UT's next basketball coach - discussion/debate [Sean Miller Hired]
HookEm replied to alphahorn's topic in Basketball
I guess we will just have to see what happens, but there is no way I would hire 70 year old Rick Barnes ahead of 56 yr old Sean Miller. Barnes may literally retire this year. And Pope + Golden have won a grand total of two tourney games each. I can't put either of them over a dude with 21 tourney wins and 5 P5 conference titles who is still in his prime. College coaches are successful into their 60s - 70s. There is no real reason to take a chance on someone in their 30s -40s. You can get a guy who is 50 with plenty of runway to still coach at a high level for 20 years, but who already has skins on the wall and knows how to run a major program. The last 20 title winning coaches and their age (median is 54): Dan Hurley - 49, 48 Bill Self - 58, 44 Scott Drew - 50 Tony Bennett - 49 Jay Wright - 55, 53 Roy Williams - 66, 58, 54 Mike Krzyzewski - 68, 63 Kevin Ollie - 41 Rick Pitino - 60 John Calipari - 53 Jim Calhoun - 68 Billy Donovan - 40, 39 -

I guess you missed that I listed each coach's number of coaching years, age, etc. And had Todd Golden 6th and ahead of Rick Barnes despite him only winning 2 tourney games in his career. Admittedly, for simplicity I didn't list current seasons, but they are included in the total tourney wins and conference titles. How would you rank the SEC coaches as potential hires from top to bottom? -

He has won 5 Pac-10 and 3 A-10 championships. The SEC has some good coaches, but I don't get the angst that somehow Sean Miller is middle of the pack. There coaches like Barnes, Cal and Pearl who will all likely retire within the next few years. Sean Miller is 10-15 years younger than Barnes and Pearl and already has comparable skins on the wall. And there are guys like Todd Golden that look good, but we have seen the wheels fall off young coaches before. Here is how I would rank the coaches based on resume and runway (assuming retirement at 70-72): Nate Oats (50) - 2 P5 titles & 10 tourney wins in 10 yrs coaching Chris Beard (52) - 1 P5 title & 13 tourney wins in 13 yrs coaching John Calipari (66) - 6 P5 titles & 59 tourney wins in 33 yrs coaching Sean Miller (56) - 5 P5 titles & 21 tourney wins in 20 yrs coaching Bruce Pearl (65) - 6 P5 titles & 17 tourney wins in 30 yrs coaching Todd Golden (39) - 0 P5 titles & 2 tourney wins in 6 yrs coaching Rick Barnes (70) - 5 P5 titles & 29 tourney wins in 38 yrs coaching Mike White (48) - 0 P5 titles & 6 tourney wins in 14 yrs coaching Buzz Williams (52) - 1 P5 title & 12 tourney wins in 18 yrs coaching Mark Pope (52) - 0 P5 titles & 2 tourney wins in 10 yrs coaching Porter Moser (56) - 0 P5 titles & 6 tourney wins in 21 yrs coaching Mark Byington (48) - 0 P5 titles & 1 tourney win in 13 yrs coaching Matt McMahon (46) - 0 P5 titles & 2 tourney wins in 10 yrs coaching Dennis Gates (45) - 0 P5 titles & 1 tourney win in 6 yrs coaching Lamont Paris - (50) - 0 P5 titles & 0 tourney wins in 8 yrs coaching Chris Jans (55) - 0 P5 titles & 1 tourney win in 15 yrs coaching -

