  1. We were throwing a Letort hopper style fly that I tied for the cutts in the lake. Rio Grande Kings and Sparkle Duns on the small streams. Size 14-18. I highly recommend making the trip someday. It’s quite an undertaking to get to the lakes where they reside. I’ve learned quite a bit about the Rio Grande Cutthroats from Chris at Living Waters in Round Rock when we lived in Austin. He has a film they’ve put together that’s on their website and he had a seminar before Covid with the biologist from Colorado Parks & Wildlife. Colorado Parks & Wildlife put out a lot of information about their restoration efforts (Rio Grande Cutts occupy less than 10% of their historic range due to non-native rainbows cross breeding and browns and brookies which out compete the natives Rios): https://cpw.state.co.us/learn/Pages/ResearchRioGrandeCutthroatTrout.aspx https://cpw.state.co.us/Documents/Research/Aquatic/CutthroatTrout/TU_RGCT_broch-final.pdf We just got to fish Sunday evening and Monday. Unfortunately didn’t have more time as I had several projects I needed to return to work on. I could spend all summer up there.
  2. Fishing trip with my son after picking him up in camp. Rio Grande cutthroats caught last Sunday evening at an extremely isolated lake in southern Colorado. Also, some brookies and browns from a little blue line on the Colorado/New Mexico border. One last RGCT. Their colors are stunning.
  3. Last Christmas we were preparing to visit the in-laws in Dallas and I was looking around for things to do to get out of the house. One of my old Dallas haunts was a place over by White Rock Lake on Garland Road called Barbec’s. Overall, their food was pretty meh but their most popular item was their beer biscuits, which people came in and picked up by the dozen. Unfortunately, I learned that they closed for good during the pandemic. I doubly mourned the loss of their delicious biscuits and a good excuse to get out of in-laws house for a short while. As luck would have it, I found the recipe for Barbec’s Beer Biscuits: https://lakewood.advocatemag.com/remembering-barbecs/ They are more akin to bread/cornbread than traditional southern biscuits but they are addictive and go well with butter or a batch of homemade sausage gravy. Long live Barbec’s Beer Biscuits.
  4. Strait Plate was always my go-to at Maudie’s. We always thought the Lake Austin Blvd. location had the most consistent quality over other spots. We lived equidistant between it and Maudie’s Milagro on 360 but usually preferred Lake Austin. Only ate once at Bee Cave and it wasn’t good, although it was shortly after it opened. South Lamar was good, just further away.
  5. I concur. Old Borunda Cafe says ‘hi’.
  6. Damn. An Okie gringo (me) starts a nacho jihad. I always knew I’d be remembered for something…
  7. I’ll throw in two cents for Goodnight book. I’m re-reading the book now as I have a trip planned to camp up in the northeast New Mexico/southeast Colorado mesa country in coming weeks on my way to retrieve the kid from camp. Fantastic book. Possibly my favorite historical book on this area of the country. While a great deal of the book and Goodnight’s history took place in Texas, large sections of this book detail his pioneering of cattle drives up through New Mexican and Colorado, all the way to Wyoming. After reading this book, you see that Larry McMurtry ‘borrowed’ a great deal from this book for the foundation of Lonesome Dove. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the historical Southwest. Photo I took about twenty years ago of Charles Goodnight’s grave out on the high plains:
  8. Have fun! The only advice I’d give is buy your groceries at Costco in Hawaii. There one right by Kahului Airport. Pricing is fairly close to mainland while the smaller Hawaiian groceries will be outrageous. Maui has some great farmers markets too.
  9. Well, at least we now know why Bob Bowlsby retired.
  10. Harry was such a great dude. A little known fact - he grew up in Hollis, OK and was close friends with Darrell Royal. I believe he told me his older brother was Coach Royal’s age. I miss Harry. Not many like him anymore.
  11. How convenient. 99.9999% of OU fan base feels the same about ever playing OSU again. Arkansas will be a nice replacement game in November.
  12. Tren Griffin tweeting about conference realignment and media rights. That’s something I didn’t see coming. 🤣
  13. The media aspects of this round of realignment will be very interesting to follow. I’ve been wondering when Apple and Amazon will make a play for college sports rights.
  14. Mandel is the dumbest SOB in college sports media.
  15. I have a feeling this whole realignment thing is about to shift into high gear for those outside the SEC or B1G.
  16. I got the XX chili for this plate. I’m in complete agreement on the individual nacho construction method as vastly superior to piled mess nachos so commonly seen today. Take note on the above young padawans…
  17. Work trip back to Austin this week and a plate of Freida’s Enchiladas at the Chili Parlor: Probably my fav enchilada plate in Austin in the post Dart Bowl era. You shouldn’t pass up Pepe’s Nachitos either - about as old school as you can get. Serranos are so damn delicious. This is the way.
  18. On another note, I’ve been meaning to post the following - if any of you that are up in Tulsa on business that enjoy New Mexican food, need to try La Tertulia on 2nd Street in downtown Tulsa. It’s damn near as good as some of my favorites in Santa Fe and Taos: https://www.latertuliarestaurant.com
  19. Goldie’s Patio Grill at 61st and Sheridan is not too far off your route. Big parking lot with plenty of room for a trailer too. Goldie’s is a small chain that’s been in Tulsa for years. Unfortunately, several stores closed during pandemic but this one is still top notch.
  20. I’m kicking myself as I’ve driven by Melvin dozens of times the past ten years, coming and going to New Mexico and friends’ ranches. Alas, I may plan a road trip next spring to fish O.H. Ivie and plan some dinners at Jacoby’s. I’m still pissed they put all those windmills on Brady Ridge. MFers. Love that area of Texas.
  21. This is the way. Every CFS aficionado should make a pilgrimage to Strawn. Mount Everest of CFS.
