Is that a Rabbitgoo harness? I love the front leash hook - the best thing for walks if you have a dog that loves pulling.

Bruce, my 140# Newfie doesn't give a shit about where his harness hooks. Pulls like a train regardless.

Yeah I imagine a dog that size can outpull anything. Rocket is 90 lbs and a combination of front hook harness and loose leash training on walks has made a huge difference.

  2. There was some guy, a doctor type, at the old site that strenuously maintained that if violent, the mentally ill would remain so for their lifetime, even if a juvenile.
First, I don't think we know enough about the mind to conclude anything so absolutely.
And, Christian has led a productive, non-violent life for 41 years after the crime.  More than three times his age at the time.
I knew most of the story, but didn't know that he was at Timberlawn, so I'm not sure he received super top-notch care.  Currently, at least, Timberlawn is kind of a dump and more resembles the asylums that we shut down than a state-of-the-art mental health facility.
This may be a special case or an aberration, but I think it is incumbent on us as a society to attempt more sincere rehabilitative efforts, especially with juveniles.

The article says that Timberlawn closed - are you referring to another place?

  3. he was admitted to UT law?  after shooting and killing his teacher in middle school?  in austin?  what?

They explain in the article but the gist (as I understand it) is that he didn't have to disclose his past criminal activity because he was a juvenile when it happened. And his family was able to keep it out of the news for the most part so it wasn't a case where everyone knew about it and would recognize his name several years later.

  4. This month's Texas Monthly has a fascinating article on a shooting that happened at Murchison Middle School in 1978. A student walked into the classroom, shot his teacher, and left. The shooter was the son of LBJ's former press secretary. He spent a few years at an inpatient rehab facility in Dallas, then went to law school at UT and still lives in Austin. I've lived here 21 years and have a student at Murchison and have never heard of this. Great read if you have a few minutes.

  5. If there's a thread for stuff to do during isolation that's not geared towards kids and teens, point me in the right direction. For now I'll just share this here - we are huge Geeks Who Drink pub trivia fans, and if anyone else is too you probably saw that they had to lay off just about all of their staff. But, because they are awesome, they are going to do livestreams of quizzes on Twitch, and you can donate to help keep those going - right now it's basically run by volunteers. They did the first one tonight and while it's not quite the same as doing it at an actual bar, it was still fun and brought a small sense of normalcy to our lives. Twitch channel here.

In our house, when a dog is laying on you you are exempt from having to move from your position lest you disturb the dog. We call this dog law. Everyone in the family knows that if the person the dog is on needs something, the other family members are to get it for them or help them out in whatever way. Need a drink refill? Invoke dog law and someone will do it for you with no complaints. Need to go to the bathroom? Sucks to be you because you can't get up. Etc.

  7. AISD offered curbside lunches to children who need them yesterday, and if schools are closed after Spring Break they'll do this M-F starting March 23. The full list of locations and times/details is here.

Also, if anyone has young kids and is trying to figure out how to entertain them during this time of social distancing, someone posting this sample schedule on FB and it's a pretty good jumping off point.

Sunday I witnessed a young punk abandoning a puppy. Just stopped, looked around to make sure nobody was watching, and ran to the middle of a field and dropped off the little guy and then ran back to his car and sped off.

I went over and picked him up. Took him back to the house and set him up on the front porch with some water and a towel. My dogs wanted to murder him. Dachshunds are incredibly territorial and possessive. Like "Fuck that puppy, you're my human, asshole" possessive. I've got no more bandwidth for a 3rd dog.

Went on facebook and asked if anyone would take him in. Of course it got shared about 50 times, eventually a guy I know and trust stepped up and took him. 2 days later and at least a dozen people that I'm not even connected to are asking if hes still available, and would it be too much trouble to drive him to Florida? (From Beaumont). Then of course all the busybodies commenting that I should demand the police check out any surveilance cams to find the abandoner and then have him strenuously prosecuted (lady, go for it. I already have a job.), and that I immediately need to go drop a grand on the dog at the vet to rule out all health problems before I give him to anybody. Or that I need to check out the rescuer to make sure hes not going to use the pup as a "bait dog." (what's that?)

