  1. If Russia is serious about this I would expect them to go whole hog. Pummel the LZ with artillery, drones and CAS on site to hit anything that still wiggles during approach and drop, then drop guys in the dark. At this point who the fuck knows though. The competence of the Russian military is severely in question.
  2. Can someone make this an avatar for me? This is fucking greatness. edit: disregard, for some reason I remember it being a pita about image size on the old site.
  3. Again, the man was a comedian 3 years ago. He’s not carrying Ukraine with military or domestic prowess. Dead he will be an even bigger symbol because he no longer has any baggage attached, he was that badass that jumped into the streets with an AK to fight Russians. Bonus point for him being dead is he won’t have to deal with the aftermath of all this shit, because all this adoration is going to sour real quick once the infrastructure and economy are fucked. Feel bad for whoever is in charge after this is all over.
  4. He was a comedian 3 years ago. Not sure how you can say he’s not exceeding expectations.
  5. That’s why Putin wants to establish a puppet regime and GTFO. He doesn’t want Russians to do the heavy lifting for the next part. The longer the Ukraine govt holds out the worse this is for Putin directly.
  6. Yep, and the log train is the soft underbelly of any army. That’s who Ukraine needs to target. Ignore the tanks, go after the supply trucks. Tanks can’t run without gas, troops can’t run without food and bullets. That’s how you beat an army.
  7. No idea, but that makes sense. Stand-to is miserable, and I can’t imagine doing it for months on end during an actual war.
  8. Sorry, I thought you asked about why they were attacking around 4AM constantly.
  9. Those are stand-off weapons. Direct engagements right after dusk and before dawn is military 101. Look up stand-to time.
  10. Attacks around then are pretty normal military doctrine. It’s when your body is the most tired/least responsive. Even without NVGs that was a thing. We would just pop flares before we got the tech to own the night.
  11. I think she thought big bad Russia was in the rear view and everything would be resolved diplomatically. The only force she needed was the token stuff to assist us in the Middle East so she could check the box. We had a couple of Germans at a viasat conference. They talked about being way being on link-16 deployment and talked about their gum and bandaid budget. It’s one of those ugly realities that if shit really did go down in the EU, NATO would struggle to coordinate at the level the US is used to because everyone else is still a gen behind at best.
  12. They can be publicly traced as long as they have their transponders on. They use an IFF system (identify friend or foe) to figure out who is who once things get shooty. IFF doesn’t continuously transmit, it replies to an incoming signal so you can get your sneak on.
  13. Yup. We flew into Balad for a C2 mission in June of 03 and landed right before NVGs were required. By the time we got the birds secured it was dark as shit. Some orderly walked us across the airfield to the tents we were staying in for the next few days. Next morning a crew chief went to check on his bird but stopped about halfway there and came back pissed. There were blue baseballs (cluster submunitions) laying in the field we all stomped across in the dark. EOD came out and put on a show. They laid a chunk of c4 and then buried them in sandbags, like 10 of them. The cook off sent those things at least 40 feet in the air. Pretty sure I have a sweet 240p recording of that somewhere.
  14. Yup. Russia fired their cheap stuff hoping Ukraine would cave. They absolutely have the guided munitions needed to be more surgical. Now Putin has some serious math to work out, because I don’t think his army is willing to sign up for an expensive, drawn out slog with body bags on TV every day. He needed shock and awe, hasty surrender, and the establishment of his puppets to take care of the real dirty work to come. I don’t think he anticipated a real fight, and I don’t think he wants to spend the time and energy to try to bring the Ukraine in line. Makes me worried about the next couple of days, because he may decide that leveling a city will break their spirit.
  15. I’m sure it’s effective. I’d probably only put the Gurkhas ahead of them as just absolute pound for pound bad asses.
  16. Pretty sure CNN accidentally interviewed those guys earlier. Thought they walked up to a Ukraine squad and during their convo found out they were actually Russian paratroopers. They were on the interior of the airport and shooting towards the perimeter, so that means the Ukraine had an effective counterattack to retake it. That’s bad news for Russia. It likely means they overstretched their advance and mistimed those paratroopers so they got stuck without armor support. Ukraine is making them pay.
  17. That would only serve Putin’s narrative that they are the baddies. It’s better to amputate a limb or two so they don’t die from their “wounds” and then send them back home. Wounded soldiers are a bigger burden mentally and physically for the army to deal with.
  18. It’s a good way for things to get shooty real quick.
  19. Ideally they are being held in reserve for the coming asymmetric stuff. They were never going to be as effective trying to go toe to toe with the main push.
  20. Its tough to say. I think there is some reservation wrt targets in urban areas so far. Seems like they are lobbing minimal cruise missiles there to knock down air defense and then using the cheaper stuff (help air assault) to take care of the rest. I think for all of the posturing, Putin is trying to get through this as cheaply as possible, so they aren’t spending the good stuff unless they have to. The MLRS stuff would be more akin to the shock and awe stuff we saw from Iraq. We know they launched a shit ton of them, but I guess they were used to soften up the deployed armor that’s away from the urban areas so we aren’t seeing any of that footage.
