  1. Years ago on a spring break, we took our kids on a camping trip to southern New Mexico near White Sands. We camped at a Valley of Fires, which was short trip to White Sands and also close to some mountains that we wanted to hike. I booked four days at the campsite (really nice Federal campground) and the park director was an old cowboy type guy. He said “when you check out, ask me about Roswell and I’ll tell you the true story.” A few days later, I’m checking out and ask him to tell the Roswell story. He leans back in his chair, smiles and says “well, I hate to burst your bubble but the truth about Roswell is the Army Air Corps crashed a B-29 outside of Roswell and the B-29 was carrying a fully armed nuclear warhead. They had to make up a story about weather balloons to hide the fact that they were all scrambling around 100mph after almost vaporizing Roswell and having a radioactive debris cloud settle over Amarillo. That’s the truth.” Most logical story I’ve heard. I still believe him.
  2. Big amen! Best chile rellenos in the free world too.

  4. Yep. One of the reasons. Tulsa is still hot in summer but not blast furnace hot. We’ve hit three days of 100F temps this year.
  5. I’m an Okie but that was the first thing I thought when I read the article. However, Grand Lake nearby proposed development is not exactly a shithole by any stretch.
  6. Ran across this article tonight on the GreatToyota War in Chad and thought you all would enjoy. I’d love to have a Hilux: https://www.historydefined.net/the-great-toyota-war/
  7. When we lived in ATX, we’d spend week and a half in north County San Diego at the end of July every year. I was always one depressed SOB getting back on the plane for the return flight to Austin each year. I definitely recommend a trip out to Alpine if the monsoon season is strong. It’s usually quite pleasant out there in late July and August when monsoon rains pop on in the afternoons. It’ll definitely help beat the blues.
  8. That never happened. I went on a fishing trip that day…. Out of sight, out of mind. Ha!
  9. I apologize if the following is trite - an old west Texas man gave me a super power for dealing with ass blistering weather: wet a bandana with ice cold water and place it around back of your neck. You’ll need to re-apply water if you’re out in the heat for long duration but literally, it is like a super power when coping with extreme high heat. Some PhD will write a thesis on the science behind keeping your blood cool in the back of your neck. In the meantime, know that it works…
  10. 2011 was such an ass whipping. Do. Not. Have. Fond. Memories. Of that shit.
  11. Following this scene, one of the greatest dialogue in movie history:
  12. The most beautiful fish that swims in freshwater. Rio Grande cutthroat from last year’s trip caught in a southern Colorado alpine lake:
  13. Tiny brookies were willing Saturday outside of Estes for camp pickup. Unfortunately, no long Colorado high country cutthroat trip in the cards this year.
  14. Surly astrophysicists have any comments? https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2023/07/07/harvard-professor-avi-loeb-ufo-fragments/70391430007/
  15. I’ve spent a lot of time in Santa Fe and for most part, have loved the vast majority of my experiences. Great people, great food, climate for bulk of the year is stellar. When we lived in Austin, our plan was also moving to Santa Fe in some capacity - full time or half the year. NNM hits all the points. The tri-culture is a constant source of angst among the three (my in-laws have a place in Chama and Rio Arriba County takes it up a few notches, although they’ve never had any direct property problems.) The best way to describe it is it always seems like someone has been wronged, everywhere you look. Artist Eli Levin has many paintings that relate to the tri-culture: Crime can be bad in Santa Fe and some downright mean shit has happened nearby some places we’ve stayed. There is a darker side to the City Different. We love Ski Santa Fe. It’s damn sure not Vail but if good snow year (many years in a row now for good snow) it’s great to be able to drive 30 minutes up the mountain, hit the slopes, and then back to town for fantastic dinner. Now that we’re in Tulsa, we’re looking for at places in Colorado or even Wyoming for a place down the road. With that said, there is no finer place to be in the Fall than Santa Fe. Aspens on the Sangres, roasting chilies, great weather - tough to beat. Santa Fe will always be special place for me.
  16. Great minds think alike.
  17. More information on the ‘Battle of Conoco Fields’: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Khasham I remember when the above happened but didn’t understand the severity of the complete ass kicking:
  18. Sorry if this has been posted before but I found it compelling understanding Priggy and his first cannonball run before running into US military: Definitely read first hand account feom Wagner survivor. The definition of fuck around and find out:
  19. Lots of sketchy shit all over Portland. Be very aware of your surroundings at all times, especially with kids. Homeless/open drug use problem here makes Austin look like Mayberry. Violent crime way up per local clients we ate dinner with last night. Great food options all over town but the smell of piss is all over town. Kind of ruins the food scene. Really, really sad what has happened to what used to be my favorite city to visit 15-20 years ago - a once great city.
  20. Two nights here and more casual than Austin. Did Jake’s Seafood tonight and it was fantastic. It’s been 20+ years since I’ve eaten there and it’s still great with same old school vibe. Apps, salads, and entrees were great. Dungeness crab stuffed salmon was tip top. NW Portland is very cool and vibrant (reminded me of Portland I loved twenty years ago). Great restaurants and bars everywhere. Avoid Old Town.
  21. I haven’t been mugged yet or converted to a steampunk enthusiast but did have a fantastic brunch at Screen Door Eastside: Chicken and Biscuit: A colleague ordered the praline bacon…dayummm: Still extremely sketchy in parts of downtown. Hotel clerk said there was a shooting just down the street last night and their valet just quit as it wasn’t safe. I changed hotels. 74F though.
  22. I sincerely hope he does not have nukes.
  23. My granddad on Peleliu in late 1944.
