I ended up getting 6 birds over a couple of days hunting solo with 1 dog and the highlight was definitely on Sunday. Went hunting in the morning and got one bird then decided to watch the chefs game. At halftime I decided to do a quick hunt across the street and ended up bagging 2 birds in 30 minutes before heading back inside to watch the second half. Token pic of the birds and the windbreak where all hell broke loose.

I was out in NWKS at our old family farm for the Pheasant opener 10 days ago. We have a large windbreak right behind the house that I hunt a couple of times a day because it's so close and takes 5 minutes but I rarely see any birds there, at most a single bird. I got in on a Friday night and it had rained all day into Saturday morning which apparently had the birds looking for shelter. When I woke up I made a cup of coffee then walked outside to get my gear ready when I started to hear a couple of cackles coming from behind the house. Sweet! An easy bird to start out the day! I grabbed my shotgun and started creeping around the house to the windbreak where the cackles were coming from. When I got to the woodpile all hell broke loose for about 20 seconds. There were birds flying out of tree tops, birds busting up from the ground, birds running across the road etc etc. Just complete pandemonium, maybe 15-30 birds total and lots of roosters. Guess how many I ended up getting? ZERO. Just complete panic, do I shoot that one, wait there's another, is that a hen or rooster, is that tree in the way, is that one too far now? I think I only shot twice and didn't hit anything.

Yes. We also have a windmill lease on our land, they ended up building the windmills a mile north and a mile south of our land so no actual windmills but they did bury a power line through our land next to the road. Since they didn't build any on our land they gave us an extra "good neighbor" bonus for having to look at them....I don't mind though. As far as I know the only condition is we can't build any structures over a certain height. From looking at neighbors land some of them have windmills and oil wells on the same section so I don't think that would be an issue. Token windmill sunset pic

Thanks for the input, definitely looks like we should be looking for more. My dad's going out there next week to talk to some neighbors etc to see if he can get any details of what is standard out there. For reference its 620 acres of pasture/cropland.

Hello Texas oil barons, it's an old big12 friend here with some questions. Is there something new going on in NW Kansas? My parents have owned the grandparents old place by Colby KS for 5+ years and just had a landman knock on their door in KC inquiring about leasing the land. Basic conditions seem to be $20 an acre upfront for the right to drill for 3 years and then 1/8 of the oil if they find any. Here is the company that would eventually end up with the rights https://www.jfredhambrightinc.com/ Is this a pretty standard lease agreement? We would have an attorney look over it before signing anything but just figured I'd see what the shaggy collective has to say. This map shows a record of every well in KS and while there are none immediately next to our land there are a couple about 2-3 miles away that average around 2k bbls per year. https://maps.kgs.ku.edu/oilgas/index.html

Did you know that Kansas State's offense coordinator Collin Klein was a 2 star WR recruit and started his first collegiate game at QB against Texas in 2010? Collin went 2/4 passing for 9 yards (That was it, no one else threw a pass) and the Kansas State Wildcats won 39-14. Collin Klein went on to beat Texas 2 more times in 11/12 and has as many Big12 Football championships (As a player) as Ricky Williams, Vince Young and Colt McCoy. Collin Klein also has a Big12 Football championship as an OC last year (2022). -

Did you know that Kansas State has as many Big12 football Titles as Texas? Wow, crazy stat when you compare the relative prestige of the hayseed school on the plains to ultra elite rich good smelling smart Texas school. -
Prairie rattler in NW KS while my dad was planting some wheat at the edge of the pasture. This one lived as it was well away from the house. I've seen a couple of rattlers out there but always in the crp or pasture well away from the house/out buildings. Only thing I have seen near the house/buildings are bull snakes.

What are your guys thoughts on CWD (Chronic Wasting Disease, basically mad cow but deer) in deer? I've never deer hunted but my family has some land in NW Kansas where I go pheasant hunting and I see plenty of deer while chasing birds. My concern is that 1/3 deer in that part of KS test positive for CWD and while there has been no transmission to humans yet maybe it takes like 10 years to develop or something. Anyways I'll probably kill a deer at some point but it's not on the top of the priority list. Last year while pheasant hunting I watched 2 bucks fighting in a Milo field long enough for me to walk up almost next to them with a dog...here is the winner.

Also I couldn't stop thinking about Borat every time she talked.

As someone who went on TWO dates with a Ukrainian refugee I'll add my insight. She had a law degree and worked for the government for a couple of years then a western company doing web design or something. Her family left Kiev right after the invasion. Me: So explain the relationship between Russia/Ukraine. You speak both languages, are your countries like cousins or what? Her: Fuck Russia. The only reason I speak Russian is because they made us in school. ....10 minutes later Me: So how did you end up in KC of all places? Her: Well my cousin, who is russian (rolls eyes) lives here so I'm staying with him. He came over when he was 4 so he's alright. Her parents came over too but after it was clear the russians weren't going to take Kiev they went back because according to her dad "I'm going to die one day, if its during a missile strike so be it"

I read In Broad Daylight a couple of years ago and its a great book. Here is his wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_McElroy The TL:DR version is the local town bully/fucktard keeps getting away with crimes due to technicalities/intimidating witnesses. Eventually the townspeople have enough, he goes to the local bar, leaves and is shot with 30-40 witnesses but nobody saw a thing.