I don't LOVE the hire, but if you look at Sean Miller's current resume, it is pretty comparable to Rick Barnes and Kelvin Sampson at the same age. Miller doesn't have a Final Four but he has a ton of Elite 8 and Sweet 16 finishes and quite a few conference titles. Sean Miller 0 Final Four + 4 Elite 8s + 4 Sweet 16s Kelvin Sampson at 56 1 Final Four + 1 Elite 8 + 1 Sweet 16 Rick Barnes at 56 1 Final Four + 2 Elite 8s + 3 Sweet 16 Mark Few at 56 1 Runner Up + 2 Elite 8s + 6 Sweet 16s Bruce Pearl at 56 0 Final Four + 1 Elite 8 + 3 Sweet 16 -
I think the fact this is our 3rd game in a row is actually beneficial. Each game we have played better, integrating Weaver back into the rotation. We are 100% in "March Tourney Mode", while Tennessee is coming in cold off a break. Plus Barnes doesn't LOVE playing extra games in the conference tournaments.
-
Larry Johnson was an incredible college player. 2x 1st team AA. NPOY. 2x All Tourney team. National Champion. Those UNLV teams were so good. He was also NCJAA player of the year twice.
-
This game is an absolute beating. Every game this season has been an absolute beating. Rotney is an absolute beating.
-
I would be fine if Weaver took all of Pope's minutes. I struggle to think of a single thing he does consistently well.
-
Oh, this program has an identity. The identity:
-
My assumption is that all coaches from the pros down to the junior high level are assholes until proven otherwise. About 90% of my coaches over the years were assholes, regardless of the sport, with my UT track coach being the biggest one of all. You could say the same for drill sergeants. And probably executives.
-
Hell they should have made it without that damn blocking out call on Brock Cunningham
-
If a true hardass coach would completely toughen up this soft ass squad. Last year’s team was super soft as well. It is almost like many of you have never played actual competitive sports.
-
I think everyone is underestimating how much impact a top-5 coach would have on a team like this. In my view the difference between a top-10 and a top-40 team isn't all that great. Hell, we almost beat #2 Auburn and #4 Tennessee with shitty RT. And we actually beat #12 Mizzou, #18 Kentucky and #22 Aggy. The problem is consistency and getting a team to do the little things that result in close wins. And keeping their focus to avoid the blowouts. We currently have a team full of individuals, playing individual defense and one on one hero ball offense. A great coach would elevate everyone individually, but also have them working like a well oiled machine such that the sum is better than the parts. Hot take, but this team is more talented than the one that Beard took to the National Title game. We have some players who can play individual defense, but Beard would have them working as a unit, switching and helping and masking all the deficiencies. He would smother teams with a lineup of Larry + Mark + Trey + Pryor/Kent + Kaluma. And his boring motion offense would make a guy like Kent look like the all-conference player he was at Indiana State. The team is already pretty efficient on offense, shoots FTs and 3s well and doesn't really turn the ball over. Perfect for Beard. Or imagine if Dan Hurley had this squad, they would be one of the top offensive teams in the country, out running in transition and maximizing all the individual abilities. Coaches like Hurley or Bill Self would have Jordan Pope and Mark playing like different players.
-
It is odd to say we don't have the talent of a D-1 basketball team when most of our players have been successful starting for other D-1 teams Tre Johnson - Probably top-5 pick and the 2nd best freshman we have ever had Arthur Kaluma - Started 37 games for an Elite 8 Creighton team Tramon Mark - Started 37 games on a Sweet 16 Houston team (and was a 20 mpg contributor their Final Four team) Jordan Pope - Leading scorer for a bad Oregon State team Kadin Shedrick - Started 34 games for Virginia team that got two #4 seeds Julian Larry - All MVC on a team that won the NIT Jayson Kent - All MVC on a team that won the NIT Plus Chendal Weaver, Devon Pryor, Nic Codie, and Jamie Vinson - All of whom would be starting for at least half the D-1 teams in the country. Talent and construction of the team isn't the problem. This is one of the more talented teams top to bottom that we have had. Coaching has been horrendous. A better coach would have beaten Ohio State (lost by 8), Auburn (lost by 5), Ole Miss (lost by 3), at Arky (lost in OT), Tennessee (lost by 4). Maybe more than that.

Imagine trying to recruit high school recruits if you are on a year to year contract. Imagine trying to get decent assistant coaches. His contract was the minimum we could give him and still have any appearance of stability with the program. And in the end, the contract length won't matter at all when we decide to get rid of him.

The Arkansas game is going to be like a tourney game. Whoever loses very well may miss the tourney.

Next year our team currently looks like this: G - Jordan Pope, SR - 6'2, 165 G - Chendall Weaver, SR - 6'3, 164 F - Devon Pryor, JR - 6'7, 180 F - Nic Codie, SO - 6'8, 200 C - Jamie Vinson, SO - 6'11, 225 ------------------------------------ G - Malik Presley, RS-SO - 6'6, 210 F - John Clark, FR - 6'9, 238 - 4-star That looks a little rough, but we should get at least marginal improvement from everyone. A starting lineup of Pope + Weaver + Pryor could be pretty good. Codie and Vinson also both have potential. I think we could get a surprise great year out of Pope when he has to be the leader and main scoring option. Weaver and Pryor also bring a ton of athleticism. Pryor has been improving and could be great next year. We haven't seen Presley, and he could also be a contributor next year. But the bottom line is that the team will largely be built through the portal. For me, the top priority is to get an awesome lead guard with elite competitiveness and distribution skills. Second priority would be to get a couple of bigs who can dirty it up and bang. Honestly, next year will be an easier rebuild than this year where we only kept Weaver, an injured Shedrick, and Pryor (who hadn't played yet).

Simple answer: I'm a moron on multiple levels. I confused the dates. And then I somehow was looking at Games as wins, and wins as losses. Holy hell. I usually don't make mistakes like that.

