  1. That plant is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, ones in the area. The road it's on (136) has been called Rubber Plant Road as far back asI can remember. Drove in to Groves yesterday. The boom woke me up, but we were supposed to get storms last night and I thought it was thunder. We are at my parents' house, about 1.5 miles away as the crow, flies but no damage. The hand of God must have been over that place because it is amazing that no one was killed.
  2. Jesus. Like it's not bad enough just to live in Anahuac. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. My husband and I and his whole side of the family hates Trump. My parents don't hate him as much as we do, but they aren't fans. My mom's sisters and their husbands and kids, though, are super brainwashed MAGA people. It sucks because I love them but they are definitely beholden to the opinions of their circles of friends and the Fox News crowd and believe every bullshit meme they come across. I avoid politics at all costs around them. There's no point in arguing with people when you don't share the same standard of truth. I usually volunteer to get everyone more drinks when it comes up.
  4. So I did one of those Wisdom Panel DNA tests on him a while back and was very surprised that lab didn't show up. Here are his results. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. A while back I mentioned to my 7-yo that puppies are puppies till they turn one. This morning he announced "Today, he's a dog." Happy 1st birthday to our giant, lovable Rocket .
  6. We did obedience training with both of ours as soon as we adopted them, both around 9-10 weeks old, and the trainer always emphasized how much dogs' core... behaviors, beliefs, etc (for lack of better words) are all but set in stone by 12 weeks old. Not that you can't alter or undo some stuff after that, but it gets exponentially harder. It really isn't much time. Living the dream, if you ask my 11-yo. Or my husband.
  7. Generally speaking, federal law does not currently require private-party sellers to ask for ID or perform background checks as long as the gun isn't crossing state lines and isn't one of the gun types regulated by the National Firearms Act. Several states do have background check requirements beyond what the feds require, though, and I guess it's possible for private sellers to do their own background checks as a matter of personal policy.
  8. Moses the cat died some time last night, in the room he had of late come to share with Lucy and Bella, the pugs. He was born in 2005 and adopted by my grandma (Mawmaw) that same year. He evacuated from Hurricane Rita in the backseat of my mom's Toyota Avalon, with my grandma feeding him kibble through the bars of his carrier. They were on the road for 21 hours, which is how long it took them to drive from Port Arthur to Austin after the evacuation order was issued. This was probably, admittedly, a shitty way to begin one's life and maybe was part of the reason why he was such an asshole most of his life. Mawmaw died in 2010 and my parents took over his care. He had 9 good years with my parents and the pugs before he got sick. Because this is a thread about awesome dogs, I want to point out that Lucy and Bella accepted him as their BFF once he came around, despite him being a jerk to them most of the time. God bless dogs and those of us they love - feline, human, or whatever else.
  9. I cannot imagine how someone's first reaction to news like this is "well, statistically, it's very unlikely for a kid to get shot at school." The odds may be low, but the stakes are about as high as they can get. That "fraction of a point" is people. I DGAF if y'all keep your hunting rifles and your pistols and whatnot, but for the love of Christ can we at least implement universal background checks and close the gun show loophole? I mean sure, maybe it won't solve the problem, but it won't hurt anyone and best case scenario, it could save a few lives. Those lives could be my children, or someone else's loved ones. How is that not worth the effort?
  10. I'm halfway through and liking it a lot so far. Started the second season of Castle Rock and was inspired to read Misery, which is one I had never gotten around to. I hadn't realized it was one of the few SK books with no supernatural shit - just a really evil human. And while many of his books feature the protagonist as a writer, Paul Sheldon seems particularly on-the-nose as a character who parallels King himself. The whole thing about trying to be a "serious" writer and feeling like he's held back by the success of his popular books, and literally being held captive by his "number one fan" - great stuff. A slightly less competent writer would've mucked it up.
  11. From Vulture: Every Stephen King Reference and Easter Egg in Castle Rock Season Two
  12. I couldn't find an existing thread anywhere but the show's in its second season (Hulu) so let me know if I just missed it. If you couldn't guess, it's kind of a mashup of elements from different stories in the Stephen King universe. Season 1 was great, but season 2 has been phenomenal. Imagine Annie Wilkes' (played by Lizzy Caplan) origin story combined with Salem's Lot. Fantastic supporting cast, too, and lots of Easter eggs for King fans. They release episodes every Wednesday. Just watched the latest one (The Laughing Place) and wow.
  13. Yep, because none of us deserve dogs. That pic was from a few days ago - this was today. Bella's belly kills me. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  14. My parents inherited my grandma's cat when she died in 2010. He has always been the meanest bastard ever - he wouldn't let anyone get near him except my mom, and even then it was years before he stopped hissing at her. Of course he's always hated their pugs, even though they keep trying to play with him. Well, he's pretty sick and likely has kidney failure. He's all skin and bones. But apparently he has become the friendliest thing in the last few weeks. He would never give the pugs the time of day, but apparently Bella is his new BFF and he hangs with her on her bed every day. I guess at the end of his life he decided to make amends. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  15. "How are these not the same person?" Anyway, Greg's girlfriend lives in our old hood in Leander. I guess he used to be a personal trainer at that gym in the Rail Yard, and he was my friend's trainer for a while. She was so happy to hear this news.
  16. I thought these were the same person at first.
  17. Whatever the reason for the attack, even if it's retaliation for something, I will never understand how someone could kill children. Two of them were infants, for god's sake.
  18. SO CUTE! He looks just like my Rocket when he was a puppy!
  19. Just got an email from Beto's campaign. He's dropping out. I like him but I think it's the right call.
  20. There is so much wrong here. And not that it is the worst thing in the article, but McKamey outing that woman for cheating and then using it against her in her...experience is so bizarre. Yeah he straight-up says that in the article. If anyone gets close he'll just keep moving the needle.
  21. What in the everlasting fuck would compel someone to want do this? I mean, Jesus Christ. I got jumpy walking through a dark room in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, after watching the TRAILER for Paranormal Activity.
  22. Yeah I'm nervously waiting to see what he ends up saying. Wouldn't be surprised if it's something like this. RIP, Rep. Cummings.