Breed unknown, I suspect he is about 7 weeks old?

I refused to name him (you name him, you own him) but the guy said he was gonna name him "Huevo"

So you did find someone to take him, or are you still looking? I can share with the folks back home if he still needs a forever family.

The worst thing about Bernie is his supporters, just look at BT. Everything else he says is reasonable, I just wish he didn't sound like he was scolding me the entire time

Right, like he's always yelling. He reminds me of Craig on Parks and Rec. THIS WINE IS FROM SOMEPLACE BEAUTIFUL AND WARM AND AMAZING WHERE EVERYONE IS IN GREAT SHAPE AND THE NIGHT SKY IS FULL OF STARS!

  10. I have nothing against Bernie personally but out of the remaining Democratic candidates I think he's the least likely to beat Trump. I think if he gets the nomination it almost assuredly gives Trump the win. Way too many brainwashed GOPers who lose their minds when he describes himself as a socialist. I mean, I voted for Warren and I will vote for whoever the Democratic candidate is in the national election, but if Bernie gets the nomination I'm getting ready for four more years of Ol' Combover.

I didn't think it was possible to be "inside" a tornado - I thought it was like a vacuum in there. Is that what he actually means, like being in the eye of a hurricane?

Generally they say wait 24 hours after your fever is gone, but I have no idea if that applies to this virus.

I made a run to the local Walmart to stock up on non-perishables.  It was busy, but the checkout lady said no more than normal.  They had plenty of zinc lozenges, but not enough of of my preferred granola flavor.

A question.  I know people exposed need to be quarantined 14 days, as it can take that long to show symptoms.  But how long is a person contagious after they have it?  Ie, I get sick tomorrow, and obviously self-quarantine.  I am mildly sick for 3 days, then feel pretty good.  For the regular flu, I'd probably go back to work.  In this case I'd need to stay home until I was no longer contagious.  How long is that?  How long is a person contagious after infection?

I mean, the rule about being 24 hours fever-free is what I would assume, but again, I don't know if that applies to this particular illness.

A loved one is having brain surgery Thursday (here in Austin) and while I would normally not worry a ton about something like coronavirus at this point, this whole situation has me worried more than usual. I assume his immunity will be compromised for a while.

I’ve been looking for durable dog chews for a few months. Got a deer antler and it started off great. Gave it to her Sunday and it’s just about gone (Thursday). I also gave her a femur bone but it seems she buried it somewhere in the yard. I cannot find it anywhere.

We have a Kong, she just doesn’t love it. Same with nyla bones or whatever the synthetics are.

    What else am I missing?

I’ll stick to antlers if I can find them cheaper.

My dogs are major chewers. Water buffalo horns are favorites. For plush toys, the only ones that've ever lasted more than a day are Fluff n'Tuff brand. The beach ball is the best one because it doesn't have a head or limbs for them to chew off instantly, but others that have lasted a long time (more than a few weeks) are the caterpillar and hippo. In Austin you can get them at Kriser's on Great Hills, but they also have them on Amazon.

Of course.  We're giving up eating out until this runs its course.  Sorry, young restaurant startup couples.  Gonna be a lot of bank repossessed Mazda CX-30's.

Last weekend at Jason's Deli I saw a kid pick up a salad bar plate, lick it, use tongs to get a bunch of shredded cheese and put that on his plate, glance at his mother next to him to make sure she wasn't looking, then ditch the tongs to stick his hand in the shredded cheese and put more on his plate. So that's how we're all going to get coronavirus.

The Great Pyrenees puppies are almost 6 weeks old. It is going to be a sad day when they leave, but I won't miss cleaning up the endless amount of shit.

The rescue has officially put them up for adoption. I don't think it is going to take long.

Here are some pictures from this weekend.
