  1. Mandel is the dumbest SOB in college sports media.
  2. I have a feeling this whole realignment thing is about to shift into high gear for those outside the SEC or B1G.
  3. I got the XX chili for this plate. I’m in complete agreement on the individual nacho construction method as vastly superior to piled mess nachos so commonly seen today. Take note on the above young padawans…
  4. Work trip back to Austin this week and a plate of Freida’s Enchiladas at the Chili Parlor: Probably my fav enchilada plate in Austin in the post Dart Bowl era. You shouldn’t pass up Pepe’s Nachitos either - about as old school as you can get. Serranos are so damn delicious. This is the way.
  5. On another note, I’ve been meaning to post the following - if any of you that are up in Tulsa on business that enjoy New Mexican food, need to try La Tertulia on 2nd Street in downtown Tulsa. It’s damn near as good as some of my favorites in Santa Fe and Taos: https://www.latertuliarestaurant.com
  6. Goldie’s Patio Grill at 61st and Sheridan is not too far off your route. Big parking lot with plenty of room for a trailer too. Goldie’s is a small chain that’s been in Tulsa for years. Unfortunately, several stores closed during pandemic but this one is still top notch.
  7. I’m kicking myself as I’ve driven by Melvin dozens of times the past ten years, coming and going to New Mexico and friends’ ranches. Alas, I may plan a road trip next spring to fish O.H. Ivie and plan some dinners at Jacoby’s. I’m still pissed they put all those windmills on Brady Ridge. MFers. Love that area of Texas.
  8. This is the way. Every CFS aficionado should make a pilgrimage to Strawn. Mount Everest of CFS.
  9. Mmmmm. Del Rancho. I wish we had one in Tulsa as the closest one is in Tahlequah.
  10. Matt’s CFS with Green Sauce slams and goes very hard (photo circa 2017, hopefully one of you bastards will order this and take a pic since I’m 400+ miles away from south Lamar now, and please tell my favorite waiter Joe hello from his Okie friend):
  11. I’ve had hamburger steak, calf fries, and cheeseburger there but not TexMex. I bet it is great.
  12. Mmmm mmmmmm. CFS at Mary’s. It’s been way too long. Everything at Mary’s is badass.
  13. I’d you make it to Laguna, hit Top of the World park for a hike. Winter pics from a couple of years ago:
  14. Man…….Dart Bowl. Dart. Bowl. One of my favorite spots in my 14 years in Austin. To me, it was the absolute tippy, tip top of old school Tex Mex enchiladas. Yes, there are onions on this order.
  15. Way back in the pre-marriage/kids days, I used to live in Heath, TX and my neighbors who were originally from the Rockwall area introduced me to Boots Burger. It’s this tiny place in the middle of a neighborhood just northeast of the Rockwall town square that you could only pick up a bag of burgers. It was like stepping back in a time warp into the 1950/1960s era. Just looked it up on Google maps and I’m happy to see that it looks like Boots is still serving fantastic, greasy burgers in a paper sack:
  16. El Rancho Grande (established 1950) in Tulsa with some legit goodness:
  17. Hello Martha Fockers, Returned to Surly for the first time in a few months to find out why in the hell did El Chile close? WTF? In Austin for first time this week since I moved to Tulsa last summer and planning my fatass itinerary. Here’s and handful of T-town recs: - La Tertulia - 2nd street downtown - outstanding New Mexican restaurant - White River Fish Market - far north Tulsa near airport on north Sheridan - excellent fish market/restaurant that is similar to my old Austin staple Quality Seafood. - Merritt’s Bakery - holy shit…if you’ve got a sweet tooth you’ll hurt yourself in this joint. Couple of locations. - Society Burger legit. Ladies and gents…the Theta Burger: - Dozens of small hole-in-the-wall burger places, great new catfish place called Chippers Seafood at 104th and Memorial. I miss HEB, Dervin and Crown & Anchor, Madam Mam’s, and my old spots like Dart Bowl (bet y’all do too), trips to Coopers…not much else. Come up some time you sombitches. Boomer…
  18. Great hush puppies and sides. We had a lot of good times there with family as my dad loved the place when they came in town.
  19. Had a few beers there during my time in Austin. I remember my wife and I going there for a sunset concert one night and a hive of bees had taken up residence in the wall next to the stairs. You had to bat them away on every return trip downstairs to the bar. Thankfully my time in Austin coincided with Cactus Cafe, Dart Bowl, Horseshoe Lounge, Shady Grove, and Dry Creek.
  20. Just returned from conference. Masks not that big of a deal. Water Grill in Caesar’s was tip-top. Can confirm, the whole city smells like an old school flop house in south Austin.
  21. Pepper steak down in the Frio and Sabinal canyon country: https://texashighways.com/eat-drink/what-the-heck-is-pepper-steak/ Long damn drive for me now.
  22. You’re very welcome and glad you liked the recipe. It’s a staple around our home in colder months that’s a great alternate between batches of chili. We’ve recently moved back to Tulsa, so I’ll have a hell of a lot cooler weather in store than my last fourteen years in Austin…lots of green chile stew and bowls of red upcoming!
  23. Well…it did happen on a Tuesday after all.
  24. Highway 54 from just south of El Capitan to Van Horn in nice. It’s especially nice after a day of hiking Guadalupe Peak and driving towards a great Mexican dinner with the sun lighting up the western sky at sunset.
