  1. If I’m being honest, probably no more than 500 yards. Have no real issue in manually turning turrets. Lightweight would be great

I’m a Sig fanboy so here’s a few options from them:

Both in the 25oz weight range
  2. Picked up a “The Fix” by Q yesterday. Wanted a bolt action 6.5 CM that was lightweight. After lugging around my HK 556 I’ve been leaning more and more towards lightweight rifles/SBR’s. Still haven’t pulled the trigger on a scope yet. Have a Vortex Viper PST Gen II that’s 1-6 but looking for something in the 4-16X range.

What do y’all recommend? Not averse to dropping nearly 2k on a Razor but if anyone has any good recs, I’d appreciate it. And, my LPVO I referenced above is SFP. Would it be better to get a FFP for the 6.5 CM scope?

How long range do you want to go with it and do you want to manually turn turrets or use holdover/electronics? And stay lightweight I’m assuming?
  3. My 8yr old daughter has been in my ear about getting her a bow. She’s seen me shoot mine some, and I think has seen some female comic book characters with them or something. Anyway, I took her to an indoor range this weekend where they had some toy bows, and she had a good time, wants to do it more. I’m looking at getting her a quality bow that they use in the National Archery in Schools Program; maybe she’ll compete one day. More importantly, maybe I’ll have a bowhunting buddy one day:

  4. I know in NM you have to draw a tag for most game on public land (WT, mulies, elk), but what is the protocol if you see an Ibex (for example).  My guess is they escaped from a private ranch, and have no seasonal hunting restrictions?

The state stocked the Oryx and ibex on two separate ranges (white sands and the Florida mountains).

On range/reserve there is a very in-demand draw system for the Oryx/Ibex.
There are off-range draw tags available and I also believe they sell some off range/reserve oryx tags year round that are good for ~30 days or so; so theoretically if you see one off the designated area, you can run over to the fish and game office and buy a tag and come back and try and get it.

This isn’t first person knowledge; I’ve only talked to folks that have done the Oryx hunt and Rinella had a good podcast where he did an Oryx and I think an Ibex hunt (or had a guest on that had). The ibex archery hunt is super low success rate (~7%).

  5. As I’ve mentioned in the past, I don’t hunt. But I’ve been thinking about taking up hunting invasives. In Texas that would be pigs. What are some higher altitude  invasives I could hunt on foot in places like Colorado, NM, and Wyoming ?

There’s a few free-ranging higher altitude animals that are hunted as regulated “non-natives” in certain areas and as invasives/exotics in others. Some I can think of:

    Auodad in west Texas/ NM
    Oryx in NM
    Ibex in NM
Elk, Axis, other exotics in West Texas

These animals don’t get the negative reputation that pigs do, but the state game agencies want hunting to keep the numbers in check and/or keep the animals within a certain range.

Pheasant is also a non-native/“invasive” that’s managed like a native game animal, FYI. The original pheasants from China all got loose from a barn in Oregon during a storm if I recall, now we have them over maybe 30% of the lower 48.

  6.
Are you John Cena? Jeez, same some ladies for the rest of us.

Just camera perspective, but I wish I could snap my fingers and drop 30lbs of fat and add some muscle, conditioning, and flexibility before this elk hunt. Hunting between 7-9000ft. I’m feeling like I have an ass whip coming. Now that I have my gear mostly sorted out, I need to really work on getting my self in better shape.
  7. So we went out Saturday to get some stuff ready for the season and shot my Norinco made 1873 Winchester a bit afterwards. I took it out yesterday morning and the side plates had a fine layer of rust on the color case hardening. CLP or Rem Oil and paper towels (all I had on hand) didn't remove it. It's like a layer of rust browning, except fingerprints are clearly visible and it ruins the beauty of the color case hardening. Any recs on a product to restore the original finish?

Reagan beat met to it; I’ve had success with steel wool, but bronze wool sounds like a better idea.
Really fine steel wool (I think 0000) and Corrosion X has worked for me on blued guns with some light rust. Go very slow and very light pressure. Might soak it in Corrosion C for a day or two prior to hitting it with the steel wool.

Also as a PSA: Corrosion X For Guns is a great product that I think is better than Rem Oil as a lubricant and has some of the rust protection of Corrosion X.

