  1. Why do you think he never intended to return? He seems to have ride-or-die type friends on the team - Machete, Altuve, LMJ among them. I never detected any friction with Dusty or the front office.
  2. Curious, why? Never met him, but know his family a little bit.
  3. Dude. Bad idea jeans. I can't think of a worse combination of new home build/living with in-laws for a marriage. If you stay together I will be impressed. Also, I learned the words "mogambo" and "scrunge" on this thread today.
  4. Bravo.
  5. It's about what you prioritize. For you, the chance to win one more is worth the risk of two bad years following. That's basically playing for one year of big success. The Astros mindset is to play for longer term sustained success. No right or wrong, just different priorities. They are also trying to make money, not necessarily win championships.
  6. Do you think it was the injury history that prevented Correa from getting the deal he wanted? Is playing another year or two or three for Minnesota going to change the view of his injury history? What do they do with that $30M? Use it now (and on what)? Save it for the trade deadline to stack a contending team? Don't spend it, period? Hookers and blow?
  7. This hurts, no doubt. I loved CC. Thought he was really tough and a good leader. He stuck up for the team during the sign stealing scandal and I'll always respect him for that. I'll also always love him for the homer against the bitch Joe Kelly. My takeaway is this: Carlos did what he wanted under the circumstances. Obviously no team offered him the 10/350 deal he wanted. My theory on why that offer never came is the risk due to injury history. So he kept his powder dry and his options open. He's betting on himself. Can't fault the guy for that. The numbers should have been very doable for the Astros, but the opt outs were a bridge too far, I'm guessing. I honestly don't blame the team. I wouldn't want to be playing that guessing game every year. How can you possibly plan for the future that way?
  8. I think he meant he hasn't had turf toe during his entire period playing for Texas, not that he's never had turf toe while at Texas. In other words, there were times he was playing without turf toe, so why didn't they do it during those times.
  9. I guess I've been fishing for a good, facts-based response. I was hoping someone knew something about government benefits and what was available then versus what is available today. I know the basics; that's all. The "stimi" and the federal addition to state unemployment benefits ended a long time ago, as far as I know. It may have been true that some people could live off of those government benefits for a month or two back in 2020. I don't think that could be the case today, but again, I don't know for certain and was hoping someone could fill me in.
  10. So then it may be partially true that some people are relying on government assistance rather than going to get a low-paying job that doesn't make much financial sense? I haven't seen any numbers or reporting on the number of new assistance claims. I was tracking new unemployment claims for a while. Even if this is the case - more people living on government assistance due directly to the condition of low wage jobs and cost of living - conservatives still have an ignorant and angry approach. They don't understand, or care to even consider, the reasons why the situation exists. Or, they do kind of know the answer but they can't bear to admit it or they bury their heads in the sand and pretend it's not true. To most of the conservatives I know personally, entitlements/govt. assistance/welfare is their #1 gripe. They just hate the idea of undeserving people getting their money. Even though "undeserving people getting their money" is an incorrect and overly simplistic explanation of what is happening.
  11. Understood and agreed. So what are they doing for money? How are they feeding and housing themselves?
  12. Okay, so what are these people who choose not to work shitty, low-paying jobs doing for money? This seems like a Peter Gibbons-type of move: "I don't like work, so I'm just not going to go anymore. I'm not going to pay bills either." That makes for a funny line in a movie, but reality is a little different. If you don't pay any bills you end up homeless. If they aren't sucking on the govt. teat and they aren't working, what are they doing for money? Something just doesn't add up here.
  13. I have a question. I keep hearing conservatives saying that the reason for the labor shortage (and thus price increases and inflation) is because the government is paying people to stay home. The government did just straight give people money in the early days of the pandemic in 2020 and they added on an amount to unemployment benefits for a while, but my understanding is that program ended a while back. So what are these people talking about? Is the government still paying people stimulus payments that I just don't know about?
  14. I knew a dumbfuck from the gym where I used to work out years ago who did something similar. Had a HUGE fucking bruise on the inside of his arm where he had to roll the bar off his chest to get out from under it. Attempting a max alone is not smart.
  15. I'll have what he's having.
  16. Cool, cool.
  17. I don't think it's as easy and just shipping jets and shit to them. They would need to train pilots and maintenance crews. Not something that could happen overnight. This is going to be over within the next 10 days. I considered that, but this is not WWIII, yet, and whether Ukraine falls or not does not have to precipitate it. I'm not opposed to intervention. Hell, we got this badass military that we paid for, might as well use it to effect as long as it's wise. Prior to the invasion of Ukraine, I didn't think it was wise for any NATO country, or anyone, to get involved militarily. Having watched it unfold I have a much lower opinion of Putin, Russian and the Russian military's abilities. So maybe Putin overplayed his hand and we could have deployed without consequence. But then, nukes. Best case, Ukraine wins, Putin completely loses favor and is put out and the world is a better place for it. Medium case, there are talks, Ukraine agrees to never enter NATO and maybe cedes the Donbas region to Russia and it's over. Worst case is Russia takes over the country and we're left wondering where the next domino is to fall Obviously the world can't stand by and watch Russia take over the world. We're a long way from that point and not in a frog in a boiling pot of water sort of way.
  18. I'm not sure I agree with Kasparov's premise, which is that the West should be acting militarily. We want to avoid WWIII and if the sovereignty of Ukraine is the price for that I think the calculation has been that is the price we must pay.
  19. This. There is literally nothing he could do to turn away his voting base. Video of him doing unspeakable acts would be brushed off as "fabricated by the deep state." Actually, I take that back, the one thing, the ONE THING, he could do that would probably turn his people against him would be to say something nice about Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, George Soros or Hilary Clinton.
  20. Or accept negotiated terms to save face. Something like Ukraine won't enter NATO for ten years or somesuch. Throw in a gas pipeline to Germany or two.
  21. Someone doesn't like Aaron Rodgers. Others don't either. They post all the reasons why and discuss. One of those reasons is that he was less than truthful when answering a question about his vaccination status. Some people think that COVID and vaccines are a political topic and that the government and big pharma want to kill them. Other people tell them all the reasons they are wrong and stupid. The end.

