  1. Agreed. BTW, Every game recipe I have tried from Hank Shaw has been great. https://honest-food.net/
  2. I think these were all members of the LeBaron family, which (according to Wikipedia) has a history of war with other mormon sects. So maybe they were actually killed by other mormons dressed up like cartel thugs -- kind of a modern day version of the Mountain Meadow Massacre?
  3. I used to live near Palo Alto. The basic perks are perfect weather, easy weekend getaways to wine country/big sur/yosemite, everyone you interact with will probably be highly educated. Also, its a suburb but still has a nice downtown shopping area with some good restaurants. It is not like a Texas suburb with only big box stores. In addition to housing costs, one downside for me was that everyone is in tech -- its a beating going to a party and the only topic of conversation is startup shit. Another potential downside is that there is a ton of pressure to succeed placed on kids from a young age -- that could be good or bad depending on your kids.

El Dorado -- I always order the Rene's Enchiladas and a side of Calabasas. The restaurant is too small though; its always crowded with a wait to be seated. As for Fonda, its still worth an occasional trip just for the atmosphere. But I much prefer the food at Suerte and El Naranjo.
  5. I don't think an album has to be groundbreaking to be a great debut. Pearl Jam is one of the defining bands of their generation and they are in the unique position that their first album is their best album. There are obviously more important and groundbreaking rock bands, but they all tend to peak or put out their defining album later in the career arc. I would not put Ten particularly high on the list of all time rock albums -- I just happen to think it is stunning for a debut. I cannot think of a bigger band that peaked with its first album.
  6. PJ's Ten and the Weezer Blue album are way too low. I am not even a huge PJ fan but would probably put Ten at number one on this list. Notable omissions: Shake Your Money Maker, Ryan Adams Heartbreaker, Son Volt Trace
  7. My guess is that Sage was never mentioned because they offer a ton of models and switch them out every year or two -- kind of like Taylor Made in golf -- so its likely that nobody here has cast their current entry level rods. Some sage rods are great (like the X) and some are duds, and it does not always correlate with price. Hydros, a TFO and a decent line will work for sure. BTW, if you really want to go down a rabbit hole comparing rods, then check this out: https://www.yellowstoneangler.com/gear-review/2018-8-weight-shootout-g-loomis-asquith-best-fly-rod-comparison. The caveat is that the rankings are subjective and the methodology has some serious flaws, but the deflection charts and weight data are super useful.
  8. I will try to address the "sweet spot" point. A lot of the manufacturers now make mid-priced rods that are great. The Orvis Recon, Scott Tidal and T&T Zone are all very good. They are slightly slower in action than the high end offerings, which is actually better for some (probably most) people because it requires your timing to be less precise. For reels, nautilus are great. If you don't want to spend that much, the Orvis Hydros SL is a fantastic value. Line is super important (you don't want a cheap one) but it is really a matter of personal preference. I like the Wulff Bermuda, SA redfish or Airflo Tropical Punch depending on the rod it is being used on. Since you already like loomis, the advice above about trying an NRX is spot on. The 8wt NRX is awesome, and its currently being closed out at greatly reduced prices. You may have trouble finding one. Some of the newer rods out are lighter weight, but I don't think any cast better.
  9. Another reason to focus on Dwight is that Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc. is the best country album of the 80s and high on the list of best country albums of all time. No filler . . . just bad ass country songs all the way through. Also, I don't understand blaming Garth for what has happened to country. It would have happened without him. Nashville was always trying to sell watered down pop music. Guys like Kenny Rodgers sold a lot of records well before Garth.
  10. The question of the govt acting against its citizens without trial was a prevalent issue in the Bush years. SCOTUS looked at multiple cases (Hamdi/Padilla) where the administration locked up citizens without trial because they were deemed "enemy combatants." But I didn't realize this sort of thing was still going on . . . and it certainly seems like an amazingly clear due process issue to put a citizen on a kill list (if that is what is really happening here).

The rents must be high in that location . . . which raises the question of how the bbq place next door is still open. I have never tried it and their parking spots are always empty. Must own the building.
  12. As a nod to this very concept, AV Club once did a series where they had their rap critic study country music and profile legendary country artists. The article on Willie is pretty good: https://music.avclub.com/nashville-or-bust-week-4-shotgun-willie-s-concept-alb-1798216450
  13. Its not really a true margarita, but my favorite tequila drink in Austin is the Don Dario from Suerte. Highly recommended.
  14. This is actually a great reason to move to Austin. I get to live in the middle of a big city and still take my kids outdoors on a weekly basis. Not many places you can do that.
  15. Saffron is byob. Food is legit.
  16. Roaring Fork seems like the most obvious answer here. Perfect restaurant to impress small town old people -- I take my parents there. I think Vespaio has a small private dining area. El Naranjo may be a good option if you want to take them out drinking afterwards.
  17. Weah did not play as a true striker for the u23s (he was on the left with Soto in the middle). So far this season he has played wide and as a #10 for his club. I think his future with the US is likely on the wing. I have not watched Bremen enough to know why Sargent has been out on the wings lately. But his skill set seems to be suited for a #9.
  18. Weah is injured, which is a shame. I really want to see a Weah - Sargent - Pulisic front line in action. Excited to see Pomykal and Dest called up for this.
  19. While not "secluded," some of my favorite hill country fishing is actually in the Austin suburbs. The San Gabriel and Brushy Creek are both worth exploring. Also check out Reimers Ranch on the Pedernales. If you feel like venturing further, the Blanco and Llano are beautiful.
  20. Gloster looks promising at LB too.
  21. If it were me, I would push them out of the nest. Important bonds are formed freshman year. They will have a larger social circle and enjoy the later three years more if there as freshman. Also, Stillwater is a small town w friendly people. It’s as easy of an introduction into the real world as you are going to find.
  22. Rawlings is my favorite guitar player of all time. And the Dave Rawlings machine shows are fantastic, especially when Willie Watson and John Paul Jones were in the band. Harrow is an OK album, but the starting point for Welch should probably be Time the Revelator. That album is stunning start to finish. Here is some vintage Welch/Rawlings goodness:
  23. Ol' Jerry actually had some great policy ideas too . . . like that time he suggested to the governor that Iowa should start a war on poverty instead of a war on drugs so the police can bother me
  24. The real kicker here is that Derka has actually eaten at Black's multiple times in the past . . . he just forgot about it because it was back in his rapping days.
  25. I have about $2-3k worth of rather specialized fishing equipment sitting in my garage that I have been too lazy to sell on ebay -- a bunch of rods and reels worth $200-300 a piece. Anybody have experience with the shops that sell your stuff for you (particularly in the Austin area)? I would love to avoid the hassle, but the few I have looked at online seem to charge up to 50% commission, and I am guessing I will still have to exert some level of effort just explaining how to price everything and what to say in item descriptions.