  8. No birds were flying today so we did some work around the ranch and then I took some time to finish sighting in my new Weatherby and then swung over to the longer range targets for a few shots. the Sig BDX setup worked great, just range the target and the scope gives you a holdover and wind age call. The wind was gusty, so I’ll need some time to practice more wind estimation, etc, but looking lethal for elk next month.

iPhone slow mo video is a handy tool to run while you’re taking a shot or two to check your form, etc pre-shot. E.g. my right thumb is more comfortable on the side of the tang rather than crossed over the top and my accuracy was better. I hadn’t noticed until I reviewed a few shots. Good time at the range.

  9. Also, a cultipacker will get you better results than a drag for packing the seed in after broadcasting, you might take a look at some point, they can be built/bought used for not too much. Dr. Deer says plots will outperform dry protein 10-1 in a cost per lb protein forage production. I plot about 5-8 acres on our ~184ac place. I drag a packer behind our disk

  10. Plot question.

Kinda new in the deer hunting. I’ve been duck hunting since the mid 90s. But I have a 12 year old that wants a deer so I’m a deer hunter now.

So I took my 25 gallon 12v sprayer and crushed the grass/weeds in front of my feeder full of protein 3 weeks ago. I went out last week and it worked.

So my plan is, In two weeks go out there with the disc and turn it over and add some seed and drag it.

I’m north Texas, less than a mile from the red, do tell what to plant. I have a disc and drag and that’s it.

Also, my feeder is inside of panels because fuck pigs eating my expensive protein.

How far west are you? Turner Seed fall deer mix is out of Breckenridge TX and makes the best blend for west of I35 from my 15 years of trying dry land plots. East of I-35 things get easier with some of the Alabama and other eastern company blends (Pennington, tecomate, buck forage oats(whitetail institute), etc.)

Test soils, fertilize, and don’t plant too early, also you need to plant about 2.5-5% of your habitat area if I recall (if possible).

  11. I like the DdlM aesthetic.

If fact now that I think about it, I have four skulls in my office at work (which one of my young folks describes as “very intimidating”); but only one of them is human ; )

  12. I’m not a big gun guy.  See upthread about me seeking advice about a handgun.  I’m not anti-gun either, it’s just not a huge hobby for me.  I just thought the pink gun merited a comment.

I get it completely. A few years ago I was just as surprised seeing a pink gun as you. If we as a society had made firearms/marksmanship/hunting more approachable/normal to girls/women decades ago, how different things might be. We need women engaged to help “normalize” these rights/activities if we are going to maintain any semblance of the country we grew up in over the next several decades.

  13. Do they make pink ammo to go with the pink gun?  J/K, glad your daughters had a good experience.

On a serious note: anything that makes shooting more approachable to them and lowers the barrier to entry is a good idea. I tried getting them to shoot my grandad’s old Winchester 22 last year, but it’s too big and they couldn’t get setup on it right and they lost interest pretty quick. They don’t even want to touch my big rifles; but they instantly knew this thing was designed for them and looked fun, wanted to do a pretty long dry firing session at the house when I got it out and showed them.

  14. Buying a light commercial grade (500 lbs.) ice maker to set up at deer camp.  Water supplied by our well.  Need to set up a filtration system to take out iron and calcium.
Do any of you Appalachian-Americans have any practical experience with this?   Was thinking of 3 in-line filters with the first being the biggest micron filters graduating to two smaller micron filters.   Mount them on a board for easy access to change out.
The actual plumbing should be simple enough
Thoughts?  Experience?  Doesn’t seem to be a difficult proposition.

What aquifer/formation is the well pulling from?
  15. Dayuuum!  Those are nice,  but wow…

The craziest part is that half of the stuff I was interested in is sold out. Kenetrek is sold out of both of the models I was interested in; next shipment due mid-august; Schnee’s is sold out of my 1st choice, next shipment also due in August. I was not anticipating having a hard time finding availability of $400 boots, but this is the world we live in now. I don’t want to wait until August as I need to break them in.
  16. Buying new hunting boots for my elk hunt, etc. Shopped Kenetrek, Zamberlan, Meindl, and Schnee’s. Thinking I’m going with the Schnee’s Timberline. Boots are pricey these days.