    Getting old sucks

I've had pulled muscles in my lower back that acted like this. Just bent down like I do all the time and for whatever reason, BAM. Can't hardly move or walk. I've probably had it once or twice a year for the past 5 years or so (I turn 48 in a month). There is a miracle drug for it - prednisolone.

    Getting old sucks

Hernia surgery scheduled for 2/24. No big deal, but still sucks. 47 y.o., about to be 48. In other cool news, a colleague of mine who is my age went to the hospital in mid-December with severe abdominal pain. Cancer. Died Friday. 3 kids under age 6. The older I get the more people I know who are my age who become disabled or dead. Feels like being in an electrical storm and you can see the lightning getting closer and closer but you don't know if or when it's going to strike you.
  24. I assume it was over a period of years, not all at the same time.
  25. I watched part of a video of the incident. Patrick and Hidalgo were standing next to one another at a corner of the tent. One of the officers came over and asked her to take a seat. She refused. Patrick told her to sit down and shut up, apparently. You can't hear that in the video. Conservative talk radio picked it up and turned it into "Hidalgo was grandstanding and our hero Dan Patrick put her in her place." I'd like to know what the protocol is for something like this. If a constable is killed in the line of duty where does the county judge normally stand at the funeral? Does the Lt. Gov. normally come to the funeral? I'd like to know the political persuasion of the officer who asked her to take a seat. I find using a funeral of a fallen officer for political gain despicable for either party. Maybe it's always been that way and I'm just a naive idealist. How about go to the funeral for the right reasons - to show support for law enforcement and to maybe say a word of gratitude and comfort to the grieving family. Forget the fucking photo op.
