As a Duke guy, we really liked Elko, but knew he would take this job if offered, if only for the guarantee if it doesn't work out. Worst case, he's on the Tom Herman/Kevin Sumlin track and gets another job after A&M.
I just don't see him as an A&M guy. Look, what he did at Duke was awesome. He took pretty much the same roster on defense from the previous year and made it salty. He was gifted a really, really, good QB in Riley Leonard, and some mid to late round NFL talent at RB to have a pretty good offense to go along with the culture shift he created on defense. He hit the portal and made the defense even better this year. But when Leonard went down, the season went off a cliff (and it was also a crazy tough schedule). But he is a northeast/Big 10 personality that will have to deal with the West Texas/East Texas oil money rednecks. The culture fit just doesn't seem great as a HC, where as a DC, it mattered less, if at all.
All that said, if the NIL train over there keeps chugging along, and he gets a really strong OC, if they take all of the that off of his plate and let him be a coach, who knows what will happen? I just don't see this as anything but a bandaid.
It sucks that I can't really hate the Aggie coach, though. Elko is a good dude. He just needs to be careful because he is very much on the Mangino/Friedgen trajectory.
