  1. Kofman with a short thread on the recent movements:
  2. Standing on the side of the road with lady friends trying to figure out a plan while active traffic zooms by is a great look.
  3. From that thread. Looks like the conscripted defense forces aren’t in agreement on standing and fighting the UA:
  4. The quote says these are opposition politicians, will be interesting if they get the Navalny treatment or not. I mean Putin made it public several times that he was personally running this operation right? Somebody is going to take the fall for 50k+ dead and a complete gutting of Russian military material stores/vehicles that took 50 years to amass. Especially if nothing or very little ends up being gained.
  5. The thread on the Duma motion to remove Putin from office says it obviously won’t go anywhere, but may be a sign of louder dissent to come.
  6. Since the spring when people thought Russia would roll right through Ukraine, Ukraine has stopped and reversed much of the Russian advance, attrited the Russians to the tune of 49,000(!!!) Russian KIA, over 5,000 vehicles/heavy equipment lost, and has now coordinated what as of today looks like the start of a successful counteroffensive to take back Russian occupied territory. All of the US/NATO systems we have sent the Ukrainians have been very successful. The last two days have looked to perhaps be the turning of the tide and people are feeling like maybe The Ukrainians can actually win this against what started as a massive disadvantage. So your question came off like the contrarian / rhetorical / shit posting that Russian bots like to spew on the internet.
  7. Yes, I’ve been trying to remember who said it a week or so ago on twitter that the US isn’t willing to commit genocide anymore, even if it means “losing” a war, which is a differentiator between us and Russia, China, etc. I think that’s a huge reason we’ve pushed our military sophistication so far, not only do we want our guys to come home safe, we want to be able to overwhelm adversaries quickly and avoid the protracted meatgrinders that reflect negatively on us globally and lose political support at home. Powell Doctrine vs. Westmoreland’s attrition warfare. Sun Tzu knew it a long time ago: “in warfare, keeping a nation intact is best, destroying a nation second best…Therefore, to achieve a hundred victories in a hundred battles is not the highest excellence; to subjugate the enemy's army without doing battle is the highest of excellence.”
  8. Back when we were out of patience in asymmetric wars with Stone Age nations we did. We’re still reconciling it. We at least as a nation have regrets and can own the fact that mistakes were made and we can learn from them and try not to repeat and advise others not to go down that road. Russia doesn’t give a shit and has no moral barometer or ethical floor.
  9. Yes they are very good on their turf, and when they want to kill each other, it’s really damn hard to stop it. We used to get some grief because we didn’t go into Rwanda when they were doing their ethnic cleansing, but to paraphrase one of our officials at the time “our military isn’t designed to stop one guy with a machete from killing another guy”. I.e the extreme asymmetry eliminates our advantages, we literally have to have guys standing guard everywhere with rifles to stop that, which isn’t what we’re setup to do.
  10. SIAP. We trained the UA guys that Harpooned the Moscow. I mean we are just pantsing Putin. Our military has an incredible capability when we’re going up against a 20th century opponent and not trying to stop goat herders from stoning each other.
  11. Can you imagine what the tone of that meeting/afterparty is going to be like? Talk about high morale. Ukrainian Def Min should come in like this, get it started right.
  12. I would bet Erdogan brokered the deal, he maybe even loaded the ordinance on grain freighters headed back to Odessa after they unloaded in a Turkish port. To state the obvious, I think Putin read Erdogan (and separately the entire west) completely wrong on this deal. It seems like Putin thought Erdogan was going to look the other way and it has been the opposite, which is great.
  13. This is weird political theatre. Seems like Putin thinks it’s a flex to have these exercises to keep up the “everything is fine” in Ukraine charade. The dude has such cognitive dissonance and is so used to zero accountability that at this point I wonder if he’s already mentally making the adjustments to the “whatever happens in Ukraine, happens; and that will have been my plan all along” spin. I mean if you were really all-in to win in Ukraine, you wouldn’t be fucking around with exercises.
  14. At a glance on my phone I immediately assumed it was a photoshop of The Usual Suspects, but maybe just life imitating art.
  15. I’ve had a .54 Hawken for about 15 yrs. I gave myself a flinch shooting 400gr Minnie balls over ~100 grains of Goex. That stock design catches the underside of my cheekbone, literally felt like I’d been punched in the face after a shooting session with heavier loads. I don’t trust my eyes to shoot open sights beyond about 50 yards anymore, but it would be fun to shoot a doe with it from my archery setup sometime.
  16. I am currently oscillating between thoughts of going all carbon fiber and suppressed/precision with my hunting rifles and then I go back to old school elegant blued and walnut guns. I like carbon fiber and stainless steel/titanium, but: A) it just doesn’t have the soul of classic rifles and B) I’m worried that I’ll overheat magnum chambered carbon barrels. I’m not very disciplined with time between shots at the range.
  17. @fattyflattie and I have an appreciation for Flaig’s rifles. Dury’s in San Antonio has a nice one listed on gunbroker I’m posting as a PSA if anyone is interested. 338 Win Mag. FN controlled feed action. The FN triggers are nice as well in my experience, mine is tuned to ~1.5ish lb, really light and crisp. These guns were a neat intersection of top end European manufactured actions, beautiful American Douglas barrels, beautiful hand worked stocks and old fashioned hand built attention to detail from master smiths. I am tempted to buy it myself, as it would almost match my Flaig’s 300 Wby perfectly, but I have 4 other magnum rifles already, need to focus on other priorities in my gun battery, and have bought a Beretta A400 and Christensen Ranger in the last 6 months. Between those and the price of ammo, I’m getting some “tone” from the wife. The listing: https://www.gunbroker.com/item/942993035
  18. I’ve been out of the loop lately but I kinda feel like Erdogan told Putin “no sinking grain ships in the Black Sea.”
  19. 77 days till elk season for me. I picked up a Christensen Ranger 22 for grouse hunting and for some inexpensive range/trigger time, it shoots well. My first carbon barrel rifle. I’ve been rucking 1-2.5 miles a few days a week with my pack in cargo arrangement and a 50# “imitation elk quarter”. Tried another handload recipe for my 300WBY and still no luck. Factory ammo is still grouping so at least I know I can fall back on that. Last years elk hide got back from the tannery this week.
  20. It was easy on the palate as well. I did some long range shooting at the ranch today with some new handloads for my elk rifle and the results weren’t great. I had a little panic attack after that at the thought of not getting an elk this year. Need to change it up, figure it out and get dialed in soon.
  21. Where has this great thread been my whole life? I need to explore the site more. Elk burgers tonight, not nearly as gourmet as you guys.
