  1. True. However, I’ve gotten used to it and I’m usually returning late from West Coast and not much of a crowd during those hours.
  2. I Uber to the airport every time now and love it. It’s more expensive for 1 or 2 day trip but very cost effective for anything over 4 days.
  3. I have to add two standouts from my last trip to northern New Mexico: Mayelas in Pecos, NM - if you’re fishing in the Pecos this summer, drop by Mayelas in the small town of Pecos for fantastic New Mexican food. The place is kind of a dive but they had some of the best green chile rellenos that I’ve ever had. Crispy and just right. Cowboy Cafe in Roswell, NM - on the east side of Roswell on Highway 380. We stopped here on the return trip to Austin. Excellent green chile burger and everything else looked good too. CFS, steaks, etc.. Old school small place filled with local farmers and ranchers. Website - thecowboy.cafe
  4. Not to hijack the Louisville thread but have any of you fat bastards ever made a Kentucky Brown? Recipe from originator Brown Hotel: https://www.brownhotel.com/dining/hot-brown
  5. Dammit. I need to mosey over there and have a few Perkins Specials before closing. F New Austin.
  6. Green chile burger news - Santa Fe Bite opening new location in Albuquerque and new south side of Santa Fe location possibly as early as August: https://www.abqjournal.com/1339381/second-helping.html?utm_term=Autofeed&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Facebook&fbclid=IwAR0JLQrSvCkDNDymF7px9iUQwmiWw0KFsHUIWIlGgyK_qwmg6jb81qDh4p0#Echobox=1562947444
  7. Higher end dinner - Ella on corner of 12th and K is outstanding. Cafeteria 15K was good restaurant as well. Both of the above have good bars and there are many others up and down K Street pedestrian area near the capital.
  8. Yes. Leopard sharks are all around in summer, especially at La Jolla shores. I never been on the tour but see them all the time in the surf from Del Mar to Grandview in Leucadia.
  9. If you’re starving for brisket, drive 2-1/2 hours up to Richmond, VA and eat at ZZQ. It’s owned by a Texan and is legit fantastic central Texas BBQ. As for last things to do in Texas - West Texas road trip - Big Bend, Balmorhea, Davis Mountains, and Alicia’s in Alpine.
  10. Definitely plan on snorkeling during your stay. I stayed at The Orchid a few years back and IMO, the Big Island has some of the best snorkeling any where due to all the lava and variety of fish. i don’t know how long you’re there but a short hop over to Molokai puts on on some of the best bonefish flats in the world. Summer is prime time too due to lack of tradewinds.
  11. This and Kings Canyon and Sequoia. Just a little further in distance west is Paso Robles win country, San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay. Best Farmers markets and roadside produce in the world. Avoid west Fresno and enjoy everything else.
  12. Mmmmm. One of my favorite all-time breakfast dishes.
  13. Grand Island, Nebraska. Makes Pampa look like the south coast of France.
  14. If I ever wrote a manifesto, the above would be included verbatim in my food/beverage section.
  15. I had no idea my kids visit this website.
  16. Manhattan Clam Chowder far superior to New England Clam Chowder.
  17. Kerby Lane Cafe sucks donkey ass. And drumroll please......breakfast tacos/burritos are highly overrated.
  18. That’s probably the place. We had a hunting lease out by Sweetwater all throughout the 2000s and ate many meals on the front and back ends of hunting trips. Outside of Perini Ranch and some Tex Mex spots, most of our meals are out at my friends’ ranch the last few years.
  19. I probably have the name wrong (I’m old ever) but there was a Catfish place I’ve eaten in Abilene that was very good.
  20. Damn....a bunch of city slickers dissing on one of my favorite Texas towns. I usually cook out at my buddies ranch between Abilene and Albany but have had many great meals over the years in Abilene. Best is the aforementioned Perini Ranch in Buffalo Gap but Catfish Corner and a 1/2 dozen good hole-in-the-wall Mexican food places have been spots for good meals.
  21. Only thing I’ll add is definitely plan a good beach day, rent some boogie boards, etc.. My kids can spend 1/2 day at beach and never get bored with riding waves, catching mole crabs, or just walking up and down the beach picking up shells and cool rocks. Our favorite beaches are Del Mar, Fletcher Cove at Solana Beach, or any of the Encinitas beaches. Great restaurants all up and down the 101 in that stretch of coast.

Austin has a woefully poor number of options for a city of this size. Best I’ve found is Phoenicia on south Lamar. Good quality but you have to sit outside on one of the two-seater tables as they have no inside seating.
  23. I make a quarterly trip to El Rancho Mercado at 183 and Ohlen Road. Guajillos, ancho, chipotle meco, chipotle morita, pasilla, and seasonal supply of pequin. They have bins of dried peppers and on the end of aisle near produce, they have peppers in large bags that I find fresher for guajillo and ancho. Their marinated skirt steak absolutely kicks ten kinds of ass too.
