  1. The same astroturfing was done with common core, right? Its never been about social issues or academic performance. It’s always been about trying to creep religious education into public schooling, or shifting tax money into religious private education. CRT is the latest name plate on the education wedge Rs have been hammering for as long as I can remember.
  2. I knew the hawks were bad, but I didn’t realize they were “only two players not in a negative +/-“ bad. One of those players is at zero. The other is +1. Hawks need to clean house. There’s a lot of hand wringing about firing Stan Bowman and losing Scotty too, but too fucking bad. This team is a complete dumpster fire. Last night players were drawing up a PP plan on a whiteboard, Colliton and staff has completely lost the bench.
  3. I think that line of thinking is part of the problem. The US military isn’t there to bail out everyone that waltzes into a bad situation expecting a rescue because ‘Murica. I know movies have trained us to believe that ST6 can roll into any situation and leave a pile of bad guy bodies in their wake with all the hostages alive, but that’s not reality. A rescue attempt is very likely going to result in a bunch of dead missionaries.
  4. GG was shitty, but the worst part of that day was trying to sleep that night. Both shoulders were fucked, and you had a golf ball in your ass from the PB shot.
  5. I would think camera people are in the line of sight of guns quite a bit on movies sets. It’s not a static medium where you could easily set up a remote camera to capture the shot.
  6. The SD travel advisory warned about kidnappings and violence. The missionaries ignored the warning signs about kidnapping and violence. They then took an 8 month old into the allegorical crocodile pit. Didn’t realize I had to spell this out, my apologies.
  7. Yes, when someone ignores the warning signs and enters the crocodile pit in the zoo, it’s the crocodiles fault for acting like a crocodile.
  8. The road to ruin is paved with good intentions. The State Dept has a level 4 do not travel advisory for Haiti, with violence and kidnappings as part of the advisory. It’s tragic that an 8 month old is in that position, but the blame lies squarely with the ministry group.
  9. That’s where critical thinking and context clues have to fill in the gaps for you. She prefaced it pretty clearly. If the vaccine has the backing of medical professionals, she would take it. If Trump was the only guy backing it, she wouldn’t. There was a lingering concern that Trump would promote another unproven silver bullet to prop himself up before the election. Like HCQ, or bleach, or sunlight inside the body. Again, with context and precedent, it’s pretty easy to parse. edit: the video backs up what I’m saying. Trump contradicted Redfield’s congressional testimony about vaccine availability (2ish minutes into the video) by trying to imply that it would be available before the election. Biden’s response was “I trust vaccines, I trust the scientists, I don’t trust Donald trump.”
  10. I don’t understand what’s controversial about this? If medical professionals say to take it, I’ll take it. If the medically ignorant president alone says to take it without medical professionals backing it, I won’t take it. Normally you guys are better at cutting out the context and only delivering the scary sound bite.
  11. How about we wear masks if we feel sick, Covid or otherwise, while in public? I would suggest staying home when sick as well, but with our stellar employment sick policies that’s not possible for many, so at a minimum masking up to reduce spreading would be helpful. No, we won’t eliminate Covid or Covid deaths, but we can reduce them (see seatbelt example above). The side benefit is we would also reduce other respiratory illness and death like flu, which would lower the number of sick days people take, the number of hospital beds that get filled up, etc. The only downside is one group of people who’s feelings are hurt about wearing a chin diaper. The biggest problem is it’s an honor system, and a significant % of the population has shown they have none. That’s why mandates are being used. We tried the carrot and it failed. Now it’s the stick.
  12. Watched the Salzburg/Wolfsburg highlights. Brooks didn’t have a stellar showing, especially on the third goal. Hope he can find his form again before the WC.
  13. Topical: https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Japan-and-South-Korea-never-did-full-lockdowns-16550763.php *heavy sigh
  14. I should also add, that if the war on science isn’t over, science is definitely boxed in and low on ammo. The antivax movement wasn’t a right wing thing in genesis, but the right certainly did a lot of heavy lifting in eroding public trust in science to lead to the explosion of antivax sentiment that is prolonging Covid. You would think that having so much access to information would lead to an enlightened period, but the opposite is true. Lack of processing power or critical thinking, too much contrarianism, all of it contributes to something bigger than dunning-kruger in how we are getting so far apart in how to respond to crises. Our shit is very broken.
  15. I would love to believe we can learn to live with it, but watching all the bullshit around masks and vaccinations plus our comorbidity and obesity rates tells me the US is going to struggle worse than a lot of industrialized countries. Many Asian countries normalized mask wearing for respiratory illness a long time ago. If you feel sick, you wear a mask when you go out, and no one bats an eye. We no longer put collective or societal good over tribal identity, and that’s going to lead to more suffering.
  16. Wheels fully off in Portugal now. Another Gnabry run and some nice passing through Stanisic leads to a Sane finish. 4-0.
  17. And Lewy finishes another Gnabry run. Nice feed by Sane for the sitter. 3-0.
  18. Gnabry forces an OG with a near post cross, 2-0 Bayern.
  19. Sane just hit a cracker of a free kick. 1-0.
  20. It’s been end to end stuff. Neuer has had to make two ridiculous saves to keep it level. Bayern has had two goals called back through VAR.
  21. Fun fact: Bayern and France have never lost a game that Hernandez has started. Going to go ahead and put the jinx to the test.
  22. Benfica is pretty fucking good. Going toe to toe with Bayern. Great game so far.
