  1. Things I didn't know until recently. Donald Malarkey was the impetus for "Saving Private Ryan," and introduced the story to author Stephen Ambrose at an Easy Company reunion in the 80s. Malarkey told Ambrose the story of the Niland brothers from Tonawanda, New York. One of the four Niland brothers was close friends with Malarkey's best friend in Easy Company, Warren H. "Skip" Muck. They were from the same hometown. Muck had shared the story with Malarkey and he recounted it to Ambrose much later. Private Ryan is based on Fritz Niland, Skip Muck's buddy.
  2. My Mom was the sole caretaker for her parents for the better part of two decades. Traveling back and forth to her hometown every weekend and after my grandfather died, an additional couple of evenings per week after work because my grandmother was wheelchair-bound since contracting polio in the 40s. When my grandmother died my Aunt drove in from East Texas towing her horse trailer and waltzed away with everything that wasn't bolted down. Greedy people suck.
  3. One-and-done seasons? "Band of Brothers." mic drop. Glad someone finally mentioned "The Larry Sanders Show." For my money, the top five: The Wire Deadwood The Larry Sanders Show Sopranos Six Feet Under
  4. Knew a guy that flew a Warthog in Iraq during the first Gulf War Actually flew over the “Highway of Death” strafing Iraqis and their equipment retreating from Kuwait. He described it as a turkey shoot. No ground fire to worry about and just cherry picking targets, trying to inflict as much death and damage as he could.
  5. I loved watching those A's teams. The matchups with the Orioles in the playoffs were always intense. I remember racing home after school to watch ALCS games in the afternoon. I'll never forget watching Bert Campaneris throw his bat at the pitcher in the ALCS after being hit by a pitch. Charlie Finley was an egomaniac of epic proportions. He couldn't or wouldn't share any credit for the team's success. He broke up one of the best teams in the history of baseball to make a buck before Bowie Kuhn could order him to sell the team.
  6. Sorry if already asked and answered, but what did Kendall send Greg off to do right after he hung up?
  7. Agreed; however, I was disappointed that they included the voicemail message. I'd have preferred Shiv to step out to make the call and come back to the conference room and deftly handle the inquisition. Really sold it. Otherwise, we knew what was coming as soon as Kendall stepped outside to make the call. Roman will rise to the level of his incompetence. That Logan was reaching out to Roman right before the end told me that even Logan saw Roman as the weakest link.
  8. ...which is how he came into ruling the country.
  9. These photos are an inspiration and are going to push me through recovery from my next knee surgery!
  10. Unmentioned, but the BLACKHAWKS STRUCK GOLD last night in the NHL Draft Lottery. Re-sign Kane to take Bedard under his wing and start putting the pieces around him. Don't f around and squander talent like the Oilers have with Connor McDavid.
  11. I caught a little bit of the Baylor re-run last night on LHN. I didn't remember seeing this before, but Whittington was absolutely rocked on a quick screen. Ewers led him upfield on the throw and there was absolutely no one in front to break the momentum of the BU corner. Had it been "live" I would have held my breath and begun praying. But, he hung on to the ball and bounced right up.
  12. Jenny Craig. Killed by Covid (and Ozempic) Not the Person
  13. I don't know what obligations Modell still owed Cleveland. Clearly enough to be compelled to leave the team name and colors behind for the new owner. I know that even before Bud's contract with Drayton McClane and the Astros expired, he had agreed to move the team. Once that Astrodome lease expired, he owed no obligations to his baseball landlord, the Harris County Sports Authority, or the City of Houston, and was free to go.
  14. The NFL didn't "allow" anything. That was worked out beforehand and was a concession Modell made to Cleveland in the agreement to facilitate his departure because Cleveland had the leverage to do so.
  15. How could they have done that without owning it?
  16. Edit to add: 24.7 Sports Reporting that Lance Blanks has passed away. TJ Ford posted this on Twitter. God bless him, if true. BMW forever.
  17. Legend has it that Bud's dad staked him to some money and told Bud he had to get out of Oklahoma and make his own way in the world. Bud decided to try New Orleans, but he had a layover in Houston on his way there. During the layover, he met a bunch of wildcatters in the airport lounge and before long he was tanked up and had missed his connection. He decided to stick around for a few days and then to financially back the folks that had pitched a deal to him in the airport lounge. He never left.
  18. Watching UDFA signings, salaries, and contracts last night and today. They’re making more and more money than most late round picks. I believe we are going to see smarter NFL teams shifting away from UDFAs by making more of an effort to aggregate late round picks to leverage the salary scale and avoid overpaying for talent that may or may not make the roster. Wouldn’t be surprised to see the NFL add a couple of rounds back to the draft as well.
  19. All of this because Bud Adams got shitfaced on a layover in Houston and missed his connection to New Orleans.
