When did you give your kid(s) a cell phone?
Soldierhorn replied to markstanco's topic in Can You Help Me With This?
This is such a 1st world dilemma and it makes me laugh. How did we neanderthals from the 20th century live long enough without all these devices to have offspring so that they could make such life altering decisions? Seriously, if my woman badgered me enough to get a kid a phone, it would NOT be a smart phone. I have plenty of old phones in a drawer that I could put back into service. Kids can text with a flip-phone. I know because my youngest literally wore the letters off of one. Since most kids dont earn an income, they are poor and could probably qualify for one of the 5,000 some-odd Obama phones still waiting to be had. haha -
4K HDR - is it worth it?
Soldierhorn replied to William_Cannon's topic in Can You Help Me With This?
so... you are saying I should wait to upgrade my picture tube tv? Question: does buying one of these smart looking tvs make the women on "the view" sound smarter? otherwise, there has to be something wrong with my tv -

When did you give your kid(s) a cell phone?
Soldierhorn replied to markstanco's topic in Can You Help Me With This?
I dont know what that means so I'll just ignore it and talk about something else Not to long ago, I went into the phone store and asked them how do I do something on my phone. The young lady gave me a blank look and said you cant do that with that phone. She checked her computer and said, it shows here that you've never upgraded your phone. I told her nope and I didnt know I needed to upgrade until now and still not sure I "need" to upgrade. She said, since you have so much store credit that you've never used, we can give you one of these nice phones for practically free and then you can do what you want to do. I asked her if my Razor flip phone was on her list and I can just transfer the service to it. She had the funniest look on her face. LOL I ended up getting a fancy-smancy LG android phone - it's shiny -

"When did you give your kids a cell phone?" Never did. that was back in the '90s and they are in their upper 30s now. I didnt get my first cell phone until I was 49 mostly on the insistence of my daughters for emergency reasons. I hardly use it and it often goes dead for lack of use. I view the $30/mth unlimited text and talk as a kind of insurance. -
Security Cameras (Ring vs Nest vs Arlo)
Soldierhorn replied to dad's topic in Can You Help Me With This?
Personal observation. 1080 is sexy but wireless camera is just not there, yet, IMO. This is my third wireless camera security system and I'm still not that impressed. I'm looking for some land right now and I dont think my main system will be wireless the next time when I do move. I'm not an expert on this stuff but here are some thoughts on the latest system upgrade: -- what does wireless mean? It means the video is sent wirelessly. What it doesnt mean is the camera doesnt need any wires. Each camera still needs a wire to power the camera... so if you have to run a wire to power the camera, why not just run a wire that does both: the video and the power? -- Wireless is not magic. The last two systems I had, the wireless stream was good to about 30-35 yds and probably cut by 20% or more depending on how many walls you expect it to go through. If your base unit is in the house (most all will be) Expect to have to buy antenna extensions; so far, I've used three extensions for 4 cameras and my house is not large. If the cameras have to be so close to the base unit to get full reception bars, then what's the point? I can run wires anywhere in the house and attached to the house through the attic. What I really needed wireless for are cameras NOT attached to the house and that has been very disappointing so far. -- Wireless systems are not flexible. I would think these systems would want to be flexible for the end user so the end user would recommend it to other people. I have an extended wifi home network system. I should be able to tap into my wifi network from anywhere in my yard and beyond. Why cant my home network wifi be an option to route my camera through if it is too far from the base unit? You would think that would be an easy option and make the system flexible to MY needs. But, no, in spite of what they told me before I bought the system, the firmware does not have an option to add my home wifi network to the camera network/management pages. The cameras will ONLY sync and communicate with the base unit and because of the very limited "wireless" ability, the "wireless" system is not better than the hard-wired camera system I already have. -- Software/Firmware is annoying and laughable with each system so far. When I'm trying to figure out a new system (that is from a completely different language), it's very annoying to run into nonsensical pages and tables. For instance, my system has a whole page laid out like a spread sheet/table dedicated to listing hard drives. I spent hours trying to get backup hard drives to sync and show up on the page via USB port. I wrote an email with screen shots explaining what I was trying to do. The response was: "you cant do that; it will only list one hard drive. it will only back up with thumb drive" and thumb drive is a different page entirely. really? so why have a whole page dedicated to hard drives implying you can have more than one? makes no sense. Almost every page and section of the firmware has something annoying like that. I dont know if this helps anyone and I could list a lot more thoughts. And, then there is the instruction manual... -
Security Cameras (Ring vs Nest vs Arlo)

It has its own base unit that operates like a router communicating with each camera and also connects to home wifi router to access outside the home through app; not unlike other systems I have such as simplisafe security system that also has its own base unit that talks to the different devices wirelessly and also taps into the home wifi network did that answer the question? I have a modem that I use exclusively as a go-between spectrum and my home network router. Other systems have their own base unit that operates as a wireless modem/router for their devices Edited to add: today I got the garden camera to work well enough so that it is acceptable. It still pauses but not nearly as bad as before. I added two antenna extensions to two cameras to shorten the distance between them and between the base unit and the camera routing the garden camera through. it's acceptable now. Before, the pauses were so long that a person could walk through the garden and the camera might not even catch them. -
This reminds me of an instructional VHS video that I have (from the mid '80s, IIRC). It is of Nolan Ryan giving pitching pointers and his demonstrator was Randy Johnson before he became famous - awesome video. I probably need to find it and convert it to digital

Oh, yeah... I would resist any parent that would insist on all parents shelling out money for full uniforms at this age. It's a waste of money and some parents simply cant afford it but are pressured into it. T-shirt and/or cap is ok; full uniform is simply dumb, IMO

exactly. If I had to do it over again, would start the first couple of practices with all the kids in the stands or sitting on the ground with their parents and let them know that this is organized fun. I would direct most of the comments to the parents such as there are no scouts here watching your little mr wonderful. If you want to yell and scream, it had better be positive, esp if directed at other kids, the coaches or the umps; nobody here is doing this for a paycheck so dont take it so seriously. Safety first; fun second. What you want is for kids to understand basic stuff like going to first base and not third base after they hit the ball. funny crap SHOULD happen! I had a nephew that played. he hit the ball and was running around the bases because the opposing kids could not catch the ball to get him out. As he circled third base, his mother was screaming, "GO HOME! GO HOME!" He stopped and looked at her for a second, changed directions, and started running to the direction of their house. Dumb bohemians. I was rolling on the ground laughing. She actually had to go catch him.