Ran into this guy in NW KS last October while walking my mutts through CRP. The mutts didn't even notice it and I walked right by it before hearing the rattle. At first I thought it was some horny grasshopper but it kept rattling so I turned around and found it. ENHANCE

Tyre Nichols beaten to death by 5 Memphis police officers

"Get him some saline" Cops to the medics when they show up, like he just has a slight hangover they need to cure. -
Pretty sure I flushed a mountain lion out of a 60 acre CRP field a couple years ago in NW Kansas while pheasant hunting. I was about 100 yards away from it when I stopped to see if any birds flushed, all I saw was some tall grass parting and a tan back. Then the cat reached a pasture, sprinted across it and right before it hit a new patch of CRP stopped and looked back at me. 50/50 chance it was a large bobcat but if you put a gun to my head and asked me what I saw I would say mountain lion, solid tan color with no spots. We do get some decent sized bobcats out there tho.

As a JOCO/KC resident Its good to have an actual vote on abortion instead of having to vote for a state senator etc who makes the policy. Abortion rights is probably like #6-9 on on list of priorities for me but I think women should have the right to have an abortion. Being a 30 something year old male in JOCO(I live on the Kansas side of KC about 2 miles from the state line) I will say that alot of local females I follow on the gram were blowing up the social media with VOTE NO for the past month or so. I am still shocked that 2/3 of the votes in a primary (not general) election were pro womens rights...IN KANSAS. I think the GOP is the dog who chased a car for years and finally caught the car and realized its alot bigger than they thought.

Tell me about German Shorthaired Pointers

One of my friends husbands grew up with GSP's and when I got mine and was bitching about how much energy they have he said "Don't worry, they calm down around 4 or 5"...My GSP was 1 at the time. 😳 I never had to use a shock collar on my first dog but it is a must IMO with a GSP. The breaking point was when I took her out to to our land in Western KS the first time when she was a year old and she started chasing my uncles cattle...Yeah, the next time she was out there and tried it was the last time. Obedience Obedience Obedience is a must with them. After a couple of years Milo is much better and I can have her off leash when we go fishing/hiking/etc and rarely have to use the shock collar on her. -

They can swim alright....I was out in Wyoming trout fishing and my GSP jumped into the snake river to get to an island that was closer to where I was fishing... pretty strong current and waist deep. -

I have a 3 year old GSP which was my first GSP and they are definite nut jobs. Great dog for the 10-15 days a year I hunt birds but the other 350 days a year she sprints in circles in my backyard and kills my grass. I walk her at least 30 minutes a day but as someone else says that just gets them in better shape. We will hunt all day where she probably runs 10ish miles back and forth and will still have energy when she gets back to the house. She's great and I love her but I probably wont get another GSP unless I can move out onto a couple acres, will probably get a lab as my next dog. If you do get a GSP make sure to take some obedience courses and train them constantly. Nothing like watching your dog chase a jackrabbit across the high plains for 3/4 of a mile... -
1. Mud Stuff - Even if the ground is not ideal for planting crops farmers will do it because the prices are so high. 2. PP - Prevented planting aka our field is still soggy and its past the last recommended planting date for my crop in my area so pay me for not planting aka crop insurance. Alot of farmers used this in 2019 when prices were lower but if they use it again it will screw up the expected yields that is factored into crop insurance...aka they wouldn't be fully covered. 3. No idea about the drying because I'm just the descendant of a hay seed and not a true one. 4. Weather and crops are looking great in Indiana/Illinois/Iowa (Which are the most productive areas) so far.

Fun Fact, Almost everything at Applebees is a fancy microwave dinner. This comes from a girl I know who used to work at Applebees corporate. The same restaurant group that owns Applebees also owns IHOP and she did quality control. She would have to fly to random area's of the country, walk into an IHOP and order a meal then take pictures of the pancakes/etc with a measuring tape to show how big the pancake was/how many chocolate chips were in it etc. Then with the waitress not looking she would bag up all the food, label the restaurant and time then ship it back to HQ for it to be analyzed. She would go to 5-6 IHOPs a day and then ship everything back in coolers with dry ice. Interesting job.

As Royalsfan and other have pointed out this conflict is turning commodities markets on their head. Wheat futures up 70% YOY and that's just the beginning. Russia/Ukraine account for 25% of all wheat exports and 20% of all Corn exports. Even if the farmers can get their grain planted/harvested Russia seems hell bent on cutting them off from the black sea. Russia has been shelling their ports and has sunk some merchant vessels. I think the Ruskies try and take all of Ukraines black sea coast (they are halfway there) including Odessa and that would make it impossible for Ukraine to export anything they harvest. Almost 95% of Ukraines exports go through the black sea. Even if they don't succeed, no commercial bulk cargo ship is going to pull into Odessa to get filled up with grain if there is a possibility the Ruskies might shell the ship, the insurance companies wouldn't allow it. Gonna be a wild summer in MENA if this war continues.
