  1. These wont be new to anyone, but a few favorites: The Dead's Europe '72, The Last Waltz, Nirvana Unplugged
  2. All of the places you mentioned are fine options. Hyde Park is the most walkable, and it tends to have a lot of rentals with grad students living in them. Not a bad choice if single. Of the places you mentioned, Allandale has the largest lots and best elementary school, so it tends to attract families. The neighborhood has a bit of a crunchy vibe, but it also has a lot of professionals and folks that work in tech. Crestview/Brentwood would be slightly less professional and slightly more hipster than Allandale. You should also look into Rosedale.
  3. After reading the most overrated restaurants in Austin thread, I realized some of my food opinions may be unpopular. Here goes: - breakfast tacos are better with a strip of bacon (not pieces) and should have re-fried beans - The influx of "Californians" to Austin is making the food better -- not worse - y mas is the most overrated restaurant in Austin (at least by Surly)
  4. I have an old Dave Scadden inflatable kayak that I traded a fly rod for. Its portable and OK for fishing ponds where I don't have to paddle far. It would probably be good for paddling rivers so long as the river did not have any flat water that required heavy paddling, but I never use it on rivers. You have to fish from a seated position, its slow, it tracks like shit, and it is a pain to inflate every time I want to use it. I also have an old two man cataraft, which has not been used in years and I have just been too lazy to sell -- it is also a pain to row and takes way too long to inflate/set up. And I have a SOT fishing kayak. The SOT kayak gets used 99% of the time. For our waters in Texas, a hard SOT kayak is unquestionably the way to go -- especially one that is stable enough to fish while standing (like a Native, Diablo, or one of the bigger Jackson models). But our rivers have a lot of flat water and relatively minor rapids. Western rivers tend to have more current and more significant rapids, which would make an inflatable much more doable.
  5. I don't think anyone does. Its best quality is that the bakery next door has a decent Kouign-amann.
  6. Not anymore. Thats what Instagram is for now. Try to keep up.
  7. One of the best alt-country albums ever. Not necessarily overlooked by modern fans of the genre. But this was recorded in 1972 and not widely released until the 1990s after the individual members had established solo careers.
  8. You may want to consider staying in Carmel w/ day trip to Big Sur. The drive between Big Sur and Carmel is spectacular (and what many people are actually referring to when they say "Big Sur"). And there are more options for places to stay in Carmel -- unless you are Surly 1% and want to stay at the Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur. Also, I know there are multiple Napa threads here you can check out, but, FWIW, I would book a place to stay in St. Helena or Calistoga rather than the town of Napa.
  9. Very true. I used to live in Cal and spent exponentially more time in my backyard than I do in Texas. We probably ate dinner on our back patio more often than we did in the house. It was also nice not having/needing an air-conditioner (and having lower bills as a consequence).
  10. If you are into the camping/nature thing and the wife wants wine country, then check out Sonoma County (especially the coast) or maybe even Paso Robles (with a side trip to Big Sur). Napa is beautiful and has fantastic wine/food, but it also has a kind of Disney Land feel to it. Some of the other wine regions in California feel much more natural.
  11. Because you don't miss the brisket when they are serving beef cheeks. Also, when they do serve brisket, its fantastic.
  12. San Francisco. With a week, you can combine with wine country or go down the coast to Carmel/Big Sur.
  13. I think half of my junior high owned this album. It was 3x platinum and had multiple radio hits. Not sure it was "overlooked."
  14. We could probably have a whole thread of people covering John Prine songs. This is one of the more interesting Prine covers I have come across:
  15. I prefer Ms. Raitt's earlier work . . . and she has always known how to pick a cover song. Here she is covering Blind Faith and Jackson Browne.
  16. I have not stayed there but have stayed at 4 other Kimptons in DC. 3 of the 4 were fine -- I think the one that sucked was called the Rouge. Best were the Mason & Rook and Monaco, which I would stay at again. Overall, most Kimptons are fine provided you are OK with the location.

    Burgers

The real issue here is that no matter how good that burger is, nobody should go there and forego the green chili pork stew. I guess if really hungry you could order both.
  18. I once saw a werewolf drinking a piña colada at Trader Vic's . . . his hair was perfect
  19. I don’t know about best, but Tadich is the classic spot for cioppino. Also the oldest restaurant in the city and just a nice place for a martini.
  20. Cosmic coffee has a nice beer selection, and you can eat your bbq inside the coffee shop if you prefer.
  21. I guess the Honeymoon in Vegas didn't go as planned.
  22. I guess married life was too much of an adaptation for Nic.
  23. Pete's comment was, unsurprisingly, very thoughtful. It was made in the context of an Esquire interview where he explained that the focus of any campaign should not be exclusively on the candidate or the opposition; it should be on making life better for everyday Americans. Obviously, that is too much nuance for some of these idiots to understand. Pete seems like the most intelligent candidate. I will probably vote for him and be disappointed when he loses. Hopefully the nominee has the good sense to put this guy in a high-profile national position.