Your biggest mistake would be to try and "coach" T-ball. Your only hard decision is finding a first baseman that can actually catch the ball once in a while. Dealing with parents is usually the biggest problem.

I think lowering the odds to get two B12 teams in a playoff format has more to do with a 10 team conference choosing to play a CCG do-over. As we have seen, other teams have gotten in the playoff without the "13th data point" nonsense that now seems to only apply to the B12.

Never done the manscaping thing; never felt the need to make my junk artificially look bigger than it is. Anyway, if I were to do the manscape thing, I think I would use the Micro-Touch SOLO. It's the best beard trimmer I've used and it trims very close to the skin LINK

Security Cameras (Ring vs Nest vs Arlo)

I'm looking for a good peep-hole door camera that doesnt have a monthly fee - any ideas? A doorbell camera is not of much use in my case since it is perpendicular to the door. -
Security Cameras (Ring vs Nest vs Arlo)
Soldierhorn replied to dad's topic in Can You Help Me With This?
agree... and I have been apprehensive going wireless just for that reason. I should have done what I planned on doing and that was to run pcv conduit underground out to my garden, which is what started this from the beginning. -

I have both: the older analog cable system and new IP wireless system. The picture from the newer 1080 IP cameras are nice, esp night vision but... they pause a lot. I had to re-position the IP wireless base unit from my office to the center of the house just to get full bars (reception indicator) from two cameras. A third camera has two out of three bars and pauses quite a bit and the camera out in my garden (in order to have oversight in a blind area) is virtually useless. I really didnt need to go wireless but monitoring blind spots meant putting a couple of cameras away from the house. What I dont understand, and havent received a good resolution from the chinese company, is why do the cameras have to communicate to the base unit directly? If the base unit is connected to my wifi network, why cant I route cameras through my extended wifi to the base unit? I have been able to route the "garden" camera through a camera mounted on the back porch but that is still blotchy at best and not working very well. The reason I went with the Anran system was because I was told via email that what I wanted to do would work through their system with multiple path options from the camera to the base unit - it hasnt worked yet. I planned on replacing the older analog camera system but they are reliable during bad weather and display almost real time images; they dont pause like the wireless cameras... so I'm going to leave them in place for a while until I figure something out that is better. The wireless system doesnt seem to be working as advertised.. .or what was told to me at least -
I needed good but cheap sunglasses that I could wear over my prescription glasses that I need to drive. I quit buying expensive sunglasses because they usually break just as easily, or I'll leave them somewhere, or someone will decide they need them more than I do. I tried the TacFlip sunglasses and LOVE them and I have bought two more since then and keep one in each vehicle. I still have other sunglasses (Oakleys from when I was in Iraq) that are ok for working out in the yard but the TacFlip sunglasses are perfect for my needs when driving https://www.ebay.com/itm/Bell-Howell-Tac-Glasses-Sunglasses-Glare-Enhance-Colors-ASTV-Cycling-A1/333153800362?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

yeah, even though I have unlimited internet usage through spectrum, it bothers me when things are running unnecessarily. I bought a wall switch that I can turn off and on with a remote. All the tv entertainment devices plug into a surge protector and the surge protector plugs into the switch that plugs into the wall. from my recliner, I can turn everything off at one time when I go out the door or to bed.

no. and wont Pay for internet: $65/mth pay for IPTV (for all the sports channels, PPV, and LHN): was $5/mth but went up to $7/mth pay for VPN: $4/mth and one other station for political stuff

I've never used Xfinity. I have unlimited download with Spectrum

yes. I live in Killeen/Ft Hood and get all the Austin channels (~60 min south) and all the Waco channels (~60 min north) along with the Temple/ Killeen channels. I shouldnt be able to because it is perpendicular to my antenna but I also get Bryan/College Station channels sometimes (~50 min east). I get about 50 channels with my antenna in the attic and my house is in a low spot.

That is what was said of 5* John Chiles as well... yeah, I'm still waiting.

Couldnt disagree more. Based on what I saw in the spring game, if he played at all as a receiver during the 2019 season, it would have served only to satisfy his ego. The Horns bring back three very good senior receivers; then there's Eagles, Moore, Pouncey; Epps, Woodard and that's even before you get to Whittington, Washington, and Jake Smith. Pouncey looked better than Bru did during the spring game. During the spring game, I didnt see Bru throw a single block, he didnt create any separation with the DBs even though he went on quite a few mid to deep routes. He got a lot of reps; played both on the orange and white team and at both left and right wide-outs as well as slot positions. He caught three passes and none were particularly noteworthy. At the end of the first half, he got one step behind Boyce (?) but the throw by Thompson was a little high and out front. If Bru hadnt stutter stepped for 5 yds, he might have been able to make a play on the timing pass. Bru looked like a linebacker wanting to play a 7 on 7 game, IMO
