  1. I wasn’t describing the trickle down economics.
  2. Yes but the system will eventually adjust. Everyone with incomes already will also see a rise income, followed by a rise in prices, and that livable wage disappears. This doesn’t happen overnight but it does happen. there are livable wage+ job options for almost anyone but some dont want those jobs or for some reason they’re incapable of being trained for other jobs.
  3. I'm reading how Muslim voters and non-Muslims voters are dissatisfied or even pissed with Biden's stance on the Israel-Palestinian war/conflict/genocide/whatever term. And that some are considering Trump to punish Biden and the Dems. Biden needs to start highlighting that Trump has switched to using the word Palestinian as a synonym for terrorist. And if they still want Trump after understanding his position, then they get something other than Biden.
  4. Wasn't long ago that the GOP actually thought it was a good idea to be inclusive and attempt to attract minority groups that were conservative on some issues. Now those groups are called upon to be deported and soon terminated with extreme prejudice. A tweet from a candidate would have made national news and been condemned by national GOP leaders. Now its used to bring out more voters.
  5. Trump must have some evidence that he's in trouble. He's basically starting to bribe people to vote for him. https://www.cnbc.com/2024/06/10/trump-taxes-on-tips-nevada.html Even his campaign had to respond that they know Trump cannot do this without congressional approval but the average voter will not know this. Trump really is the kid running for elementary school class president by promising more recess.
  6. I don't understand how the only check or balance that Congress and the Exec branch have over the Supreme Court appears to be nomination/confirmation and impeachment. The legislature and exec branches can somewhat force each other to find compromise but the judicial appears to have zero checks. And the judicial can effectively order around the Legis and Exec branches. Makes no sense that we give the people with lifetime appointments the ability to police themselves. I assume the ultimate check could be that the Administrative branch could choose to ignore/not enforce the judicial's rulings. That would be a dangerous precedence if we went down that path.
  7. The more that the GOP hurts rural communities the more they vote GOP. There are some masochistic MFers living in small towns.
  8. It's definitely sad when an adult, let's say 30+ year old, only has the skill set to work minimum wage such as fast food. Short of someone having a disability (mental or physical), there are higher paying jobs out there such as house cleaning or manual/yard work. I can understand not wanting to work outside or scrub toilets but we shouldn't "incentivize" someone to effectively work in a go-nowhere job (fast food) for a pay where you squeak by. But I also get pissed when you hear about people working for these large employers, and some are receiving Medicaid or food stamps. When that occurs, the taxpayer is subsidizing McDonalds or WalMart. I don't have a better idea either.
  9. orcas are smart enough to put the blame on sharks.
  10. another plan is offering the best rates but the start date isn't until September. WTF. I like to think that I'm on top of electricity rates but I'm not planning out the switch 90 days in advance.
  11. What's up with some plans requiring you to connect your smart thermostat to the energy provider? Failure to do so or disconnecting that connection will result in higher costs. I can't imagine giving my AC control over to a company that would be tied to ERCOT and the pricing models. One of these providers, Octopus, claim that they won't make your house uncomfortable, and that you can override the temp setting. But if you override too frequently there is a penalty. My bet is that when ERCOT requests lower usage, these types of plans enforce it. In the meantime, I'm floored by how expensive plans are now. I guess we have to pay for those expensive 2021 freeze bills. Thanks Greg.
  12. I struggle on minimum wage levels. I'm not like Johnny Sack, or whatever he changed his name to when he wanted to hide his past replies, where he argued that the minimum wage should be abolished and if someone was willing to work for $1/hr, then so be it. Minimum wage should absolutely exist to prevent an employer from abusing a worker due to lack of choices or ability to understand the worth of their labor. However I'm uncertain that minimum wage should be drastically raised at once to fix previous wrongs like going 10 years without an adjustment. It's 100% criminal that the federal and therefore Texas min wage has been at $7.25 since 2009. WTF. But online inflation calculators tells me that a corresponding hourly wage in 2024 should be $10.60.
  13. He’s one step away from arguing that Hitler wasn’t all bad. Let’s look and his good policies and mimic them.
  14. Shark tracker. Here’s a white shark that went all over the east coast and Florida gulf coast in ‘21-‘23. The site is a good time waster. https://www.ocearch.org/tracker/detail/sable
  15. The Belgian prime minister is resigning tomorrow as right and far right parties have won parliament. Strange times. Putin working overtime to flip Europe.
  16. Don’t know if we have a nonUK Europe thread so why not here. far right groups performed well in the EU elections, and Macron called for snap elections in 3 weeks for the French National Assembly. Very possible that France could have a far right Congress soon. I’m ignorant of the French govt structure but this sounds bad. https://www.cnn.com/europe/live-news/european-election-results-06-09-24-intl/index.html
  17. Weird battle to pick in saying that D-day was a failure. There can always be academic arguments about wars, how they could have been prevented, monday morning quarterbacking of a battle, but why attack d day on its 80th anniversary. Especially on a short interview. he can relatively get away with it since we’re getting down to fewer and fewer voters that have a strong attachment to ww2.
  18. Johnson is an example that lying pays and how his party accepts it. In 2022, with over 2.6m votes cast, Johnson won by 27,000 votes. He probably either doesn’t plan to run again in 2028 or he’s counting on people forgetting.
  19. Is it wrong to hope that Trump ends up like captain queeg on the stand in the Caine mutiny?
  20. Anders died on 7 June 2024, at the age of 90, when his plane crashed into Puget Sound . The plane was witnessed diving into a small channel between the two islands and then sinking after catching fire. Anders' son, Greg, confirmed the crash occurred while his father was flying a aircraft owned by Heritage Flight Museum. Beginning with his Air Force career, Anders had logged at the time of his death over 8,000 flight hours crash caught on camera.
  21. Lost an Apollo astronaut, William Anders, who took the earth rise photo. https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/07/science/apollo-8-astronaut-william-anders-reportedly-killed-in-plane-crash/index.html Wikipedia tells me that we still have 6 Apollo astronauts alive who flew to the moon, including 4 that walked on it. The youngest of the 6 is 88. It would seem fitting that we get back there before we lose the last Apollo astronaut.
  22. ChatGPT - here are analytic results that I want. Create me some evidence. Feel free to play it loose with the facts from sketchy sources including Twitter accounts with single digit follower counts.
  23. PM Rishi left the D-Day ceremonies early so that he could make an interview in London. I mean a press interview not one for his next job later this summer. He’s already apologized for it. forgetting that it’s incredibly disrespectful to all military vets, he had a opportunity for photos with other world leaders in France. Instead he asked David Cameron to step in for the photo ops. As a world leader, who needs votes in an election in 5 weeks, you want to stand next to other world leaders that presumably carry some respect in the UK. It’s like the last couple of conservative PMs are actually double agents for Labour. You can’t make up the constant unforced errors they commit.
  24. These stories are all clear that in some of the findings are based on what Thomas ultimately disclosed when presented with facts. There is really no reason to believe that he hasn’t taken more gifts up to and including cash or other assets. Or gifts that were provided to his wife or other family members.
  25. Either the House or the DOJ should be investigating to determine if there have been criminal actions potentially leading to impeachment proceedings against Thomas. He will refuse to cooperate but who cares. im tired of reading how he claims that other judicial officials told him that he didn’t have to report the gifts. What kind of defense is that?
