  1. Bad news for you, CNN is running video now showing the exterior of the capitol. The entire exterior is now a no-climb fence and is being manned by NG guys. I think someone up thread nailed the picture you originally bitched about. Probably the night shift guys or a reserve element getting some shut eye. I expect the capitol to maintain this posture through the inauguration. There is tons of SIGINT that the hardcore Q/MAGA guys are planning an armed protest/attack the next go around. No one inside that building is going to complain about being overprepared at this point.
  2. Until Hannity, Carlson, Pirro, and Ingraham flip, he hasn't lost shit that matters. The primetime opinion shows on Fox are the guys shoveling coal into the engine on the trump train.
  3. I guess we are doing this. Less dangerous in what fashion? Yes, they are carrying M4s. They can shoot people. Are they more likely than the capitol police to open doors for MAGA, take selfies with them, give directions to certain offices, and disable panic alarms? We know the capitol police will do those things, so I guess someone decided to roll with the NG until they can sort out traitors amongst the CP ranks. I'm pretty sure the congressmen aren't really concerned about being "surrounded" by the armed servants of state power that are asleep in some fucking hallway.
  4. No, its the exact opposite on the surface. Most industries aren't impacted by political beliefs. You can be a doctor or programmer and express your political beliefs without any impact beyond people taking their business elsewhere. The military is expressly apolitical. That doesn't mean the people within it are apolitical, but when you put on the uniform you put that shit away and follow lawful orders and the UCMJ. I know you see hatch act violations in DC pretty regularly, but its enforced a lot more in the military. Yes, law enforcement and the military skews republican, but I think that's more to do with the budgetary support of that party than the normal party pillars. Abortion for example, is probably not something you'll see strong feelings about among the rank and file in the military. Republican leanings, in my experience with the military anyway, is more about voting for your wallet than anything else.
  5. The former might be why the latter is there. I think the dems have some significant concerns about the capitol police, so the NG's presence may be at their request. I doubt the next incident we see will have a visible run up to action. It probably wont involve an advertised date, lofty speeches, or a slow walk up to the capitol or WH. It also probably wont be as "peaceful" as the last one. The NG is stationed in the right place, inside the building.
  6. There are plenty of Republicans that can set aside their political beliefs and do their jobs. Its the fringe guys that are a problem, and I have no idea how you root them out proactively. Some are crazy enough to tell you, but there are more than enough that will only discuss their thoughts in sympathetic company. A rotating buddy system is probably the best way to potentially keep it in check. Officers work in pairs, and the pairs change regularly. I know the military gets insider threat training, it probably needs to expand to include more political extremism, left and right. We just cant let this become the new McCarthyism.
  7. It wasn't on January 6th either until it was. They are starting the impeachment today, crazy shit can follow.
  8. Its what the Army does. When you get downtime, you sleep. Doesnt matter where.
  9. Misdemeanor charges are only the beginning to open cases. That sound you hear is a lot of sphincters tightening collectively.
  10. The whiplash on net neutrality that is coming from Republicans may kill more people than the Capitol riot.
  11. Nah, send her an invite and park her in the back next to some unimportant bureaucrat. She will probably bail on her own instead of facing the embarrassment.
  12. JFC, Hogan Gidley was just on fox and said something along the lines of "If Twitter and Facebook can claim to be private businesses that can do what they want, then every gym, restaurant, and bar should open up and make the same claim against the states that are keeping them closed."
  13. Yea, this entire discussion is based around a response (or more accurately, the lack of one) that matches what happened at the capitol. The SS uses an entirely different playbook. I don't think anyone would get past the fountain on the north lawn in one piece. I'm sure they have access to the full arsenal of our military, and a MK-19 is a hell of a terrain denial / mobs of people clearing weapon.
  14. I think we are underestimating how ponderous things are for a legislative body this size, writing a document under this much scrutiny, after their offices were ransacked. I know how long ECP reviews take within my tiny gov't program due to all the aviation safety concerns. Im sure the legal questions and analysis for ensuring you dont leave the president an easy avenue for escape isnt something you can just whip up and pass around 160 people for review and approval in a day.
  15. I thought he was just a rank and file guy. I doubt he was in position to receive intel from the FBI and set the security posture. That’s the chief or higher I would think. The chief resigned, so maybe there is some smoke there.
  16. I have no doubt that some of the rank and file were passive at best, and outright supportive at worst of the rioters, and maybe some are shitting their pants at being capture on media doing that and deciding they don’t want to face what comes next. If he entire department being unprepared is a call made from much higher. Trump is crazy and willing to do anything to retain power. That’s not even a questions anymore. How multiple levels of management and oversight didn’t flag this is pretty alarming. The SS didn’t look around when bringing Pence in and start making some calls? If a single party or president can align an entire power structure that’s in charge of security with sympathizers, it’s probably time to change up how that process works. Maybe we have to have some kind of partisan binary in certain offices or positions of power in at least an oversight role to ensure something like this can’t happen again. The days of trusting people to uphold their oath to the constitution sadly seem to be over. We can’t govern with that as an accepted standard.
  17. I think it was their haste to provide like services for Twitter. To get a blue check on Twitter you have to submit a phone number, email, and I think address, and then submit it for Twitter to review. To accelerate that and I’m sure to overcome their limited staffing, they used official gov’t ID. It’s not horrible on its face, but it should never have happened without robust security and data handling protocols. As expected, this is becoming the definition of “you want it bad, you get it bad.”
  18. Yea, I think the 3 big takeaways I gathered from that are: 1) Parler didn’t delete anything users thought was deleted. It just tagged the data as deleted do it was no longer visible. It also captured raw data, so metadata info (what device, what location, what sensors used, etc) for all their uploads, so it’s a great evidence trail for the law to beat you over the head with. 2) lol dat security tho 3) Because Parler chose to use SSNs and state ID photos, they ensured that the posters of illegal or embarrassing content conveniently provided non repudiation.
  19. Yes, but like all good mob bosses, I'm sure there wont be a record of him ordering the capitol police to take the day off, not have riot gear, gas, rubber bullets, etc. Whoever made that decision formally is someone that is going to take a very big fall. Hope the wink and nod from Trump before hand was worth it, because whoever it is will join the pile of believer's bodies Trump leaves in his wake.
  20. Report on Fox News just now saying the FBI and NYPD both warned capitol police about the intel on violence coming from the protests. Its going to be interesting to see where the buck stops on this.
  21. I dont believe so, BT beaconing is 1-3ish meters accurate. It will be good for evidence against all the idiots claiming they didn't enter the capitol, maybe even specific rooms/areas, but I would think that would be it. I would think they have plenty of video evidence for that. It may take a lot longer to sift through, but the FBI has nothing but time.
  22. Yea, I knew the wifi broadcasts to all the APs would get sniffed, I didnt even think about femtocells or BT beacons. The anti-science crowd is about to hate science a lot more.
  23. I think it was audio they wanted. Suffering is pretty universal in that medium.
