Morris's defensive effort and efficacy have been a revelation.
Agreed. I really like his game and think he is going to be an awesome player as the game slows down for him. He is super athletic and continues to remind me of Avery Bradley with his movement, defense and shot form. I'm assuming he will stay around next year. If so, I can see him being an All-Conference type player with a year of maturation and a big bump in minutes.

Yup I’m sure you work so much harder than they do.
If I fuck around, I expect that at some point I will also find out.

Or some of us just like to see lazy entitled people fuck around and find out.

Meh. Poole is still young. I’m not willing to make any judgement just yet.

I expect we will have a little hangover in this game. If I ever bet against UT I might in this one. NAU isn’t terrible. Michigan State and Arizona State both beat them but not by 26+. And not coming off the biggest win in 15 years.
Nailed it!!!

When I’m wrong, I say I’m wrong. Lol.
Exhibit A on why my betting account is currently empty.

I don't think we are all that athletic last year.
Last year we were one of the least athletic teams I have ever seen at Texas. Some skilled players no doubt, but no real elite athletes in the whole crew.

To me, the biggest difference is that we are scoring EARLY in the shot clock. Even when we were up 20, the team was still trying to run in transition and score early. It is so refreshing to not just go into clock burning mode but keep the offensive pressure up. That attitude is out of the KU and UNC playbook. If they can score 100 on you, they are going to do it. How many leads have we lost in years past because we went conservative?

That is certainly a scorching hot take, considering UTEP tripled his salary IIRC.
ACU also could have also tripled his salary. They have plenty of money. But they probably were never going to do that.
Regardless, the guy is a solid coach. I would expect him to do very well at UTEP and move on within a few years. He needs to be at a bigger program.

Mouton was a badass ROLE player.
I'm going to have to go ahead and sort of... disagree with you on that.
Mouton was returning fresh off making an ALL-REGION team in the 2003 NCAA Tourney. Role players don't make all-region teams. Damn near every one of them ended up being high draft picks, many with big NBA Careers. If you get a player of this caliber coming back for another year, you already have a huge building block.
Out of the 25 All-Region Players that year you had:
- Carmelo Anthony - #3 Draft Pick
- Dwyane Wade - #5 Draft Pick
- Kirk Hinrich - #7 Draft Pick
- TJ Ford - #8 Draft Pick
- Nick Collison - #12 Draft Pick
- Emeka Okafor - #2 Draft Pick
- Luke Walton - #32 Draft Pick
- Hakim Warrick - #19 Draft Pick
- Steve Novak - #32 Draft Pick
- Paul Davis - #34 Draft Pick
- Keith Langford - 2x All Big 12
- Marquis Daniels - 2x All SEC, 10 Year NBA Vet
- Jason Gardner - 3x All- Pac 12
- Marquis Estill - All SEC
Quite a collection of role players at the college level.
Mouton was one of my favorite players ever at UT. He was the co-MVP in 2003 along with TJ Ford. F the haters. I'll ride or die with my guy all day every day. Dude could score the rock and he was a winner.
Now... back to talking about 2023

If you turn 2 McDonalds All Americans into role players does that make you a great coach?

Mouton was a bad-ass. The year before he was 2nd Team All-Big 12 and made the NCAA Tourney all-region team.
Ivey was the returning Big-12 Defensive PoY (by some publications)
James Thomas was a returning 2nd Team All Big12 / 1st Team All Defense player
Boddicker was a heavily contributing former McDonald’s All-American senior.
Buckman was another McDonald’s All-American coming off a 1st team Big12 Freshman season.
I don’t think making a Sweet 16 with a squad like that is overachieving. Any team that has two McDonalds All-Americans on it that returns 75% of their points and minutes should do pretty well.
Now Barnes should get credit for recruiting and retaining those players. And for their development. But not the “shocking” Sweet 16.

Actually make that three NBA players. Forgot James Thomas played a bit in the NBA as well.
-
I mean, that team had two NBA players on it in Ivey and PJ and a lot of other very highly rated players out of high school. I wouldn’t exactly say it was an unprecedented coaching job.
-
Arterio Morris reminds me a ton of Avery Bradley. Moves the same and has similar athleticism. Also fully committed on the defensive end.
-
(Hot Take Alert) I thought Golding screwed up leaving ACU for UTEP. Why not try to build your Alma mater into a central Texas Gonzaga and wait for a blue blood to come calling? ACU is a better school with like 3x the endowment of UTEP. Also closer proximity to recruits.

Is that Wacker injury the biggest what if in Texas basketball history? Wife (gf at the time) and I didn’t there until after the injury had happened. Gotta love the old HOT Coliseum with the tartan court on a rodeo floor.
I'm late to the party, but for me, the biggest what if is... What if PJ Tucker had returned for his senior year at Texas? He was only drafted in the middle of the 2nd round, so it isn't like he was a high draft pick.
If he returned, it would have made a huge difference since the 2006-2007 team was one of the youngest in NCAA history. He was a beast and previous Big-12 PoY. I would have loved seeing him play with Durant and Co. We could have moved Durant to the 3 and gone with:
- PG - Augustin
- SG - AJ Abrams
- SF - Kevin Durant
- PF - Damion James
- C - PJ Tucker
- Bench: Justin Mason, Connor Atchley, etc.
Then you could bring Mason off the bench and sub for any of Durant, James or Tucker. Man I would have enjoyed seeing that.

Bishop was my favorite player on the team last year. I expect that will continue this year.
