I'm planning on getting out of the country by eventually claiming asylum. Hope countries will let in American refugees

didn't you talk to a Canadian immigration attorney recently or was that someone else? i don't remember if there was any follow up...

you know, for decades one side or the other has always claimed 'im leaving!' when the other side won... this is the first time i've ever seen people actually do it/ seriously put plans in place. we personally know four families pulling the trigger. that's... really something 😳

ETA didn't realize which thread this was... but ^that's just leaving the country... the leaving/left Texas numbers are even higher, probably 75% of our social group (so far).

On a related note, this John Oliver segment on immigration court from 7 years ago is just rage-inducing. Elementary school aged kids appearing in court with no guardian and no attorney:

i joked a couple of weeks ago about John being deported if he's not careful. i no longer think it's a joke. he'll be okay bc he has fame and money, but it will still be fucked up.

I have felt alternating depression and rage for the last 3 months, although I think I've sort of blunted my emotional response to it, I guess due to the constant exposure. But one day every few weeks I just feel truly despondent.

this is me. although i've actually gotten pretty good at getting out in the sunshine and nature and appreciating the beauty around me here. literally touch grass i guess 😆

but yeah, i remain very plugged in, informed and aware (something about being a witness to it all??) and every couple of weeks i kind of have to just...eat cake for a day or two.

  5. yeah...i have found myself thinking a LOT about how the average German citizen went about their daily lives in 1938 and beyond. like...i've been seeing those folks through a really different lens in recent weeks.

i see how it happened. i really do. and my privileged, retired, blue-state self has developed some sincere empathy for those citizens. because, like...wtf, what do i do? there is no answer right now, none at all.

Apparently it is in Florida.  Insurance rates are skyrocketing and the flood plains are being expanded because of the continued effects of global warming.  Older houses are uninsurable and whole neighborhoods are in new floodplain zones.  If you pull a permit or rebuild you have to raise the foundation several feet to get insurance and even then it's through the roof.

90% of insurance lawsuits are filed in Florida and insurance companies are going bankrupt.  Add on top of that people not making premium payments.

Combine that with rising property taxes and people are literally and figuratively underwater in their homes.

Look at this cunt that is the general counsel of DHS. https://www.dhs.gov/person/joseph-n-mazzara

Joseph N. Mazzara is a married father of six, a Marine combat veteran, and an experienced litigator. He graduated from Christendom College and Scalia Law, and clerked for Judges Edith Jones, Brantley Starr, and Stephen Vaden. Most recently he was Special Counsel to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Oh, and he seems to be an 8th year lawyer.