Pat Knight was 91-29 in 3 seasons at Lamar including a Conference Title and an NCAA Tourney bid. That is a better resume than Terry had before we hired him. But mainly I meant that Tech was compelled to hire him because of Bobby Knight, regardless of whether he was qualified for the job. Maybe not the best comp though for how we were compelled to hire Terry. Tubby Smith was 46-50 at Tech. Yes, he finally made the tourney as an 8-seed in his final year at Tech (where he went 19-13). His tenure there was very disappointing considering he averaged 21 wins a year at Minnesota (not to mention his success at UK). He wasn't popular at Tech and both parties were happy to part ways. Mark Adams resigned under pressure because he was a weirdo who divorced his wife and married his dead brother's widow, which was a huge distraction to him and ultimately the team. His player discipline and quoting of master/slave bible verses was just the excuse they needed to get rid of him for cause. If Mike Krzyzewski had made those statements, it is barely a blip on the news radar.
-
That's fair, but I think Hunter also gets credit for improving his game every year. His 3P% has gone from 27.4% --> 33.7% --> 34.3% --> 41.9%. He is clearly putting in work.

Billy Gillispie is a really good coach. I mean he won Big 12 Coach of the Year twice, and was also SEC Coach of the Year. The dude took UTEP to the tourney in year 3 and took AGGY to the freaking Sweet 16 and a #7 final KenPom ranking. Now he is at Tarleton, one of the worst programs in D-1, and cranked out a 25-10 record last year. The dude has had three DUIs. If he got his alcohol issues under control, he could have been one of the great coaches in college basketball. He was a perfect fit for Texas Tech, where his hard nosed style could work with the caliber of players Tech is likely to get (but never could work somewhere like Kentucky). He reminds me of Chris Beard in many ways.
-
I look at a school like Texas Tech and have to respect the way they run their basketball program more than what we do at Texas. When they hire a lemon of a coach, they move on way quicker than us. And they aren't afraid to go get coaches with questionable pasts. If it doesn't work out, then they move on. Bob Knight - Great hire. Took them from average Kenpom of 127 to 56 with a S16 and national relevance Pat Knight - Bad hire, but fired after 3 years. This was kind of like our RT hire. Gillispie - Great hire who should have been like Beard. But fired after 1 year due to his demons. Chris Walker - Stepped in for a year. Then moved back to assistant Transition year. Tubby Smith - Good hire. Got a title & 3 E8 at UK. Solid at Minnesota. But bad at TT so they moved on in 3 yrs Chris Beard - Went out and got him despite him taking the UNLV job 2 weeks earlier. Tremendous hire. Mark Adams - Very good coach IMO. Took them to the S16. But is a weirdo and they moved on in 2 yrs. Grant McCasland - Another really good coach. Outperformed at UNT and has TT humming this year. Compared to Texas, they punch way above their weight on the coaching hires. And honestly their fan support dunks on ours as well.

I worry about this South Carolina game. They are absolutely desperate for a win and have played the #1 SoS so far in the SEC. And as Derka has pointed out, they have been very competitive in many of those games especially at home. That includes a 3 point loss to Auburn, 1 point loss to Florida, OT loss to Miss St, 4 pt loss to Aggy, 4 pt loss to Ole Miss. Holy fook. I think there is a chance that we get blown out in that game if we come in expecting an easy win. On the plus side, with a week to prepare I hope that Rodney has their attention. Souf Carolina plays LSU on Tuesday. I'm hoping that they blow out LSU to ensure they get our team's attention.

I suppose it is possible that if Tyrese Hunter and Dillon Mitchell stayed, then we get neither Jayson Kent or Julian Larry. The UT guys left and then the Indiana State guys signed just days later. If Hunter and Mitchell stayed, then maybe they look elsewhere in that case. And then we still have some slots open and still get Jordan Pope and Arthur Kaluma. That would be a best case scenario. That would give us: Starters: Hunter + Tre + Mark + Mitchell + Kaluma Bench: Pope + Weaver + Shedrick + Onyema That is a better team IMO. Not sure it is a ton better though.
-
Dillon Mitchell entered the transfer portal on April 15. Jayson Kent signed with Texas on April 17. Arthur Kaluma signed on June 28. My guess is that if we kept Mitchell, we would have signed Kent but then missed out on Kaluma. And I would rather have Kaluma than either of them. The big loss for me is Tyrese Hunter. People hated on him, but he is a much better player than either Pope or Larry. Hunter has been a starter on an E8, S16 and R32 team and his Memphis team would probably beat this Texas team. Here are all of their stats over the last 6 weeks: Tyrese Hunter (entered portal April 15) Jordan Pope (signed April 25) Julian Larry (signed April 14) Hunter is shooting the ball better than either of these guys. But more importantly, he actually impacts the game. He is a competitor and would match the fire coming from Tre Johnson. Pope and Larry are both role players and there is zero leadership from them. I can't stand having guards like that. When we get beat, it is usually by teams with guards who are actually leading their teams. The downside with Hunter is you get some turnovers. But I can live with that when he is being aggressive and trying to make an impact on the game. Oh well, that ship has sailed. I blame RT for letting him get away.
