  1. Is there a WW2 thread on surly where I can learn more about Quinn Ewers?
  2. You can buy a new 55 gal drum with lid for about $100. It might have some manufacturing oils and solvents remaining, but at least it didn't hold something like benzene at one time.
  3. "illegally and collusively boycott" is certainly a new one. It's illegal to boycott a business? Like InBev (Bud Light), etc.?
  4. Yeah, that was the point of posting it. I didn't think it was current, FFS.
  5. No idea if it's real, don't care:
  6. I almost don't care. If these are "the good old days", then shoot me.
  7. Had an interesting discussion with a former SpaceX engineer today. He says the satellites that fall out of orbit are too small to avoid burning up completely, so there's no actual "debris" hitting the earth (other than a ton or so worth of smoke). Take that for what it's worth, which is exactly what you paid for it. Now, the failed rocket launches, that's a different story, as we've seen.
  8. I just can't even imagine that, but I was very close with my parents, and they were sharp as tacks up until death. An Alzheimer's patient? I'd be calling every day.
  9. It's hard to imagine 3 middle aged kids not checking in on their 95 year old dad with Alzheimer's for over a week. What a sad story.
  10. . . . and one of my points is that (say) $12M isn't the pain, $7M is the pain (assuming a $5M bar to clear). As far as the time spread goes, the better the coach (and ensuing results), the longer it is until CDC comes calling again. I mean, yeah, it ain't my money, but the numbers just don't really seem to add up to me.
  11. I'm sure Congress and the FCC will get right on that.
  12. How would social media be policed? A Russian bot shitposting on Facebook couldn't possibly be held to the (old) Fairness Doctrine standards, could it?
  13. All I know is my 8:30 AM drive to the office sucked balls because I was once again staring straight into the rising sun. Yes, I have sunglasses and a visor. I still almost hit two joggers and a deer. I would have felt really bad for that deer.
  14. Staying in the market is timing the market.
  15. YES, it's upfront. It's a few million dollars. We shit a few million dollars. It would be stupid to let that derail a deal for a coach we deemed "the best". (I don't know if that is the scenario, I'm just talking about the absurdity of the buyout argument.)
  16. No, I'm saying the hit is effectively spread across however many years the coach is employed, and it pales in comparison to $16M-$18M annual.
  17. Let's start with the basic arithmetic: what Gerry is saying is that a $6M buyout is too much but $5M is OK. That's not a $6M hickey, it's a $1M hickey, and in ALL respects it would be "spread" across at a minimum of 3 years, barring a firing for cause, at which point the exit buyout would be a moot point. I don't believe for a moment Texas couldn't figure out a way to spread a few million dollars across a few years. For starters, Moody revenue is a HUGE issue and the best coach maximizes that revenue.
  18. Man, I give Tre MORE credit for fighting through the shitshow that was his team to win the conference scoring title. It's not like he's a one-dimensional player, either.
  19. How does the conference's leading scorer end up 2nd team?
  20. Yup, Smitty's is my other top vibe spot, but unfortunately their food is pretty uniformly bad at this point. And, for me it's a farther drive than LM. Recipe?
  21. On balance, the team is a bit behind their lofty goals of 150+ HR on the season, having hit 22 HR in 15 games to date. Assuming another run to the final game in Omaha (~ 68 game season), that extrapolates to approximately 100 HR for the season. Surely they can make up that 50 HR deficit over the remaining 53 games, as they'll only need to average 2.4 HR per game. This is an ever so slight bump over their current 1.5 HR per game pace. Oh, in conference play. Missed it by "that" much.
  22. That's my go-to. It's almost always delicious. I'm not sure why that doesn't translate to the brisket. And, I put a lot of emphasis on the "ambience", which LM has in spades.
  23. A whole packer weighed 3 lbs post-cook? That would be what, 5 lbs pre-cook? Was it a midget cow? Excuse me, a little cow?
