  1. Nothing wrong with selling to an investor. Totally agree. If your only motivation for taking a position on Code NEXT is to sell to an investor, who is going to maximize their own value, while hiding behind 'community character' to guard against increased density (which serves as competition for you and your investor making as much money as possible), then that's a problem. Or at the very least, it super hypocritical.
  2. Fuuuuuuuck me. Disappointed in Tovo for signing up with the worst among us. https://www.mystatesman.com/news/local-govt--politics/four-austin-city-council-members-offer-path-forward-codenext/wtk2WUUIgftjE2GwleJs9H/
  3. You should definitely be anti-CodeNEXT if you're just interested in selling out to an investor. Bonus points for being able to hide behind "community character" while doing it.

That’s pretty much it. If you want to add that it’s a net positive to the community as a whole, with possibilities way beyond soccer (like concerts),and would create a bunch of jobs, that would be even better.

Pool posted a non awful update on the official Council message board. Maybe she’s coming around. If you’re in D7 and up for a call or email to her office, now is the time. http://austincouncilforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1057

I ended up getting sucked into a Twitter argument a couple days ago with some guy from Columbus who was suddenly an expert on the history of economic development and budgeting in the city of Austin.

Yeah, I don’t get that at all. I hope that one of the things we learn from this effort, in addition to everything else is going on, is that we need to engage with our members and not let NIMBYs control the narrative.

Or they would get stoned. From an early May AAS article

Team continues to strongly push the narrative that it has to happen by the end of June, if it's going to happen at all. Good to hear about Kitchen. Feel like this is wrapped up as long as it can get a vote. Which, considering CodeNEXT issues, is not guaranteed.

PSV isn't doing anything there until they are sure they have a deal. So, I think it's unrelated. Also, the last potential deal I read was that PSV would play at DKR, not Myers, in exchange for grass.

The good thing is they only need six votes. I’m guessing Mayor/Pio/Tovo/Casar/Flannigan are in. Pool/Alter are out. Means they just need one out of Garza/Kitchen/Houston/Troxy. Seems like the kind of thing Troxclair could support and I can see Garza being on board if there’s a commitment to small business.

Much of the fight I’ve seen is between the Austin soccer community and people from Columbus or San Antonio who have suddenly become very concerned about affordable housing in Austin.

A terrible city council member, different from other terrible city council members insomuch as she can’t seem to make a complete thought. Alter is almost as terrible, but she sounds way smarter about it.
  14. Guess who showed up at Gracywoods HOA meeting tonight (that both CMs Pool and Alter attended) with some very questionable “facts” about MLS attendance, land valuation and tax benefits of other uses of the McKalla Place site?
  15. I did. They’re so bad. Thought it should also go here.
  16. CoTA seems that way even when dealing with competing soccer proposals. Like putting misleading research out in the field. https://www.austinmonitor.com/stories/2018/06/survey-finds-soccer-stadium-concerns-alternative-development-proposals-on-tap/ In an interview with the Austin Monitor, Spataro disclosed that she performs property tax consulting work for Circuit of the Americas, which is set to be the home site for a United Soccer League team in 2019 and would compete for the dollars of soccer fans if a Major League Soccer franchise also moved to Austin.
  17. This white lady who filed to run against Pio seems like she would fit in great with many other members.

PSV and city reports came out today. Very strong proposal from PSV and city report is also supportive. It would take a fool to be opposed to this thing. Leslie Pool continues to be hot garbage with her comments. Meeting with her Tuesday in a small group. Hope soccer comes up.
  19. I bought my first HD TV in November 2007. Watched a top five matchup between Kansas and Missouri that very night. Seeing Mark Mangino in HD for the first time was.......something. Almost took the television back.
  20. Having kids did this to us.
  21. Hey guys, "Council" isn't a monolith. If y'all would get off your ass and get engaged, as opposed to letting the HOAs and labor groups run the city, we could have a lot better outcomes.
  22. It's a great idea, but since the bitchy status quo NIMBYs actually participate in civic government and don't just lob bombs on message boards, it's an overcomplicated mess. The Planning Commission has made a lot of good moves today to improve what comes before Council and I have a little bit of hope that things will improve. The original version imagined a dense and connected city, but then the anti-growth assholes convinced people that all of their neighbors were going to knock their houses down and build high rises on the lot next door. And people bought it. The development community, Chamber and affordable housing community are all in favor of it. As far as the petition goes, it came about from people basically standing outside of grocery stores and lying to citizens about what Code NEXT does. The only notable thing Council has done since the passage of 10-1 was to ignore this bullshit and not put it before a vote.
  23. The finalist list made it seem like the DC Metro area was the trendy pick.

Feels like this should be in the COTA sucks thread. MLS in Austin social at EastCiders tomorrow afternoon for anyone that wants to show up and talk to a group of guys that want a pro team in Austin and also aren’t affiliated with PSV. Only downside is that my kids will be there.
