of chocolate. 5,000 calories later the hat is gone.
  9. "I've never made a racist remark in my life" proceeds to walk the line in making racist comments.
  10. I would love to see a complex monte carlo simulation where you could model zero withdrawals on years the market is negative. Then identify the chances of running out of cash or seeing investments running to zero. Agree that with this strategy that someone could tighten the belt somewhat in down years. Limit or eliminate expensive vacations when this occurs. Like with any financial plan, if you relatively have a large amount in the market and in cash, it will be unlikely to go broke with safe guards like correct insurance and good judgement.
  11. Please do. I don't have a dog in this fight except it looks like the entire city hates this guy.
  12. Really? HISD students were reprimanded when going to the restroom and one student got a urinary tract infection because it? I understand that Miles has pushed out teachers and added new policies but I'm skeptical about this claim. While Miles looks to have pushed many long term educators away, this past year's test results was a big improvement from the previous year. Now perhaps HISD was at rock bottom before Miles and had nowhere to go but up, but HISD shouldn't have been so poorly managed. https://blogs.houstonisd.org/news/2024/06/14/staar-results-show-hisd-is-closing-the-achievement-gap-for-all-grade-levels/
  13. I’m sure that I’ve written here but my retire plan is to have 3 years of expenses in cash at all times. Perhaps minus take-home SS payments assuming I’m confident in it. With this plan, in bad markets I just stop market withdrawals and live off the cash savings. when the market recovers, there would need to be a big withdrawal/sale to replenish the cash savings. The idea is to remain somewhat aggressive with funds, not 100% equity. And allows me to not worry about a short term market downturn. The risk would be a >3 year market crash. However I assume that scenario would be painful for almost any stock owner regardless of the strategy.
  14. Come on. Not find a confederate flag for a Trump rally? I could see a challenge finding a nazi flag but a confederate flag is fish in a barrel. Especially given how so many trump fans love their flags. A venn diagram of Trump flag owners and confederate flag owners must overlap at least 75%.
  15. Christianity used to seem like it strove for inclusivity by building bigger tables but now many churches are about building taller walls.
  16. Great point. Funny how Ohio is making noise that the Dem candidate could be left off the ballot if the Dems don't formally nominate their candidate soon (this weekend?) BUT you know that if Vance drops out, they will quickly pass a law letting the GOP do whatever they want.
  17. There are always administrative costs with fundraising. A hundred for you, and hundred for me. fifty for you, two hundred for me... This type of operation needs at least 5 union workers, 2 union reps, and a handful of no-show jobs that we split with NY. Meadow's boyfriend can earn a few bucks sweeping up the room.
  18. If Harris has any big bumps in the polls, Vance will suddenly have an undisclosed family emergency and ask the public to respect his privacy. Then the RNC will choose another VP candidate. Presumably they need Vance to go along with it and not cause a problem. Some are acting like replacing the VP candidate is a constitutional crisis but parties are allowed to nominate whomever they want. Possibly it could create issues for local election boards, in terms of printing, if he's dropped closer to the election date.
  19. were they the underdog or were the other teams trash talking them? I get that favorites need to seek out bulletin board material but I thought they were the overwhelming favorite.
  20. so awkward. not everyone was meant to run for public office or be in the spotlight.
  21. Trump's current press secretary is in Project 2025 videos. It wouldn't surprise me to find out that a fair number of Team Trump were hired by the Heritage Foundation onto P2025 to give them a decent salary since 2021.
  22. Project 2025 must be polling horribly for Trump to come out against it this much. Of course it's still the playbook, they will just be quiet about it.
  23. https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/education/article/texas-teachers-spend-school-supplies-states-19604960.php?sid=5eb35f0cd14307791d11019c&ss=A&st_rid=2fa7d4dd-6d4f-48a7-81ac-0fdb75dd3d65&utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_term=&utm_campaign=HC_The713 While this is a survey and not backed up with receipts, I'm not surprised that our teachers are shelling out this much because Texas and the ISDs fail to adequately supply the teachers and students. But then they blame those same teachers when the students don't score high enough on an exam.
  24. Vance appears to be following this stupid track that only parents should be able to lead since they have a stake in the future with their children. This tells me that he doesn't have any empathy for others. Google AI definition of sociopath (term Vance has called childless people.)
  25. Brave guy to risk his job. Most likely there is at least 25% of his audience being described, to their face, in terms they won't like to hear. And like with many lectures, those who get offended are the ones who are most guilty.
