  1. Have people gone back and rewatched the 1st half possessions carefully? Most of the blame is on missed blocking assignments. I think ewers is getting a bad shake on this board. We had 7 possession in the first half.

1: ewers tripped, low throw to sanders on 4th down. This TOD is on ewers.

2: brooks long screen for a td

3: 1st deep ball should have been dpi, 0 gain Baxter run, OL failed on 3rd down - QE should have stepped up and thrown but tried to squeeze through and run and was tackled.

4: 2nd deep not even close to ad made irrelevant from a defensive offsides, nice slant to worthy to get into red zone: then bad run, followed by ewers bootleg out of bounds, and a dropped td by brooks-fg

5:long cb4 run, got to 21yd line then: bad run, good throw to JT in end zone almost a great td (great deep ball by ewers here), false start on 52 followed by a 3rd & forever deep middle throw that sailed and went incomplete-fg

6:worthy stepped oob cost us a 1st down, good brooks run, followed by brooks stopped on 3rd up the middle, 4th&1or2 run but ad missed block and rb was stuffed . TOD

7:get the ball on the 3yd line with 4:25 and somehow run out of time…two bad missed deep shots in this possession. Bunch of missed blocks. Fg

Good analysis. A few add ons.

    1. The tod was a freshman rb missing a key block forcing Ewers into a quick throw. Plus punting was also an acceptable option there.

    3. Spot on. This isn’t on the line. The pocket was fine. Quinn decided to run
In that same series, AD wiffs on two blocks on the Baxter run. O line was fine.

Add on penalties for us, ignored for them, and it adds up quickly.

After rewatching, I overreacted to a poor 1st half where I wanted bludgeoned puppies.
  2. This is often the problem with fans complaining about scheme issues. Most don’t have a damn clue about pass protection schemes and most likely passing concepts as well. (not even including coverage adjustments or blitz induced hots) We don’t know what they are coached to do or who really made the mental error.  Most people don’t know that they don’t know stuff.

It’s the Dunning-Kruger Coach in Hindsight Effect.

  3. It fits actually. While I agree with your take he shouldn't be nervous after being QB1 all last season, I'd guess Fall Camp was no contact for QBs. Couple that with an OL that hasn't gelled yet on pass pro in particular, and I could see some potential for live bullets "rust" in game 1. I was particularly interested to see how the OL would handle stunts/blitzes and creative lineups this game since they didn't handle it so well last season. I think once they "know" what they're supposed to do, then that talent will be able to assert itself with authority. Question is, how soon can they get it together. Likewise with Ewers.
Keep in mind that the OL practices against a particular defense and probably get's to know their tendencies. Rice wasn't obligated to play by that script. They don't have to be superior talent to generate confusion in the OL.
Ewers' first half poise was shit and he took sacks he shouldn't have. Hell, he self-sacked once. 995'rs pumped his improved footwork, haircut, mature approach, faster release, deep ball connections and going through his progressions. I think he failed under live fire and reverted to poor habits. But he just might adjust and be better in game 2. He'd best get it together soon though or make way for next man up.

My problem with the O line quote goes back to the “iron sharpens iron” axiom that people love to throw around. Our O line should have had a field day based on how good our D played after facing them all summer long, tendencies be damned. We’re bigger, better, stronger, right?
And Campbell is the only new face, so, what is there to gel?
Sark did them no favors with the bone-headed go for it on 4th on your own 30 on the first drive. That just smacks of beyond narcissistic stupidity.
I support your optimism, but that opening series was a red flag for me, and I really believe this team is going to be good.
  4. "Once he settled in..."

    "...was this close..."

Sark's interview at the end of the first quarter was concerning when he said the O line needed to communicate better and QE was nervous. Nervous? WTF?

You are at home after a full season and an off season playing against the one team you're assured to smoke by 50 points. If there ever was a time to come out with some swagger and John Wick fuck you up attitude, this was it.

  5. Bright side stuff:

Worthy is clearly healthy and had a fantastic game. Showed again why he’s a top wr in the college ranks when full strength/speed.

There’s obviously still a ton of questions about QE and whether he’ll rise up to be the leader everyone hopes for, but if he gets hurt, it ain’t gun-shy Hudson Card sitting second string anymore.

Baxter’s injury is concerning, but, yeah, that one run should be enough to tell even the uninitiated he’s got “it”.

  6. Thread derail:
Are they still going to do that pussy ass Journey shit at the game where everyone gets their phones out and sings, “Don’t stop believing….”?

An article on SI today covered the history of Wisky’s 3rd quarter “Jump Around”, and for real, our “thing” is … (insert your own derogatory explanatory word) compared to that.

I still have hope for him as a game-day thinker. He clearly stroked out a few times and didn't make obvious changes, but there were times when he did make obvious changes, they just didn't work. He says he's aware of the problem. Hopefully he's smart enough to have someone badass in his ear specifically tasked with adjustments.

With our growing cast of playmakers, he may be able to change that narrative pretty quickly.

I'm on board with this thinking. All coaches have to be somewhat prideful and arrogant, but Sark strikes me as the kind of guy who is willing to learn from his mistakes and maybe knows when to admit his limitations and ask for help if he needs it. Maybe that's just a recovery thing?

  8. I'm going with 10 wins.

I can see a scenario where we win more or all of our games, but between the youth we still have, Big XII refs and a "fuck y'all" agenda, angry rabid last conference road games, Bama uncertainty, unpredictable injuries, and maybe that game where we think our shit doesn't stink, I see  losing a game or two we should win but don't.
