  1. Because he is. And again I wonder how a man so rich and interesting can me so miserable. He has the means to hang out with the literally cooled people on the planet. Hike mountains. Bang Surly 10’s. And all he does is yearn for the admiration of assholes. I sincerely feel bad for him.
  2. Sub-60 HR for a (sorry for this) old man is phenomenal. You gotta be top 5% there. Healthy living and moving around keeps your brain young too. Was in Puerto Rico last month and we hiked 45 min to a waterfall. Mid-40’s sister (no pics) said half her coworkers are not in good enough shape to do it. They’d literally hafta stay back at the pool. All while we all hiked and then rode a rope swing out over the water. First time in my life I did that. Anyone mid-40’s who can’t make it up that hill woulda stayed back at the hotel, slopped in a chair and drank. Stay on that viscous cycle. Getting healthy is hard, very hard for some people. But it really is simple. And you aren’t competing against other people. Your competition is the person you were yesterday. Strive every day to be a little better than yesterday. All you gotta do.
  3. Potato is the new currency. Tell me I’m wrong.
  4. I don’t wanna white knight for that lady. But… Lotsa people in the rural north keep that much cash on hand. You’re driving down the road and see a fish house, 4 wheeler, etc. along the road for sale. It’s a smoking deal and they won’t take a check. So you go to the hiding spot in your pickup and grab a stack of cash. Not saying she was at the restaurant to buy a boat, but carrying lotsa cash is kinda cultural for some folks. To be clear, I dislike her as a person. But there may be nothing nefarious here.
  5. Fit to Fat to Fit, on A&E I think but lotsa eps are on YT. It’s great reality TV but a terrible model. Trainer packs in a buncha weight by eating terrible and quitting exercise then goes back to the healthy ways. Heathy eating on top of the fact they’re burning gobs of calories doing their job. News flash, they lose the weight very quickly. The other party has been seriously overweight for years and has no healthy eating habits. They get some coaching there but mostly just a trainer yelling at them to “RUN FASTER!” A 300# man jumping straight in to high impact cardio is a terrible thing to do. That plus marginal efforts to permanently improve diet and the fail is real. But yeah the PT’s really struggled with fat life. Fitness is their identity and brand. Take that away and it’s an existential crisis.
  6. Iron-on knee patches and not just work jeans. We wore those things to school. Mom made a lot of our shirts, even sweatshirts. She was a craftsman and ngl, my friends were jealous.
  7. “Fat is a choice,” is ostensibly correct but leaves out a lot and is terribly oversimplified. Work 9-5, gym membership, Whole Foods delivery makes living lean a bit easier of a choice than someone who works irregularly and hasta drive across town to buy vegetables. Yes, certainly that person and “choose to not be fat,” but it comes significantly harder. Not gonna Stan for the fats, but the complexity of the issue is far beyond the mental capabilities of most Surly posters. Now I gotta hang up. Personal chef gonna be here shortly.
  8. Those fake ears make a good disguise.
  9. Before the next holiday speak to them 1:1. “My views on healthy living include portion control. That is very hard because of how tasty your meals are. And it is nothing personal when I decline seconds. I know there is always more available to me and I know how much I want. Please don’t pester me about it. I do not appreciate it.” If they persist, you persist to. Raise the sharpness until they stop.
  10. Article goes on to discuss the fixes, but still. Biological humans are holding our own. We can kill more effectively than any robot. https://euromaidanpress.com/2025/04/18/forbes-ukraines-robot-dogs-failed-the-war-test-they-couldnt-hide-from-russians-humanoid-robots-are-up-next/
  11. It's a spoof account; a very good one. I was 4 Tweets in before I figured it out.
  12. The thing that set up that scene was never outdone on the show.
  13. He doesn’t eat until he kneels 30 min. If that kneeling happens only after he passes out for starvation, so be it. Prison rules.
  14. And if you already have FT job, I'm sure they'll hire you for evenings and weekends. Get you some walk around money.
  15. That's gotta be on purpose.
  16. I live in Sioux Falls, a city that has had strong growth for like 30 years. (We are the Austin of the nothern plains.) City government gets most of its revenue from sales tax. 2025 budget was for 6% YoY growth. I presume that growth assumption was a rather pragmatic, as I see our government as pragmatic in general. So we say January sales tax numbers this week. 6% growth budgeted. 0.1% actual. Just January. Folks just tightening up in anticipation of tariff inflation. Woof.
  17. How is it in the summer?
  18. I have friends, college-educated professionals, who have gone all in on this. Historically we have kindly discussed/debated our views on politics and economy. This time we are not. Seems to me the results will be obvious by Labor Day and the best thing is to be quiet and let them witness in person. If the bad things we think will happen...happen, any rational man will recognize it. And any person who does NOT recognize it never will. No point in engaging in conversation then either.
  19. Does the market trade today? Gotta know if I need to preheat my crack pipe.
  20. So TSLA's BoD is gonna ride him all the way down to zero?
  21. I really wanna believe that but I dunno. I read it as the US throwing up their hands saying, "Goodluck, bye."
